N900 Visual Voicemail

Now this would be nice to have, especially considering T-Mobile's network supports such a service.

I mean come on, visual voicemail would just make my anxiety for the N900 even greater than it already is... one can hope!

Google Voice will only be needed. Transcripts FTW!

How does GV affect/interact w/regular GSM so that you can get visual voicemail with GSM calls if GV is software based VOIP?

I set up my GV number as my GSM voicemail number, meaning if someone calls my GSM line, and I don't pick up, it forwards them to my GV number, which will in turn ring my VOIP and any other phones, and if I still don't answer it goes to my GV voicemail.

So my GV replaces the GSM providers voicemail.

To set up conditional forwarding on T-Mobile, in your phone enter:
Code:

*004*yourGVnum#
and then press send, and then any calls which would've gone to your original voicemail will be forwarded to GV instead.

To cancel conditional forwarding on T-Mobile, in your phone enter:
Code:

#004#
and then press send, and then your original voicemail settings are restored.

Is anyone working on a client version of gv that will download the messages to the phone rather than having to pull them down real time?

Can't google voice send voicemail and sms to your gmail now? Maybe it is just sms, though, not sure

Are there any per call forwarded charges incurred?

T-mobile gives me 500 forwarding minutes per billing cycle, I haven't gone over yet, but I think after those 500 are used up, it will be counted as regular airtime minutes.

it is just an SMS with a speech-to-text translation the sound clip lives on the server.

It would be nice if we could have a GV app similar to the Youmail apps.

Though it would definitely help if GV had an official API as Youmail does.

Re: N900 Visual Voicemail

For those who are puzzled by the term visual voicemail: see Wikipedia. Its a graphical user interface to the voice mail menu you used to access via numpad over GSM. Good news is, some folks are collaborating on making a standard for visual voicemail.

In the days of the answering machine the person who phoned paid to leave a message. Queue voicemail, you pay twice. And again to configure the damn thing. I don't like it, I rather put it off. If it is important 1) I phone back 2) person who phoned sends SMS 3) or that person phones back. No need for voicemail. At worst, if really necessary implement it on local level on the device, much like an answering machine.

Since I plan on getting involved with some dev work related to video-calls, a Google Wave invite would come in mighty handy.

I presume that Google Voice is part of Wave?

GV isnt part of wave, AFAIK - YET. Makes obvious sense to integrate it. HogWash, PM me for invite to wave.

These should get you going:

http://www.google.com/googlevoice/about.html
http://www.google.com/support/voice/

It might be a long wait to get a GV invitation. If you don't have the patience, you can buy an invitation on Ebay for $1-5.

sky4vip, by any chance, do you have another wave invite to spare?

did anyone get this to work? N900 wouldn't let me make the call. When I dial *004*....#, it complains of incorrect number.

I have the same problem. I input the number (correctly, i've checked several times) and then hit the "Call" key only to have "Incorrect Number" pop up.

If anyone has gotten this to work i'd sure like to know how.

Re: N900 Visual Voicemail

Tried the alternative solution on this website:

http://thenokiablog.com/2009/04/08/h...transcription/

But it doesnt work. Any number that I put in as my Forwarding number was considered an "Invalid Number".

I tried all the following formats:
+1GVnumber
+GVnumber
1GVnumber
GVnumber

None worked. Any help getting google voice to work with my n900 would be great.

Does T-mobile's visual voicemail have a published API? If so, we should be able to develop an app for it and not have to use youmail or google voice.

I searched but couldn't find anything published.

I have to admit I was puzzled when the iPhone was touted as the best thing since sliced bread because it had visual voicemail. I thought voicemail was like fax, cool at the time but nobody uses it anymore. I have not once in my life left a voicemail message or received one but apparently it's still quite popular somewhere. Just had to let this out, please don't mind and carry on. :)

I put the sim back into my free Nokia dumbphone to try this, and what do you know? It refused to do it, too. Could be my plan, could be T-Mobile. I haven't tried Customer Service yet, but I would bet they can do it.

If you log into Google Voice, --> Settings --> Phone --> Activate Google voicemail on this phone.

Google gives you a detailed description of how to set it up on your phone.

I tried it again but still got "Invalid Number".

What carrier are you with? Perhaps this functionality isnt supported on Tmobile without actually calling up their tech support.

See posts 21 and 22. We've tried the standard method of activating google voice on the n900 with no success. I'm open to suggestions if anyone has any other ideas.

t-mobile (US) - just worked for me putting the GV number in there - note that before that, the T-Mobile voicemail number was in that field. Trying the dial-based version from the phone dialer didn't work.

When are you getting "Invalid number"? and how are you entering the number itself?

Thank you! :) I tried that, and it did not work -- with both my N900 and my dumbphone. It may be because of my plan (prepaid sidekick.)

i go to
Settings -> Phone -> In the Forward to entry box. I enter my google voice number as +1googlevoice# then when i click the "Save" button the phone thinks for a few seconds and then i get the "Invalid Number" popup. I've tried entering the number with the physical qwerty keyboard and the touch screen keyboard. The number is the correct GV number and gv account does work as i've used it before to receive calls.

Could it possibly have something to do with the tmobile plan i'm on, "Even More Plus 500"?

Any thoughts?

NO # at the end... just enter +1xxxyyyzzz and it should be fine

i didnt put a # at the end... i was simply using the "#" to abbreviate for number. I enter my number exactly as you stated in you post (plus one z because your format would indeed be an invalid number) but even after inputting the correct number and pressing the Save button I get the "Invalid Number" popup/notifaction/whatever else you want to call it. meh.... if you cant see i'm getting tired of this.... i guess the easiest solution would be to tell people to just start calling my GV number and then it'd automatically use google voicemail but i'd rather not have to use that solution...

Sorry, misunderstood what you said. So I guess the question is, why is it working for me and not you, and frankly I'm stumped.

Was the T-Mobile voicemail number in there before? (+18056377243) ?

Re: N900 Visual Voicemail

it worked for me...on the N900 go to settings-->phone-->and under where it says "no answer in 20 seconds, unavailable or busy forward to +1(your google number)"

tested it out by calling my cell phone via my roomate's phone, and it worked...just the whole message was screwed up (did not exactly typed out what i said on the voicemail) lol it was funny to read, but nevertheless it worked!!!

lfcobra 2009-12-11 01:33

Re: N900 Visual Voicemail

The tmobile voice mail# its currently using is +18056377249

I just called tmobile tech support and they believe its an n900 issue, so they transfered me to Nokia support. And obviously Nokia support said it was a tmobile issue. HA! The nokia support guy did say he thinks that it may be because I hadnt set up my voicemail with tmobile yet (since its a new account). He said try setting up the default tmobile voicemail and then try changing the forwarding number (which after trying didnt work). So i'm out of idea! I'll try it again in the morning.
