A plea to lcuk
Gary
I was watching your video http://maemotalk.com/2009/10/20/liqb...e-lcuk-appeal/ I suddenly realized that your application is getting too clever and you may never finish. You only need to release a single small app that does the drawing wall. Get that onto the OVI store and start making some money man. Then get the torch out Then get the Calendar out assuming Nokia sell 500K N900's in the next year, and you get 10% downloads for each app at a pound each, we would all have you available here in the community instead of doing some corporate crap. Mike C |
Re: A plea to lcuk
I'd go for that - though I'd say get the torch out now - I think it's already more or less finished.

Re: A plea to lcuk
le coq, i love you!
(sorry i had to ;)) |
Re: A plea to lcuk
you are right,
this is the part I talk about "coaxing these hacks into the general community" theres a couple of gotchas, things dont quite integrate properly as it stands and need workarounds it doesn't composite and needs some way to make x11 pixmap of the current liqbase XV screen when its minimized (otherwise it looks crap) if i leave XV running, then I cannot run more than 1 standalone app at a time - because XV is limited to only 2 and media player/camera use them. I considered solutions and broached the subject of using liqbase in a desktop widget (storing the most recent screen as a screenshot, and showing that in the widget). theres an annoying flash when you open stand alone apps (I left a bug report, thats low level xv initialization) my head is still blown up by packaging things ( I have a template for new stuff but i cant change it) im only doing what i can :S i dont know much about any of this stuff and cant just ask for people to do stuff, i can leave questions and messages around and hope people participate but then because the things I have problems with are obscure nothing gets cured. so i work where i can and where i feel comfortable which is been making my code work well. i am used to having people with me who i can direct (or if they are busy do it myself) and still don't quite get distributed development, I am too impulsive and would rather be coding than twiddling my thumbs pondering if someone will work on something. i am used to writing a big list of things todo on a whiteboard or page and having everyone work through them. so, status as of right now:
todo as of right now for "user ready"
whos good at planning that i can talk to and sort out a proper checklist to get some things done? |
Re: A plea to lcuk
You need a business-oriented partner to handle the support and other engagements. ;)

I would have thought that you could get a 90% download on the Torch given how small and light it is. "Faster than paper" yeah!! Mike C |

Re: A plea to lcuk
mmm 770
could i get it on all Nokia maemo devices, the only time its been tried it was never pushed hard. would be good to know if its impossible, or tweakable. tho, the 770 has its own White Screen torch application built in |
Re: A plea to lcuk
installed liqtorch right now.
could not be started via icon. had to cd /usr/bin ./liqtorch-run.sh on n8x0 it's only white, isn't it? |

My 770 did the WSOD after about a year. I bought it in Chicago. I had it shipped back to my brother in the US who took it down to the Nokia Flag ship store and they gave him a new one. I bought a N800 while I was waiting, so the n770 is brand new, and has no torch yet. Mike C |
Re: A plea to lcuk

with just 2 buttons ill push the new ones through tonight linked to the lib thats just gone up though the shortcut should just work :s if you find out why, please let me know how ill check it against the one here |

Re: A plea to lcuk
Get the torch and the postcards onto the main maemo site asap - both of those are the sort of 'fun andf froth' stuff that will sell quickly and easily to people who like shiney toys. Are you planning to price them? If so, what rate? Those sorts of things need decided. You need a 'business partner'.
|
Re: A plea to lcuk
Hmm, I don't see torch as 'fun', I see it was 'useful', and its a popular feature S60 users install from ISV. Part of the swiss army knife, so to say.
However... I tend to use the camera's flashlight by shooting pictures when I'm searching something in the dark  which brought me to following idea: is it possible that, instead of torch, to use the LED light of the back camera for light? Then you can still use your screen for something else while torching, or rather: flashlighting. I'm not sure which one is kinder to the battery though. |
Re: A plea to lcuk
noooooooooo
dont distract lcuk until he gets those apps up. Mike C |

test it, tell me if it works properly i'm sure there is still bugs and implementation issues though. i use happily every day from my playground and have done from the day I made it. |
Re: A plea to lcuk
:D
*Wants to see that on the apps site before 16th Nov* ;) |
Re: A plea to lcuk
i've gotta find a job so i can afford to last however long is needed to consider earning my shillings from this mythical app store!
i spent a lot of today doing various jobby business related things. spoke with a couple of companies about prospective postings and stuff :) i made a standalone simple version of liqflow lastnight and pushed that as well (thats available for n810 too!) and was meant to "just work", but has a tiny issue with icon on n900 that i noticed, does it work from n810? thats minor fixable but needs to be fixed at the template stage, which was where I realised its wrong.. I pushed the working libraries and torch into testing yesterday - postcard is gonna be delayed because the liqbase.net website is crap and people will want more. (anyone know how to design php websites) kotczarny and I spoke today and started hashing out the x11 pixmap issue and have a few bits of example code now and things to test and try in the v near future. i also handled a very large impressive email someone sent which included lots of large UI upgrades to calendar (hopefully more of the community will get involved instead of it being a private conversation) I made a thread about it: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...494#post355494 i didnt realise i had done that much, oh i also found time to mess around in irc for a bit ;) |
Re: A plea to lcuk
Just to be completely clear amongst all of the talk of app stores, it looks to me that the new liqbase packages are still licensed under the GPL. Is that impression correct?
|
Re: A plea to lcuk
yes
gpl v2 with option later of v3 i believe it still says |

Good luck with the job-hunting! Hope your portfolio of liqbase stuff stands you in good stead for a nice earner. :)

Re: A plea to lcuk
Question for lcuk - i saw the calendar app on youtube and in recaps of presentations you did and it looks fantastic, particularly the whole "becoming the new fridge door" and sharing it with other people.... just interested if the sharing element is up and running as that is something a lot of people would find useufl.
If i could share the calendar with family so we know when appointments are and who's getting what from the shops that is a great feature that would be used day ini day out and i'd happily pay for Sorry if this is seen as a "hijack of thread" |
Re: A plea to lcuk
njoughin,
its not quite a hijack, a lot of people have expressed a great amount of interest in my simple understandable calendar :) its just an idea i have had for a while and I am trying to work out how to make it happen - I want a wall mounted liqbase display which keeps up with what I and other family members are doing. I am well beyond my happy visual basic comfort zone, but think its the right thing to do! this thread was started and is right, liqbase has grown beyond what I can personally code in a reasonable time. its a bit of a catch 22 - I only have one pair of hands and I cannot yet afford to pay people to plan and code up specific things. /me needs to find corporate sponsorship and build a team :) I would love to do get everything completely ready and do even more though, theres a lot of ideas coming from many sources. post follow on ideas about the calendar specifically into the "liqbase calendaring ideas" thread http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...494#post355494 |
