Any reason why these weren't put into the general Maemo Summit thread? Just asking, no offense meant.

Because the only thing they talk about in the video's and play with is the Nokia N900.

I wanted to make people drool even more.... :p

Re: Nokia Maemo Summit Videos

I agree about the game stuttering. I hope it is because there are a bunch of apps running in the background. iPhone runs far more complex games with no stuttering at all. Not an iPhone fan, but the same chipset as the N900 runs 3D games smooth as butter.

Flash vids also seem to stutter.

Yes. iPhone has so tiny resolution, that it's easy to run everything smoothly - which eaven it doesn't always do, though...

Yes, the iPhone has less than half of the pixels to push around.

480 * 320 = 153600
800 * 480 = 384000

Yes besides the fact that particular N900 had eight applications running in the background I'm sure it runs much more faster, not to mention I hope that at the time that phone was tested the firmware is not final.

Re: Nokia Maemo Summit Videos

Pixels should not be a big issue if they are using hardware scaling. My guess is the game is not 800X480 res.

If games will be stuttering using hi res, scale it down- just like current Linux and PC games can in options. Or do not map any of the game with native res and allow the hardware scaling to do the work. Should be smooth as butter then :)

My guess is the N900 will rock with game smoothness- just would prefer to see a demo to show this. If I were Nokia marketing I would consider this. First impressions will kill ya! ;)

I also noted that there was an update for bounce, maybe that will improve perfomance.

I think itīs shown in the second vid.

Well the fact that Peter flat out said, when asked the question by one of the attendees that the N900 will eventually slow down/lag if you have too many performance intensive applications running, and the fact that when they started up the game, they already had eight other windows open three of which had some kind of flash playing on them, I think just goes to prove what Peter said originally. I would hope that with only one or two other windows open, then running the game everything would then be fine.

A guess is not a statement- it is a guess. It did not look 800X480 on the video, but that could be the the Youtube vid- I thought it was a hi res vid, but must be standard. I consdiered that the res is only as good as the source, but the textures and ball appeared slightly blocky- even considering the Youtube source res.

Somehow, I do not think you are so assertive in person, but I may be wrong.

Spent too many years in the Marines dealing with your type of attitude. Of course there, it is was easier to deal with ;)

Update:

I see, I did word that ***** backwards. Common sense is scaling does nothing if already at native res- I was referring that if the actual game was a lower res and was scaled to fill screen, hardware scaling would do the grunt work- unless executing routines through software. Hence my guess it was not at native res.

I am behind anyways, since my geek days were with the Amiga.

I would apologize but you already called me a dumbass..... You aren't like the comic book store owner in The Simpsons are you?

Flash 10.1 will be more friendly on resources. Even though a video would be played, if it is not on screen it will not be rendered. So that'd save some resources. But what should happen is stuff swap out. Q is where the bottleneck is (or was) in this particular case.

Stuttering and tearing on Linux desktop or game has different reason...

Well, it is playing through a composite video cable which is certainly not capable of carrying WVGA in full quality. :)

I did not catch the amount of apps open in the background (kids yelling in background when I was watching the vids).

This device would be perfect if it had host USB and a d-pad. Still blows anything else away. Unlike Android, Maemo should be far more efficient in executing apps.

Does anyone know if media (music & vids) placed on the micro-sd card will be integrated with the internal storage as one media directory?

Well then.

I guess hogboy was correct- I am a dumbass, because I did not notice it was on an external display. Then again I was a little sidetracked (kids do that).

Still do not like the attitude, but he ultimately was correct- though for an unintended reason.

I think as it is now in the n800 that the media indexer of the default media player does index all and put it as one library. But not as one media directory.

That will be good enough! I have a Creative Zen 32gb with external sd and it does not integrate.

Going to be a long few weeks, but fun to look forward to getting the N900 :)

Little point in fretting over it. Best to just ignore it and report it if it escalates out of control. ;)

Tracker should handle that transparently. The built-in media player doesn't browse by directory but by album/artist for music and either date or alphabetically for movies.

Sounds like Maemo has its stuff together in regards to media integration. It would be nice if units shipped next week, but since I ordered from Amazon and got free shipping.... might be awhile.

Nokia have a distribution hub in Kentucky? ;)

Check out

Several videos there I have never seen before including a pretty amazing one of the n900 playing 720p 4.2 MB divx clip out to a 50 inch 1080p TV. Quality is ... incredible and as far as I could see - smooth. Some jerking quality to the vid I attribute to the filmer zooming in and out jerkily.

Careful, 720x400 isn't 720p ;-)

Because what I used was a demo device for the press event, not my own one. I don't like my private Facebook messages shown around the world. ;-)

it's just you! ;-) You need to jump. Hold the N900 flat and jump forward, then the ball will jump over the logs.
