Sync N900 with Mac OS X
Hi,
There is no support for sync with Mac OS X, so what to do? At Maemo Summit I was able sync my new Nokia N900 with my old Nokia E75 and it works perfect. Now when I add new contact or a meeting on my Mac or on my N900, what to do? How to keep it in sync? I found out if I add a new contact on my Mac I was able to export it as a Vcard-file and then send it to the N900 and it works. But what about the Calendar? It look like N900 don't support import a Ical-file (*.ics) What to do? |
Re: Sync N900 with Mac OS X
A workaround is getting a software that syncs your iCal to Google Calendar (e.g. BusySync $25), then setup Mail for Exchange on the N900 to sync up with Google (Calendar and Contacts (if you want)).
Note however that right now, Google only would allow you to sync only one category on your Google Calendar (the first category). I agree that the calendar should support .ics. |
Re: Sync N900 with Mac OS X
Mail on OS X ought to be able to sync with a Google Calendar. I believe that some recent changes made the GCal. read/write. So if the 900 can sync to GCal you'd be OK. Otherwise I suppose we'll be waiting on Ermining to get ported or tested to see if it works (assuming GPE calendar will work).

oh right.. there is Exchange support on Snow Leopard. How does that work out with google backend?

Re: Sync N900 with Mac OS X
Hi,
Nokia/Maemo noob here.I've been looking around for info on mac and n900 sync for a long time and found nothing. Except this thread... I'm on mac, my iphone died couple of weeks ago and I REALLY like the N900 and would like to get one soon. Now it seems to me that the lack of sync with mac for email, ical, etc,... is a big no no point. Is there a way to accomplish this via Ovi desktop? What about some 3rd party software? Is there a Nokia roadmap for mac OS X support? Cheers, R |

I have got a t-mobile G1 and Ive been using Spanning Sync on my Mac to sync up my iCal with google calendar and to sync up Address Book with google contacts. Works like a charm!

Re: Sync N900 with Mac OS X
Nokia N900 has official SyncML support out of the box.
Nokia made plugin for iSync. This iSync plugin must be updated to support Nokia N900 and then you're good to go. Yes, there are no Maemo devices listed which currently work with iSync. There was indeed no iSync support for Nokia 770/N800/N810(WME). However, these devices also did not support SyncML. FWIW, I use iSync with my Nokia E71 (utilizes SyncML too) and works well. Quote:

...but the iCalendar files OSX its iCal application spews out I could not import on my Nokia E71 either. Maybe try to import a *.ics from a credible source, or export a *.ics from Nokia N900, then try to import it again. |
Re: Sync N900 with Mac OS X
You don't need to purchase software to sync Google Calendar with iCal:

Re: Sync N900 with Mac OS X
I'm now in this boat too. I'm not a heavy contacts/calendar user (I really need to start being a heavy calendar user, lol) so constant syncing probably isn't a big deal for me. Hopefully I can at least just import a vCard with multiple contacts so I can just bring all my contacts at once, and "sync" back to my address book the same way. Hope the N900 is smart with duplicate contacts.
I wonder if there is a chance of being able to sync contacts/calendar via mobileme? |
Re: Sync N900 with Mac OS X
Unfortunately MfE is horribly broken where if you merge a skype and a regular contact you break it. On top of that some other fields like birthdays sync with the wrong dates being put into your phone and some fields just don't sync at all. I would just like my syncml support back...And I used the device on my bootcamp partition and the sync to windows contacts is just plain beautiful. It would be nice to just get the isync plugin, or syncml support, or ovi mac software. We seriously have nothing but what I have found to be a stressful, annoying, and contact breaking google sync.

Any development here?
|
Re: Sync N900 with Mac OS X
so far none. before this device came out I always thought that this uses MfE and I can configure mac with google calendar and ical and use sync to sync with google contacts that way everything will be synced in cloud, but when this device came out and I used and tried to do it that way, kabam!!!! nope it did not work. apparently N900 and google do not want to sync through MfE.
Now only hope either nokia releasing an isync file for N900 or straighten up the MfE and google sync. |
Re: Sync N900 with Mac OS X
you can download the iSync plugin from here:
https://garage.maemo.org/frs/?group_...elease_id=3160 You'll also need to download Bluetooth DUN on your Nokia N900 in order to be able to add the device to iSync. It works well for me. |
Re: Sync N900 with Mac OS X
Dinho, does it _really_ work? :)

Re: Sync N900 with Mac OS X
It does. But I found that when I made changes in AB on my MacBook, the changes get synced perfectly. But if I change something in the Contacts app on N900, and then sync with AB, the address entry in AB gets messed up. AB creates a new entry for the address and puts street, city, state and zip code all together in the street field.
For the time being I only make changes in AB, but not on N900. Hopefully it gets fixed soon or Nokia releases the official iSync plugin. |
Re: Sync N900 with Mac OS X
I can't add the device to my iSynch..

Re: Sync N900 with Mac OS X
Sorry, this is the link to the plugin that I'm using: http://www.smithfamily.org.uk/~dgs/N900iSync/
You might want to try this. It requires Bluetooth DUN installed on N900. |
Re: Sync N900 with Mac OS X
Yeah i've got the DUN installed on my n900. I dont have to 'start' it in any way do I ?
|
Re: Sync N900 with Mac OS X
No, there is nothing you need to do with Bluetooth DUN.

Re: Sync N900 with Mac OS X
These guys are working on it on this thread.

Re: Sync N900 with Mac OS X
Got it working, thanks.

Re: Sync N900 with Mac OS X
Hey, I'm also a mac user considering the N900
From the discussion above I now take it that syncing iCal and AB with N900 now works but I was wondering how the colour coding and "full day activity" in iCal is transfered to the N900? Is it seamless and neat? Thanks! |
Re: Sync N900 with Mac OS X
Instead of using iSync to import an iCal .ics to Maemo Calendar, try GPE Calendar. The alternative GPE Calendar app handles the import fine, and exports a .ics file that Maemo's native Calendar app can deal with. I just posted detailed instructions on my blog.
Basically, install GPE Calendar, have it import the .ics file, run the command line command gpe-calendar -e filename.ics and open that in File Manager to get your events correctly imported into Maemo Calendar. |
