Maemo Mapper v1.2 Released
Okay, I know it's been a while, but I finally scrounged up enough time to release Maemo Mapper v1.2, months in the making. It should be showing up in the Maemo Garage repository shortly, or just get it directly from the Maemo Mapper Files page.
RELEASE NOTES: Maemo Mapper v1.2 has been released with much new functionality, including support for textual GPS information and for points of interest (POI), using patches by Cezary Jackiewicz. Also, multiple repositories are supported, and support for the command-line version of flite is back. Plus, I've rebuilt flite v1.3 to work with IT2006. It is downloadable from the same repository as maemo-mapper (garage's "extras" repository). There are also many minor bugfixes and other improvements, such as the ability to re-assign the Escape key to do different things. See the changelog. I wish I had documentation for all of the new functionality, but my time is limited, so hopefully it is intuitive enough. :/ The new deb has been submitted to the garage's "extras" repository, but until it refreshes, you can download straight from the maemo-mapper garage Files list. The new version of flite will also be in the "extras" repository, and it is also here: http://www.gnuite.com/nokia770/flite_1.3_armel.deb NOTE: Maemo Mapper does not require flite to run, so it is not listed as a dependency. You must install it separately in order to hear voice announcements. This release is only minimally tested, so please file bug reports on the Maemo Mapper Bug Tracker if you find anything out of the ordinary. Again, feel free to offer up suggestions either in the ITT discussion thread or by adding to the Maemo Mapper Feature Request Tracker. And if you like using Maemo Mapper, please consider donating via the donation button at http://www.gnuite.com/nokia770/maemo-mapper/. |
thank you again
thanx for flite, and mm

$20 is on the way for a great app.

Well, this version include my latest patches (poi and gpsinfo), but not working for me: glibc detected free(): invalid pointer: 0x000508f4 :).
This version used libsqlite0 (v2 - from gpe), not libsqlite3-0 (v3 - from my repository). -- Cezary |
Ok, here's my feedback.
Tried to start it and all gone well, but as soon as I enable the GPS it crashes. Ok, I tuned it to use the rfcomm instead of the GPS MAC, so I let it scan for the GPS, but after 5 minutes it gets locked (as usual without the /dev/rfcomm trick) As of now I reinstalled the previous version, since also flite wasn't useful. I tried with 1.1 + flite installed but I still get the beep instead of the voice. Is there any solution for this or do I have to reset the bluetooth radio each time? Bye, Omar PS. Regarding the POI matter, I installed the libsqlite provided with gpe |

The funny thing is, it worked then I first started it, then I played around and added a few POIs and enabled flite. Now it won't start. |
Crashed once so far. Otherwise works fine. POI works too.
$20 is on the way. Thank you, John! |
Can't uninstall
I have tried the previous version, tried to uninstall it, but it refuses to. It's no longer listed as an 'installed application', but it is still there on my menu. It has the Maemo default icon though, but it still launches. Any idea on how to remove it completely?

great update. btw "apt-get install libsqlite0" worked for me (too bad it's not the new sqlite3)
i'll definately donate when i'm on a safe connection. edit: bug: when you add poi icons it looks funny (they're displayed in the wrong position) |
i took some photos of maemo mapper in action. check out http://nurey.blogspot.com/2006/10/i-...s-present.html
|
Hmm.. I also installed it and it worked fine when I loaded it. I enabled flite and when I attempted to subsequently load it nothing happened. When I load it from the console, I get a Seg fault.
I was going to remove the maemo-mapper config file and try again, but I couldn't find where the config details are stored ? I've restarted the device after removing the battery, and tried removing and reinstalling, no luck. Cheers |
To everyone that is having problems: if you know how to capture sample output from your GPS receiver, can you please PM that to me? I have been unable to reproduce the segfault problem, and it may be related to the NMEA output of your particular GPS receivers. If you don't know how to capture the NMEA output, at least let me know what GPS receiver you are using. (Is anyone using an iBlue GPS receiver and also experiencing segfaults?)
And if you don't mind sending me your gconf configuration data (from an xterm: gconftool-2 -a "/apps/maemo/maemo-mapper"), that may also be helpful. Thanks. |
And to those of you that are now unable to start maemo mapper at all, resetting your gconf settings may help you. From an xterm:
gconftool-2 --recursive-unset "/apps/maemo/maemo-mapper" NOTE: You will, of course, lose all your previously saved settings, although your maps will still remain where you had previously downloaded them (in order to see them, you may have to set your repository's cache dir after resetting your gconf settings). If you do end up resetting your settings, let me know if you experience further segfaults or other errors. It is possible that some of these issues are cropping up due to maemo-mapper 1.2's attempt to "upgrade" from the 1.1 settings layout. |
hi
maemo-mapper 1.2 not starter. From xterminal error /home/user # maemo-mapper osso_initialize failed. ~ $ maemo-mapper *** glibc detected *** free(): invalid pointer: 0x0005061e *** Aborted advice? thanks from Italy |

Maemo-Mapper 1.2 is great! (Just one minor feature...)
Hi John,
this is a great "feature release". Thanks for integrating the features I requested (and demonstrated with my patches/modified 1.1 version). There is only one minor feature I proposed for 1.1 missing in 1.2, the "option to operate with closed cover": if gconf-setting /system/osso/connectivity/IAP/disconnect_on_cover is not true, then in osso_cb_hw_state() Code:
set_conn_state(RCVR_OFF); It would be great if you could integrate this feature, too. See also garage.maemo.org, feature request #106: https://garage.maemo.org/tracker/ind...id=29&atid=188 regards, Armin. |
No segfault after cleaning the configuration settings !
Thanks very much, the tool is excellent. Gav |

Maemo Mapper v1.2.1 Released
Maemo Mapper v1.2.1 is released and available for download on the Maemo Mapper Garage Files page. It should also now be available in the garage's extras (aka contrib) repository.
This release fixes the silly g_free error and a couple other cosmetic bugs. There may still be crashes, but I need more info before I can fix them. Also added is support for recognition of the "disconnect-when-off" flag. Thanks for the feedback so far, guys; it is always welcome. Repository Reminders: maemo-mapper and flite are in the Garage Repository: Web address: http://repository.maemo.org/extras (formerly "contrib") Distribution: 2.0 Components: free non-free (maemo-mapper is also available directly from the garage page; flite can also be downloaded from http://www.gnuite.com/nokia770/flite_1.3_armel.deb.) The libsqlite0 package on which maemo-mapper depends is in the GPE repository: Web address: http://downloads.kernelconcepts.de/maemo2 Distribution: mistral Components: free (it can also be downloaded directly from http://downloads.kernelconcepts.de/m...13-2_armel.deb |
Hi Gnuite! thanks for your work up to now. I haven't tested the new version yet, though I let flite say something.
Is there any hope to include the local pronounce of the voices such as in the regular linux festival version? I'm talking about these: www.usinglinux.org/audio/ Bye, Omar |

mm 1.2.1 seems to be working for me
hi gnuite !
you are so fast ! just tested the update. it seems working now. but i must be clear : because of to much test (i think) my app manager refuse to manage anything. i wasnt able to see any installed app, see the repertory or install anything. so i just decided to reflash a new os. after that i have just installed lib, and mapper and it is working fine. now, no need to erase conf with xterm it is working fine, but i can't affirm now that the previous problem was comming from the update... the most important i that it is working. i will take this during my trip this week. i think it will be usefull ! thanks tyou and all actors helpin and developping his app ! Thanks ... this did the trick. I also used the -a option to dump the original gconf settings to a file before I wiped them. So if you want a copy for debugging purposes, let me know your email address at michael.wiktowy (at) gmail.com. However, it seems that you have put out another version that may have fixed this problem to begin with. |
OK, it's not working for me
Thanks, gnuite for a great app - but 1.2.1 just isn't working for me. My GPS (Nokia LD-3W) was rock-solid under 1.1, now 1.2.1 loses connection, the /dev/rfcomm0 trick doesn't work, and more often than not 1.2.1 segfaults on startup. A clearing of the settings with
gconftool-2 --recursive-unset "/apps/maemo/maemo-mapper" means it starts again, but then errors immediatly. It also can't scan for my GPS. I've kept the 1.1 binary, but this now seqfaults when I run it. So how do I gracefully downgrade :D ? Also, flite just segfaults immediately - any ideas? |
wow, nice bit of kit! worked right off wih my Rikaline GPS module. No muckin' about needed.
Where you you put the icons for pois? I still can't get winpoi to work. Used google earth pro, selected my area (portland), right-clicked saved as kml file. Worked thru the steps in winpoi, it said it was done, put the resultant db onto N770. MM says it's either encrypted or not a db. um, ok. There 's got to be an easier way of doing this? |

Not the most intuitive system in the world, I know, but it works. |

To downgrade, you should uninstall the old version, run the gconftool-2 --recursive-unset command, then install the 1.1 deb (downloadable from here). |
Maemo Mapper v1.2.2 Released
Maemo Mapper v1.2.2 has been released with fixes to bugs #109, #110, and #111. There is no new functionality. You can download and install now from the Maemo Mapper Garage Files page, or just upgrade directly via the Maemo Garage Extras repository (v1.2.2 is there already).
There is no rushing need to download this version, unless you absolutely need to be able to create POI's with apostrophes in their labels or descriptions. |

Off Topic / Sorry
Any thoughts on some speed warnings?
if speed > 80 ALERT (flite text) if speed < 45 ALERT (flite text) Have a menu where you can create multiple rules, with customizable <>= / SPEED / flite text Also, its really hard to look down and see your speed intermixed with everything else. it would be nice to be able to have check box configuration to add or remove speed/ lat / lon / sat info, you get the idea. Any thoughts on rotating maps so its always going up on the screen, I must admit I am somewhat dislexic when it comes to heading south, I alway turn the wrong way, I guess I am a little slow. Also now that you are including all the information about speed / heading / lat / lon is there any chance we will get a NMEA output feature in the setup dialog that will log all NMEA data while using MM. Anyway just ideas??? Thanks |

Can you currently use POI labels to specify the start and destination for downloading routes? I don't suppose you can but I can't check at the moment due to lack of wireless. Some issues with POI labels not being unique could pose some UI problems but it seems like it could be a useful enhancement.
I am trying to find a simple means of planning a route from arbitrary point A to arbitrary point B. The point A and B are arbitrary since they may be rural addresses and destinations in national parks which are not all that clearly defined by address yet have road access on them visible on Google Maps. I can't see a means of doing this with mapper without a lot of transcription of coordinates. Anyone have a simple method that I am missing? |
