N900 device program for maemo.org developers and contributors

This email has been sent to maemo.org developers and contributors with karma +200:

Quote:

Dear maemo.org contributor,

After the Maemo Summit, the N900 device program is making an additional step focusing on the maemo.org community.

You are eligible for a N900 device discount thanks to your contributions to the Maemo community. The approximate reduced price is 300€ approximately. The final amount might vary in different countries.

We recommend you to use this option before the end of the year. We can't guarantee a discounted device for you after that date. In fact, the sooner you can answer the better since the requests will be dealt on a first come, first served basis.

IMPORTANT STEPS

1) Go to ((( http://forum.nokia.com/maemo related URL ))) and login using your Forum Nokia username and password. If you don't have FN username yet, you will first need to register and create one at https://www.forum.nokia.com/Sign_Up.xhtml . Using the same ID and email address than in maemo.org will make your life easier but it's not required.

2) Fill in the form and submit.

3. Send an email to ********@nokia.com with the subject "N900 maemo.org program" specifying your Forum Nokia ID (and your maemo.org ID if different).

They will check all requests, making sure that they come from people in the list of maemo.org contributors we have provided. Don't send the link above to anybody. Applications from people not in the list will be rejected anyway.

This invitation is compatible with previous steps of the N900 device program. If you got a pre-production device on loan you can still keep it for the period agreed and get the discounted device. All we ask you is to make good use of the devices you have e.g. finding a community developer to bring more software to Maemo 5. Otherwise you can return the loaned device.

If you have questions please use the discussion thread in talk.maemo.org: *************

Thank you very much for your interest in the Maemo platform! And thank you very much for your maemo.org contributions.

Re: N900 device program for maemo.org developers and contributors

that's nice of nokia :) (though I guess they know what they are doing - after 10 devices with maemo are out, and there are houndreds of developers, they won't be doing such actions, that's for sure :) )

I guess I have no chance at all, with my few discussion messages and no packages (yet) created.. :) oh, well.. let's buy full-priced n900, develop apps, and hopefully n900+1 will be offered for such nice price later too :)

Can this one be clarified how this would work in practice? I mean, we (summit attendees, etc) have a signed loan agreement with you and the guy/girl getting it doesn't.

If it can work out decently in practice, I welcome this move.

Re: N900 device program for maemo.org developers and contributors

I counted 150 people, more or less, above 200 points. And some are Nokia employees.
Considering they gave more than 300 devices for free, it makes up for more or less 500 devices for enaged Maemo users/developers.

That's the same number of devices they were giving away with former discounts (for the 770, n800, n810).

The price is higher now, but more than 300 were given away for free...

yerga 2009-10-16 12:16

Re: N900 device program for maemo.org developers and contributors

A quick question:
If I apply for the program, how long will I have to do effective the discount?

I mean, it's impossible for me to use 300 € for something different to food and bills until the next February.
But if it's possible to use the discount in February, I'd apply.

"The price is higher now, but more than 300 were given away for free... "

Not for free ... for loan until april.

Re: N900 device program for maemo.org developers and contributors

It looks like if your application is approved, the N900 would appear as an item you can purchase at forum.nokia.com's estore.

That's a neat way of doing it. :)

Re: N900 device program for maemo.org developers and contributors

Can I kindly ask if any of you are contemplating Flash/Flex dev on these devices that I could assist or be "in the know" at least in terms of performance, do's and dont's?

Sadly enough, my karma is waaaaay too low to register as even a blip on the aforementioned list of community karma.

I know/understand NDA's, but thought I'd put that out there.

morphbr 2009-10-16 12:28

Re: N900 device program for maemo.org developers and contributors

Will the devices be shipped to our homes or will be just like in the past where we get a code to buy online ? I'm just asking this to know if I should save some money for the taxes :)

Cheers!

penguinbait 2009-10-16 12:34

Re: N900 device program for maemo.org developers and contributors

Well I received the email, but I am not sure I will purchase on the developer device program.

I can get one new for $549

I can get one for $449 on the developer device program.

I am really hoping to get one from a carrier for $200 or less. Not really much of a discount if you ask me.

They didn't give 300 devices for free. It's not a gift, it's a loan. Completely different.

Of course I can continue developing and testing my application until 31th of April, but what if I cannot afford spending 300€?

It's much more than the 99€ that N810 costed to developers.

I really don't know what to do now....

Re: N900 device program for maemo.org developers and contributors

I got nice ideas for apps, so I'm highly interested in getting one device as part of the dev program for the app I have in mind - but it seems I don't have enough karma. Maybe not active enough on maemo.org, who knows ? :)

Any change of getting wildcards for low karma based on app ideas and presentations ? Or should I begin working harder on the forum waiting for the maemo 6 release ?

eiffel 2009-10-16 12:42

Re: N900 device program for maemo.org developers and contributors

I'm not complaining (really!) but it hurts a bit to see people who've joined less than a month ago, and whose posts are somewhat fluffy, who already have more karma than me.

But I know and accept that any developer program must be somewhat arbitrary. "The perfect is the enemy of the good", as they say. C'est la vie.

Regards,
Roger

Maybe it is not so much different, see discussion below http://lwn.net/Articles/356520/. What are exact terms? Maybe Nokia doesn't want to get it back so badly? There is also this "All we ask you is to make good use of the devices you have. Otherwise you can return the loaned device." confusing phrase in today's developer discount mail.

qgil 2009-10-16 12:49

Re: N900 device program for maemo.org developers and contributors

We can't really tell now the availability in 2010. Hopefully yes but I can't commit on that.

The price might change depending on the country. I have asked the price in USA.

After doing the purchase in Forum Nokia website you receive the device at home. No vouchers like in past editions.

If you have specific questions about practicalities in Forum Nokia's end feel free asking in the email address provided. The role of the Maemo Team has been to provide the list of names, but the operation, congratulations and merits belong to Forum Nokia. Like many things Maemo, they are opening this service (they provide to professional developers regularly) for community developers for the first time.

Re: N900 device program for maemo.org developers and contributors

Forum Nokia is incredibly slow on my system -- haven't been able to register yet. Hopefully, zillions of people aren't all trying to register at once and it's just %*&^%(*&^% Time Warner Cable that is causing the slowdown for me.

anidel 2009-10-16 12:53

Re: N900 device program for maemo.org developers and contributors

Even if they don't want them back, they will NEVER say it explicitly.
So don't even bother asking.

Nokia gave those devices because people who can't afford it can still play with it.
You got it, use it wisely, develop on it and still be an active member of the community,

I too would have liked a stronger discount, but that's the way Nokia has always worked (I believe). They won't (and they are not) changing it now.

No need to complain, it won't change.
Let's push this complaint for the NEXT developer program and see if something better can be achieved.

Former devices got the same amount of discount (300€ circa), so nothing is really different here.
Same amount of devices, same amount of discount, just in different guise.

I personally may not use it as I got the loan for a year.
I can understand having it for only 6months and having to spend 300€ may be too much.
But just use it for a month or two and then decide if it's worth a Christmas Gift.

Seconding yerga, here. I do not have the funds available for me to justify ordering a device now. So, my question is: Do we have a time period in which the discount must be used? If so, I'll have to bail on the program as I do not (and will not for a long while) have the funds available.

Finally, I do not own a company, and nor am I working in one (I am a student); what am I expected to enter for the "company I work in"?

Thank you.

Re: N900 device program for maemo.org developers and contributors

Comparisons with previous programs are not linear. The N900 is a primary device and the reference discount price is about half of the retail price.

Do you ever got a laptop discount from a vendor for your community development and contributions?

You are not forced to accept the invitation and I'm sorry if some of you are not happy with it...

I don't know if you talking to me :)
I tried to defend this developer program and tried to pipe the complaint pushing them on the next developer program (if any and when).

I am saying roughly the same you're saying now.

For me it prints
# 'User Province' is a required field.
# 'Company Name' is a required field.
# 'Company URL' is a required field.
# 'Company Province' is a required field.
# 'Company VAT Number' is a required field.
While I am not against being a bit creative when filling registration forms I guess I really shouldn't fake Company VAT Number :)

Hmm. My own fault, I am sad to establish. Hopefully, there'll be a carrier discount whenever they come out over here (USA). Otherwise, the SDK will hopefully suffice.
