Second Life Client on the N900
Second Life is open source so I know *if* it's possible, we could do it. The only question here is: Is it possible?
SL uses OpenGL 2.0 and I'm not sure how that translates to OpenGL ES 2.0. Obviously the client would need some major redesigns as the graphics are made for more powerful machines and the interface is designed for a desktop and a mouse. I already know how it can work to control it, and I could pretty easily whip up a shiny looking interface in PS, but I can't code it and so far don't even know if it could run on here. So before I start asking for people who can code such an awesome feat, I'd like to know if it's even a possibility. So does anyone know if the SL client is compatible with OpenGL ES 2.0 coming from OpenGL 2.0? Does anyone know if the N900 can finally bring SL to the mobile realm? :D |

is the second life client open source?

Re: Second Life Client on the N900
The client is open source. http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Get_source_and_compile
Not sure how this would work on such a small screen though.. |

Re: Second Life Client on the N900
A possible option could be the realXtend client. Their previous client was based on the Second Life client so you could log into Second Life too. I think they are currently developing a new client with Qt but I'm not sure if you can use with Second Life. There's some info here.
I think there was some talk about a mobile client for realXtend at some point not sure though. |

Of course before I talk to them I want to know it won't be a waste of their time to have to investigate whether the platform is capable. I want a definite "Yes it will work with some retooling." or at least a "Yeah from what I've done with it, it should be capable." Hopefully one of those two answers will find it's self ITT soon. :) |
Re: Second Life Client on the N900
they still havnt renamed it to "first life"?

Re: Second Life Client on the N900
Seriously... even if it was just a text client... it would be awesome to have. I started to install all the stuff for the SDK and whatnot... and then I realized I didn't know what the heck I was doing and was like... Ummmm... >.>

Re: Second Life Client on the N900
i played sl via vollee on my n95 so it should definetly be do able with n900

Re: Second Life Client on the N900
Something like Vollee(streaming a full version of the client from a server over 3G) would be possible, but a lot less likely then if we can actually run sl *on* the N900 which does seem do-able, but it would need to be heavily modified to support the N900 better.
In Vollee's case we'd need a company with access to fast internet and lots of servers capable of running sl and down-resing it for the phone.. That seems kinda unlikely to happen again, at least it does to me. |
Re: Second Life Client on the N900
Was interesting to hear such a thing as Vollee had even existed, that was news to me. Too bad they never got the WoW-support out before folding. :P
How well did it work with Second Life? Quote:

As for OnLive, whatever happened to that promise of coming soon in winter 2009? ;) |

Re: Second Life Client on the N900
If still interested you might want to check http://slxslchat.slx.cc/
This guy's written a client that allows in-world chat via a text interface and done it in two parts, a transport that does the communication and a front-end user interface. I am guessing it's not too difficult to get the transport running on the N900 so this then becomes a nice little project in creating a UI. Also, it seems the transport doesn't have to be on the same machine as the UI, so if you have a server on the Net somewhere you could run the transport on that and keep the N900 component nice and light. Could be a good fast way to get a sparkle-style app running on the Nokia. |
Re: Second Life Client on the N900
search Youtube for "N900 Naali" (no quotes), not avaible to the public yet but seems promising

Re: Second Life Client on the N900
btw, for a text only client, you can try http://textsl.org , it's made for the visually impaired but if you can see you can use it too. It works kinda like a MU*

Re: Second Life Client on the N900
I saw this on the TV show The Office and I didn't actually think it was real... but I would love to have it on my N900.:p
