Fallout,Arcanum,Planescape-Torment Baldures gate on n900 in the future?

Hello,

Newly regesterd person here!

So, I made op my mind; I'm going to get the n900!
As for the future of this phone, I wondered if the n900 could handle the best RPG's ever made: Fallout(1,2), Arcanum and Planescape-Torment. I know there is something in beta for baldure's gate serie so thats a start.

So my question is what do you guys think? Will the n900 be able to run these games? won't maemo cause any problems here?

Let me hear you thoughts

Tnx

best regards
Oracle

Are these games open source? If not, game over. If so, how about becoming a Maemo rock star and porting them yourself?

It is not possible.

Fallout 1 and 2 are closed source (the others probably too, didn't check). There has been a project to create an open source Fallout engine, but even that was stopped by licensing issues of the SPECIAL system.

The only way to run FO1 (maybe 2 too) is Dosbox, but it will be unplayably slow.

Thanks for the replies.

FO1 via dosbox will be slow indeed. There was one video where they got FO running via dosbox on the psp. Guess it won't work any better on the n900.

too bad..

Well, Baldur's gate was working almost acceptably on N800, so probably will be better on N900 if someone compiles and adapts GemRB for it...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icyAgs3dFqU

The aim of GemRB is to support all games supported by the Bioware engine, which includes the Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale series plus Planescape Torment. Many addons should work too.

At least that's the official statement :)

GemRB looks very promising! however I get the feeling that is pretty much dead..:(

maybe with the release of the n900, people might pick it up again..

Maybe FIVE could be something to look into? It's open source isometric rpg engine. It does not let you play fallout games at the moment (if ever -who knows :)) ..but at least there is already built in support for fallout data; animations, graphics, maps etc. There are a few projects on development which are using this engine.

It's cross platform, uses oggvorbis for sound and uses SDL or OpenGL backend for rendering.

FreeSynd is an open source engine for Syndicate, that could be pretty good. Syndicate Wars would be better, but no idea if there's a version for that.

Heh, I'm UAE-ing my Amiga 3000 little by little to put it on my PC. I have the original Syndicate game from that platform. Those were the days...

Bioware games would be nice, looks like GemRB holds promise. Maybe when the N900 user base can post some significant numbers we can petition some of the devs/software houses to release their old source. Not to say that it is a small task to prep and release game source code for some companies. Time and $ always factor in, despite how simple it seems to us.

Yes, FIFE is possibly the project referred to by hqh in post #3?

It used to be an effort to make a Free Isometric Fallout Engine, but it now stands for Flexible Isometric Free Engine.

It looks very interesting. On the other hand, it has looked very interesting for several years now. I think its development is slow, but steady.

Edit:

For fans of Fallout, PARPG (post-apocalyptic roleplaying game) might be an interesting project. It uses FIFE and is "currently moving towards a first techdemo release".

Maybe going off-topic? But I would LOVE to see Counter-Strike (any version) on the N900! :D

I don't know what the status of this project got to before being abandoned, but there seems to an open source Fallout engine here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ianout/

It would be super cool if someone could pick it up and make it run on the N900. :D

Planescape torment works fine with GemRB, using cheat keys, its completeable.

Icyseanfitz dream already came true:
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...ighlight=gemrb

It's not the best(i don't think you can complete the game :/ ), but don't give up hope. There still coming out new versions of gemrb :)

BG2 is very completable.. works fine for me anyway :)

BG1, planescape and icewind however is more problematic, they have some problems.. f.ex in BG1 the random spawned monsters in the wild are way to powerfull and kill you in no time, wich means you gotta cheat to complete it properly.
