Great Iphone (3GS) parody [56k warning]

Sorry, but I really had to share this.

Quote:

There's only so little features left between iPhone and a smartphone:

SOFTWARE:

Web:
No multi-tab browsing
No text reflow
No real web experience, most sites identify it as a phone
No saving web pages for offline viewing (missing apps? buy them!)
No streaming audio/video support (missing apps? buy them!)
No Flash
Slow JavaScript interpreter
No disabling of JavaScript
No instant messaging (missing apps? buy them!)
No real push e-mail (it syncs from time to time draining a lot of power)
HTML attachment issues

File management:
No downloading content for offline playback except through iTunes
No accessing iPhone's folders by any means
No Flash or Java native application support
No DivX, XviD, FLV native video support (missing apps? buy them!)
No ZIP or RAR support (missing apps? buy them!)
No real office suite (missing apps? buy them!)
Clumsy searching for both files and in-text (missing apps? buy them!)

Connectivity:
No videocall
No VoIP support for Wi-Fi
No tethering support/must pay extra to the carrier
MMS shows the wrong sender number http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/14/i...r-number-poll/
A2DP (BT stereo) lags on videos (power-hungry cpu, useless!)
AVRCP Bluetooth Profile - only some headsets work
No supported services when pairing with MacBook
No BT file sharing (BT almost useless!)

Misc:
No TO-DO app (missing apps? buy them!)
No true multitasking support (power-hungry cpu, useless!)
No video recording above VGA (power-hungry cpu, useless!)
No apps developed for 3GS power-hungry HW, you might aswell use 3G (power-hungry cpu, useless!)
iTunes treats free applications like purchases + FairPlay DRM wrapping

HARDWARE:

Screen:
No precision at all on the touchscreen
No adjusting for parallax (finger/screen offset)
No feedback whatsoever
163 pixels per inch (decent monitors today have at least 200ppi & you're not holding them as close as a phone)
Small resolution (320x480), stretched too much (3.5"), sometimes looks pixelized
Dim in sunlight: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3171/...f404979442.jpg

Power:
Not enough (~1200MAX) mAh - smallest battery from it's cpu range/estimated value might be less
No full day coverage with one charge
No OS power optimization
No USB charging without adapter
No safety garment for the battery (swelling and cracking the screen from the inside reported) http://www.betanews.com/article/Appl...lem/1251474518
No warranty for the above

Connectivity:
No DLNA
No HSCSD
Slow HSDPA speed
Strong frequency interference - poor audio - poor GSM/GPS signal
Very high SAR value 1.4W/kg (above 1.6 subjects to risk of cancer)
Non-standard headset jack (although it looks like one)
Non-standard connectivity forces you to use overpriced accessories
No IR

Storage:
No Micro-SD slot
Not addressable as USB storage
256 SDRAM; why Intel? it's slow & they are far from other flash memory manufacturers.

Media/camera:
No stereo speakers /weak speakerphone and voicemail playback
No radio
No FM transmitter
No hi-res camera sensor (less DPI than other 3mp phones); focus distance limited; no exposure control
No ability to use 3RD party OCR on taken pictures
No front camera
No light sensor
No flash

Design:
No sim ejecting without special key
No removable battery (hard reset required if it gets stuck and you have to be a service engineer to reach the battery http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iPhone-3GS/817/2%29)
No typing on a table; it wobbles
No kick-stand/standing on it's own for timed/group photo
No hot swappable or expandable memory
Not built by apple themselves

As you can see iPhone is only missing some unnecessary features that only the haters would complain of!

Yes! Well done Apple! Well done Steve Jobs!

Buy iPhone, it's the best,
Be a sheep, just like the rest!

LOL, funny, ive had an iPhone for almost 3 years now...happily jailbroken...all these "disadvantages" must be why the iPhone is selling like nobody's business...

Good luck unlocking the limited hardware. Since the opening post is all about the Iphone's limitation, there's no point to mention them again. But I'll do it anyway.

Sorry about that, but this post was deleted from its original source...

Right now it's impossible to find the original post with the correct links, and unless someone wants to fix the links manually it'll have to be like this for a while. However, I'll hopefully edit it soon enough.

Say as you wish about the phones limitations...as if every phone is perfect...still doesn't explain the millions of sales...and still leaves it as one of the most successful products in the market...I'm not buying an N900 because of the iPhones limitations, I'm buying it because I want more than what the average user wants, and I can get that with open source software, I'm very satisfied with the iPhone and will definately keep it as a portable gaming platform...

Britney Spears and American Idol have huge numbers of fans as well. Some things defy explanation.

That said, the iPhone was really like nothing else when it was first introduced and for non-technically-discriminating users it is a great experience. Many people whom I know that have them are completely in love with them and the limitations noted are either unnoticed or, for the more discriminating ones, the device is still a net-positive experience despite the flaws/limitations.

What? Britney Spears didnt just get famous all of a sudden for no good reason...neither did American Idol or the iPhone series...

Regarding the iPhone, obviously the advantages over throw the "limitations" well enough to earn Apple 26.4 Million iPhone sales ever since 2007...last quarter alone they sold 5.2 Million devices, LOL, like those "limitations" mean anything for a device thats selling like nobody's business...

That's exactly my point. As a rule (meaning that there are occasional exceptions), popularity != merit.

iPhone is not the best phone. There is no such thing as the best phone. If I need 50€ phone for a holiday to a dangerous location, I would not get iPhone. It would not be the best. If I need something else, the best to my needs will be the best then. Eventho I love thrashing iphone just as much as the next guy, could we please stop using it as the mother of all phones? It is just a phone, even the name says so, even if you can browse the net with it. :)

While I'm in no way a supporter of the iCrap technosphere, quite the contrary, this is the most bulshitish line of plenty of them within this `missing features list`. You cannot get a cancer from non-ionizing radiation, period!

Re: Great Iphone (3GS) parody [56k warning]

I really don't understand all the hate towards the iPhone or any other device, I had the iPhone since day 1 all the way upto the 3GS and am now on the N900, but my iPhone was an excellent phone and still is, I loved watching movies on it and the occasional game.

Yes the iPhone has limitations, but who cares, thats how Apple designed it, they designed it to make money, and thats what happened.

I really like my N900, but I wouldnt class it as better than my old iPhone, different comes to mind, because 2 different devices, designed for 2 different markets.

But to the point at hand, all this blah blah moan moan about iPhone's compared to the N900 really makes this excellent site come across and a load of tosh, managed by tosh writers and populated by tosh members, for the love of all that is wrong with the world GROW UP, can we not keep this site and its forums full with useful advice and tips instead of this constant wah wah iPhones are ****, HTC's are ****, anything thats not Nokia is **** policy sweeping these discussions...

Laughingstok 2010-02-09 17:13

Re: Great Iphone (3GS) parody [56k warning]

I don't think anyone hates the iPhone, or iPhone users. I think what most people are attacking are the fanboys who, with glazed eyes, scream long and hard about the iPhones "advantages."

And you are right. They ARE two different markets.

Just like childrens books are for children, and science/mathematics books are for engineers.

People can argue until they're blue in the face, but no matter how many times you read a childrens book, change the font, rebind it or even put a shiney cover on it, it's still a book written for 5 year olds.

That, I think, is the point most people are trying to make. Anyone who just doesn't "get it" never will. Not until they bother taking a few CIT classes in college and really understanding information technology and many of the ground breaking possibilities with the N900. So yes, Apple is brilliant. They have marketed a childrens book to the masses, that, guess what, the masses love. But to try and argue that it is somehow superior. :D Laughable.

Hmmm... one could easily use the same argument on religion. No wonder that some people praise the iPhone as a `Jesus Phone` and consider Steve Jobs as the new Messiah :D

Thank you for clarifying the meme Apple uses to sell its products - they are using the technique that has been around for thousands of years. Sans the beheadings, of course.

Because it does a lot of things right! I like N900 but it is a half-baked device. Iphone 3GS works flawlessly with what it has. For me email is important, and N900 can not come close to iphone 3GS in terms of email.......I have to admit I have a factory unlocked iphone so not limited to ATT or itunes

you are such an iphone apologizer.

so your iphone can handle couple provisionings with mfe and n900 can handle none. so with full provisionings your iphone is as useless as n900.... so you've got plain luck.

iphone does the job it advertises. N900 advertised MfE. MfE for me means being able to connect to work email as with E71. Not so with N900, MfE different on this device and does not deliver. A lot of people's lifestyles these days mix work and pleasure, and N900 seems to be designed for teenagers in mind

It's not just provisioning - the mail client is way below the mark compared to the competition.
30-40s just to open the Exchange Inbox?
No IMAP IDLE?
Even my old E61 (not i) could beat that.
And if the N900 had even basic provisioning (i.e. password and remote wipe), perhaps this chap wouldn't be worrying so much about his personal data:

For you. Had you been paying attention, you'd have realized provisioning was impossible on the N900.

It's no different. It's completely compatible with Exchange. When the server asks what kind of provisioning it supports, it properly answers "none." Had you put two and two together before buying the N900, you'd have realized that just might be the case.

Not that I'd use my device on a corporate exchange server that required it. Nothing quite like giving your employer carte blanche to wipe your device remotely.

It can't even legitimately claim to support that much, since I could go and alter the client to lie to the server regarding it.

gruber,
still hanging around? :D

there must be something really exciting in this forum for you.
Your device sucks (according to you)
It's in the box (according to you)
mfe does not work for you (that sucks)
your browser crashes frequently (mine doesn't)

why do you still care? come back when mfe works for your version of exchange. - good bye

Put two and two together......hmmmmmm........and where was I supposed to read that it does not provide provisioning?

By the way: I have factory unlocked iphone, so no issues there

It absolutely astounds me that you can continue to type such a thing and yet remain completely unaware of the full implications. Of your own words.

Maybe you're using a ghostwriter?

By reading the documentation and discussion around the device before buying. If you'd rubbed some brain cells together you might have come to the conclusion that a device that gives total control of the device and its OS to the user just might not be able to claim to a server that it can wipe itself.

What did you do, buy the phone THEN find this site? Do you normally spend $600+ on devices and follow up finding out what it is capable of?

And enjoy your iPhone. It may be unlocked but you still have to jailbreak it. Of course, if you think the iPhone is in any way equal or superior to the N900, you should never have bought an N900 in the first place. Enjoy your toy because, comparatively speaking, that's what it is.
