N900 PC Suite Internet access

Can anyone tell me if the N900 can be used to connect my latptop to the internet via USB cable and the Nokia PC Suite?

I current use the E71 to do this, and it is very easy. I just plug in the E71 to my laptop, and the E71 asks if I wan to connect PC to web.

I understand that PC suite works with N900, so hopefully this feature is there also.:)

Thanks in advance

According to these specifications, the N900 has "capability to serve as data modem via USB connection".

Cheers, but the question was more aimed at integration with nokia PC Suit, which makes USB Data Modem access a 1 click affair

Re: N900 PC Suite Internet access

Current version of PC Suite doesn't support the N900, so I couldn't tried it.

However, I did try to connect the PC to the N900 via Bluetooth to access the internet, but once the N900 has been paired with the PC, it says there are no services on N900 which could be used for internet connection. So, I'm not sure.

It could be that I have an earlier version of the firmware.

How do you do that? Do you think the N95 is capable of doing this as well? Let me know what I need to do this. Also, is the internet connection comparatively fast?

Re: N900 PC Suite Internet access

I personally hope that pc suite is not needed as it is too much hassle, and then also has to be installed on each computer you want to tether to.

Currently I use my iPhone to tether, if it's plugged in to the computer via USB, all I need to do is then activate tethering through the phone and just like magic the computer sees the available Internet connection and just connects. No messing around with any pc suite software required

Hi X61, the N95 also does this, as I have one of those as well.
As long as you have pc suit on your er.... PC (its now called OVI Suit) then it should just work. This does make the assumption that you have a data plan with your network provider of course.

Hi Dan, one of the nice things with PC Suit (Now called OVI suit) is that it shows you on your PC the amount of data that is going up an down. As I use OVI Suit to backup and sync my phone, its not a real problem.

I will go and try and do the same on a machine without PC Suit, as i'm sure it works without as well.

maemoguy, what happens on the N900 when you plug your N900 into the PC WITHOUT PC suit. Does it come up with menu options like the symbian devices and allow you to choose between Mass storage, pc suit, connect to web etc?

Re: N900 PC Suite Internet access

Hey mikec,

yeah an answer there would be excellent. If the tethering does work without the need for ovi suite then I'm pretty sure we could still monitor data usage, either through what's already on the device, or maybe even a neat little widget

Re: N900 PC Suite Internet access

Just plugged my E71 into a windows PC without PC Suite. Immediately E71 offers you the choice of mass storage, pc suite or connect this pc to web.
I selected connect PC to web.
Windows then started to mount E71 as mass storage and installed drivers and PC Internet connection wizard!!
I assume it downloaded this from the E71 itself and then connected.

Now Anyone with a N900 tell us what happens when you plug n900 into PC without PC Suit?

How do you mean? N900 offers mass storage, PC suite and recharging when plugging in USB. PC Suite itself: No idea as I don't have a Winfows installation around...

Nokia Ovi Suite 2.0.0.10 was released today. It is still not a final build, and I don't have a changelog. Link.

Re: N900 PC Suite Internet access

I can confirm that N900 can give You access to Internet via both Ovi Suite and PC-suite with BT and USB. I have used my proto device over one month and there haven't been any troubles with Internet access.

It's only two clicks and Your PC is in internet.

Does the N900 connect via bluetooth too? (a la S60 devices can)

Re: N900 PC Suite Internet access

Yes also via bluetooth and USB. The connection is more stable than with E90 and E75.

that's interesting. In my case, Ovi (version 2.0.0.10) failed to recognize my N900.

Here is the Ovi Suite information.
Code:

Nokia Ovi Suite 2.0.0.10

Nokia PC Suite 7.1.30.9

PC Connectivity Solution 9.38.0.0

Connectivity Cable Driver 7.1.20.0

Nokia Ovi Suite Software Updater 2009.34.0.60056

Maps Service API 3.0.35.0

Nokia mPlatform 2.5.168

Ovi Desktop Sync Engine 1.0.0.684

Operating system:
Microsoft Windows XP 32-bit Edition, Service Pack 3
Language: English

Detected internet browsers:
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0.5730.11

Detected Bluetooth stacks:
- Microsoft (Version: 5.1.2600, Build: 5512)

What version are you running?

PC Suite, however, recognized it instantly.

Re: N900 PC Suite Internet access

The first 300 registered attendees at the Maemo Summit received one for a 6 month loan. Then there were also a few pre-production units provided to some folks even earlier.

I'm not in any of those groups, but this is the situation as I understand it.

Has anybody found a solution for this!
I don't know how can this sell if the PC - MODEM / internet capabilities are so limited!

N900 is good to have all the features, but how do one survive without being able to hook up internet on N900 with a PC / notebook! :(

This is discouraging for me being a first time NOKIA user.

Please HELPPPPPPPP Nokia?!?!

Re: N900 PC Suite Internet access

Just got my N900 and browsing around for information. This site looked great;).

Regarding the internet connection I am using the PC-Suite 7.1.40.6 and the phone is version 2.2009.51-1 and it is working OK. I am actually posting this reply using the Windows XP PC connected to web via the N900.

Connect the N900 with the USB cable CA-101. Choose "PC-Suite mode" on the phone.

Start the PC-Suite on the PC (if not automatically). Choose "N900 (PC-Suite Mode)" in the top left corner. OBS! Your phone could have another name.

Click the "Connect to internet" (Green circle with two arrows).

You will get a window saying "One touch access" and you're done.

The speed on my PC is 460kbps..

Good luck:p!

Again I have to ask. Why did they offer this phone when even their software is not supported. Can't even use one of the features, tethering, of this phone.

What were they thinking

PC Suite was designed for Symbian phones, not Maemo. The N900 is capable of tethering quite happily using the software as described by one user above: are you not able to get the same result or missed the point?

I never use PC Suite to tether, neither Symbian, Maemo nor Sony Ericsson and Samsung dumbphone (yes, they can tether)

Just use the built in Windows network menu to create a new Dial Up Connection, select the modem (N900 USB or N900 Bluetooth), enter the phone number, username and password, and any extra init string required (all are carrier specific). Change port speed if necesary and you are all set.
