N900 umts?
I'm living in China right now and AFAIK China uses TD-SCDMA as opposed to W-CMDA (mainly b/c of Western patent issues..)
I am not too familiar with the different forms of 3G, but from what I've read, WCDMA and TD-SCDMA are both covered under UTMS. Am I correct? Assuming so, does the N900 fully support UTMS? as a side note, I'd be happy to help with any Chinese translation for the n900 if I can get my hands on one over here:) |
Re: N900 utms?
Excellent post! I am glad you live in China and interested in n900. I think most phones in China use sim cards. Any way to make the n900 use sim-card or can it be done?
According to this, n900 is "Regional Availability: Europe, Middle East, North America...", nokia is NOT planning n900 to Asia at this moment. bun |
Re: N900 utms?
China currently has good GSM coverage. I am worried about 3G coverage under the TD-SCDMA band. The website above mentions WCDMA only, but I wonder if the N900 in fact supports TD-SCDMA as well, since both are covered under UTMS

Sure, that the n900 uses SIM-Cards^^ |
Re: N900 utms?
You can just use China Unicom's sim cards if you want use 3G.

Re: N900 utms?
I highly doubt that the N900 will work with TD-SCDMA based 3G services. It is a fundamentally different technology from W-CDMA...one is time-division and one is frequency-division. Maybe compatibility is an "undocumented feature", but I wouldn't hold my breath. Most major Chinese providers will likely be moving towards deploying W-CDMA in the relatively near future according to this:

2) If it does, can one buy n900 in USA and travel to china, and insert those local sim card, your phone will work? Last time I was in China, for 2 weeks duration, I bought a phone in china and bought their local sim card to use the phone locally, the total cost still cheaper than my Atnt roaming charge! Anybody has any idea about sim card in n900? Question: Do this spec implies n900 is using sim cards? ========================================== Frequency Bands GSM 1800 GSM 1900 GSM 850 GSM 900 WCDMA 1700 WCDMA 2100 WCDMA 900 Data Bearers Dual Transfer Mode (MSC 11) EDGE Class A GPRS Class A HSDPA[2] HSUPA[3] ================================================ TIA, bun |
Re: N900 utms?
As far as I know, China Unicom is only chinese network that uses W-CDMA 3G.

Re: N900 utms?
So, will the N900 support both WCDMA and TD-SCDMA?

Re: N900 utms?
I'm still caught up in this "does n900 use Sim cards" business....
My natural assumption for any mobile phone is that it uses sim cards.... Can anybody tell me of a mobile phone that doesn't? |

In what way does your post indicate that the N900 does not support TD-SCDMA? The link you sent me was dated 2007, and about some WinMo phone that China mobile is testing |
Re: N900 utms?
this link was only supposed to show you that there is no compatibility between w-cdma and td-scdma (otherwise china would not have the "general problem" mentioned.)
and since the n900 specs do not list td-scdma, only w-cdma, it won't work. td-scdma is a different technology, with different hardware. |
Re: N900 utms?
This is what I was looking for: http://www.tdscdma-forum.org/en/news...ime=2009-10-19.
Unless the N900 has a dual-mode FDD/TDD chipset, then it won't support TD-SCDMA. TD sounds promising. http://www.tdscdma-forum.org/en/pdfw...7463050335.pdf and with the majority of gloabl mobile subscribers in China.. this may be something Nokia will want to look into over the next few years. Luckily for me (and others) there is WCDMA access in China (Unicom)... it seems the largest problem regarding the N900 is actaully getting one over here ::thumbs:: |
