GTD application like Things ?

Hi,

I really love the system about GTD. There is a popular app on iPhone which is able to do this in a simple way. Some of yours probably know this:

http://culturedcode.com/things/iphon...eenshot-01.jpg

http://culturedcode.com/things/iphone/

I just want to ask, is there is any similiar applications for Maemo 5 ? I'm planning to buy a N900 and this app is really a must-one.

Thanks in advance

Re: GTD application like Things ?

I was looking for one myself, and found this:

http://www.ohloh.net/p/notyet

Looks like it might have been abandoned at alpha stage.

I would be very happy with colour categories on email for GTD.

This is one of the main things I need and thus want to start making for the N900. Currently I use Palm OS/Datebk6/Progect and something that works as well or better is my aim.

Hello to Everybody.

I ordered the N900 on the Nokia online shop.

I hope also that someone will develop a GTD application because I badly need it.
It would be nice also that the PIM client of N900 support the tags, colors and could be integrated for use of Action, Delegate, etc....

I hope that the Mail for Exchange problems with Exchange 2003 will be solved and that the entire protocol will be soon implemented.

I hope that the new Qt framework will give an impulse of developing business apps for this beautiful "smartphone".

A loto of "hope"...we'll see...

Re: GTD application like Things ?

As there are so many GTD apps on other platforms, I'm sure there will be a few to choose from for Maemo, eventually. But what I most want to colour categories on email, and that looks unlikely ever to happen, unless Microsoft make Outlook for Maemo (I heard that they are making Mobile Office for Symbian).

While yes it doesn't look like any work has been done on it for a long time, there is source code: https://garage.maemo.org/plugins/scm...p/?root=notyet

Has anyone tried it yet? Might be a decent starting point for an app.

Re: GTD application like Things ?

I use(d) a hacked version of GPE tod. GPE todo allows you to make multiple categories and assign a todo to any number of categories. todo's also can have an associated due date. However a) the default gui is not sufficiently friendly and b) I really wish there was a way to have todo recurrences. There is not a concept of scheduled things showing up in a "today" category but gpe todo will automatically sort by date in ascending order.

Re: GTD application like Things ?

I can't speak for any new N900 development but, as much as I've looked, there are no real GTD apps available for the N810 so I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for them to appear on the N900. All I've found are what I would term simple to do lists. Like sarahn, I've settled on GPE todo as the best of what's out there.

What's missing from GPE todo?

All I know about GPE todo is what I've seen here:

http://www.kernelconcepts.de/~fuchs/...ndex.html#AEN7

It seems to do most of what's really needed to be able to run GTD. However, I wonder if there is a way to run back up? Can I attach any type of notes or comments to the tasks? Can I sort them by date of entry? Any knowledge from GPE todo users welcomed!

I also need a desktop interface which would preferably be Outlook via the Tasks and Calendar items that are already being synced to the N900. I used to use a product called Life Balance from Llamagraphics that did this. Alas, it is not available for N900 yet, but I have sent them a request.

Re: GTD application like Things ?

I was after a hierarchical todo list mainly (i.e. tasks can depend on other tasks, all of which can have due dates, priorities, flags, etc.), I actually couldn't find anything that looked portable from desktop Linux either.

You can assign a due date; you could use the due date to instead indicate the date you wrote it down instead. I don't recall how the built in n900 backup works but if it does the home directory then it should probably work. There are also ways to sync gpe-todo which I haven't tried yet. There is no field for notes.

You may be able to run the palm version of life balance using garnet vm.

I thought of that and I have been playing around with the Garnet VM, but my experience so far isn't so positive. It has quite a few issues under Maemo 5. Sometimes having no solution is better than having a solution that gives constant frustration. :)

Any news about GTD application or calendar/email better programs ?

I'm trying toodledo.com in a browser window, which is nice but I need an active internet connection, which is a little heavy on the battery. I'd love to have a better todo application!

Re: GTD application like Things ?

Toodledo isn't a little to mobile unfriendly?
Anyway, it would be really better if there was a way to sync the toodledo data in order to use/edit it offline.

Re: GTD application like Things ?

UI for something like this is a piece of cake with Qt (esp. upcoming Qt 4.6). Who won't somebody do it as a finger excercise?

The program would be worth more if it synced with something like rememberthemilk; you could probably steal the protocol code from "remember the milk plasmoid".

If you forget online sync, a simple app like this would be around one day of work without esoteric topics to tackle - just use QListWidget and stacked windows.

Re: GTD application like Things ?

Well then Shoul I hope any of you code-masters could deliver a offline GTD tool any time soon? :)

If someone ports (and hildonizes) pywxwidgets for Maemo5 then TaskCoach would be yours.

I also had a look at Basket which is a Qt based GTD application and wondered whether it would work without the KDE base libs. In that case that would also be an option. A rather good one, btw.

I have now written a straightforward gtd app based with Qt (that I chose to call 'qtdone'); I haven't pushed it yet to extras, but I'll do that when pr1.2 w/ "official" Qt 4.6 comes out.

Fab!

Could you post some UI images?

Thanks!

Re: GTD application like Things ?

An application that you should consider runs wonderfully on our device, Emacs org-mode

http://orgmode.org

There is a big learning curve for new comers, but the rewards are very high and it's designed to work simply out of the box.

Here is an introductory talk

http://orgmode.org/talks/index.html#sec-1

Some gtd specific ideas

http://members.optusnet.com.au/~char..._workflow.html
http://orgmode.org/worg/org-tutorials/index.php

To get setup
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...ighlight=emacs
http://sumoudou.org/%E7%9B%B8%E6%92%...ia%20N900.html

And since orgmode is basically text files, for the first time in my computing life, a two way sync actually works. Any file comparison program can compare the text files, so modifications on a pc and the handheld can be easily compared (I use kompare)

I've tried lots of "gtd" apps - life balance, bonsai, shadow, datebk6, outlook, eccopro (best ever, not great with linux), the tiddlys, the batf, etc. Orgmode on the n900 is the real deal.

For contact management, bbdb works well with emacs & org; now you can text & call directly from emacs!

Hello vivainio,

Thanks for posting the UI.

I've got three questions:

How do you create @contexts?
Any limitation in number of contexts?
Will it be able to sort by date of entry?

Thank you!

vivainio 2010-03-21 10:08

Re: GTD application like Things ?

No context support yet. I'll add context filter selector to app menu at some point (soon?), with the obvious possibility to add contexts.

Thanks for the reply!

I just realized, could I run a copy of the file on a Linux desktop/laptop?

Great initiative!!

Basket is a problem, as I remember the development on it stopped and it was never ported to kde4 libraries.
An app that should be easy to port is Getting Things Gnome as its written in python with (obviously) GTK+. I use it on my desktop and it works pretty well.

Not out of the box as it's using the (excellent) Maemo5 extensions to Qt. At some point I'll also ensure that it compiles with vanilla Qt, since I want to deploy it for Symbian as well.

I never thought I'd deploy something on Symbian without being paid for it, but Qt makes it a reasonable goal ;-).

Ah well, a pity. I recognised most Qt apps are still relying on the Qt3 compatibility libs and pure Qt4 apps are rather rare.
Basket would have filled the needs for a decent GTD app.

Organising my life, projects and architectures with text files strikes me so org-mode is not for me as well as taskjuggler is not (unless a decent frontend is available :)
I made several approaches but I never went comfortable with such tools.

Re: GTD application like Things ?

I finally got around to uploading it to extras-devel. Check out "qtdone". Category support is a bit half-assed so far, you can't chance it for existing item.

Yes, there will be updates. I have a summer holiday coming up, so I can use some time to get it to extras, finish category support and possibly add sms/email integration through qt mobility.

Anyone tried Tiddlywiki & mGSD?
It is web-based and lightweight. It doesn't require lots of tweaking and has all the nuts and bolts of the full GTD workflow.
I've posted a thread about an issue here:
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=65779

I do believe it's one of the most essential PIM app for mobile platforms. It has already been ported to N800 but there is no N900 build yet. :(

... but no one seems to be interested?
