Fosdem 2010
What is the Maemo community up to for FOSDEM 2010 (Brussels, 6-7/feb)
The time to organize the basics is right now. http://wiki.maemo.org/FOSDEM_2010 |
Re: Fosdem 2010
Thinking of it maemo.org really brings many communities together. This matches very well with the new ideas of FOSDEM to increase cross project interaction.
Apparently we fit in all categories I see here and we should definitely be omnipresent at this great event http://www.fosdem.org/2010/ The call for maemo developer for the schedule app is also a great opportunity to showcase the many aspects of maemo. http://www.fosdem.org/2010/news/andr...elopers-wanted In the qgil's link above you can state your interest please do so. |
Re: Fosdem 2010
There is some grumbling in the debian community about the change from dev rooms to distro rooms, and I agree. The dev rooms were crowded, but you could have talks in them which is what they were used for. Now one doesn't know the layout or acoustics of the distro rooms but I doubt we'll have the same opportunity for maemo only talks, or we'll have to take turns in the various distros talking, which might not be so great.
Hopefully FOSDEM will provide us with both the older dev rooms and the newer distro rooms so that we can have dedicated tracks, be they debian, maemo, or whatever. |
Re: Fosdem 2010
8 people at http://wiki.maemo.org/FOSDEM_2010#Attendees
Cool! We need more to reach critical mass though. |
Re: Fosdem 2010
Can someone not busy with the Maemo-Marcelona Long Weekend push this forward? I don't have more mental RAM available and it would be a pity to miss important deadlines because of this.

I can't compromise with the organization right now, because I don't know if I'll be able to attend. I hope to start my professional activity outside University around that date and don't know where yet :). Anyway I'll try to find a voluntary to coordinate this initiative ;). |

Re: Fosdem 2010
Great! Tomorrow I will put things in sync with you and the organizers.
|
Re: Fosdem 2010
Let's do it differently. Given the current people interested and what you think we can grow in terms of interest, what do you propose to do in FOSDEM?
|
Re: Fosdem 2010
I'm also willing to help in any way I can.

Re: Fosdem 2010
How about a DevRoom? A room where we organise a stream of talks on Maemo, the N900 and the Maemo Community. How about we do what GNOME have done in the past, and share a half day with Debian? So we would have some talks specifically about Debian derivatives, including Maemo. And why not share the FDO room for a half day too, if they are having one again this year?
So Maemo activity would roughly be: 1 day Maemo-specific content .5 day engaged with fd.o/GNOME/KDE .5 day engaged with Debian |

Re: Fosdem 2010
Any movement on FOSDEM planning?
Their deadline is on the 22nd of November - it would be a shame to not be represented in some way. I'm willing to help out, but might not have internet access this weekend as I'll be on the road.... |
Re: Fosdem 2010
I've been waiting for Quim to respond to my offer to get in contact with FOSDEM organisers and the suggestions I had for participation.
There is an alternative: don't take a dedicated hack-room, but participate actively & ensure that there are Maemo related sessions in the Debian, GNOME and KDE hackrooms. Quim, can you update on whether you still want me to take over co-ordination of this? Dave. |
Re: Fosdem 2010
Dave connected to FOSDEM organizers and also to the Mozilla team since were discussing about the possibility to collaborate in some sessions around Firefox Mobile.
Stand yes/no? I can help putting some hours there. We can also fund some merchandising for the occasion. |
Re: Fosdem 2010
I'd say yes to stand. We need a volunteer co-ordinator to ensure the stand is manned all the time by a couple of people, and knowing myself at conferences, I would not be a good guy - I'm rarely on stands :}
Cheers, Dave. |
Re: Fosdem 2010
I'd gladly do it. :D
|
Re: Fosdem 2010
On the other hand I end up chatting with people a lot next to stands, so I can choose to chat in our stand. As long as I can scape to some sessions...

Re: Fosdem 2010
Hi,
Just received the call for papers for the mobile track - the deadline is 5/1: CALL FOR PAPERS for the 8th EMBEDDED and MOBILE track at FOSDEM 2010 ================================================== ======= sat 6 - sun 7 February 2010, Brussels Call for papers ---------------- The 2010 edition of FOSDEM (Free and Open Source Developers' European Meeting; http://www.fosdem.org) will take place in Brussels, Belgium on 6 and 7 February 2008. For the sixth time, a track on Embedded Systems and Operating Systems will be organized. The fourth edition was quite succesful and attracted up to 150 attendants for certain topics. For last year's program see: http://archive.fosdem.org/2009/schedule/tracks/embedded The use of Free Software in the infrastructure of Embedded Systems is booming, e.g. by the use of Linux, uClinux, eCos, RedBoot, RTEMS and many other Free Software components. More companies are supporting Embedded Free Software every day because of the reliability and cheap licensing. This can be confirmed from looking at some high profile releases of embedded GNU/Linux systems. Some examples are the Nokia N900, Archos media players, TomTom navigation system, the numerous SOHO routers and NAS devices based on linux. Let's not forget Samsungs Bada plans or Googles Android. Operating System development has always been a very important topic in Free Software. As embeddedi, mobile and real-time systems typically have special OS requirements, we organise this embedded and mobile track at FOSDEM to give people the opportunity to present their (or their teams) achievements. This track at FOSDEM provides a remarkable opportunity to present and discuss the ongoing work in these areas, and we invite developers to present their current projects. Technical topics of the conference include but are not limited to : * OS Development : kernel architecture and implementation, libraries, power management, TIPC, boot time and memory usage optimizations (e.g. Linux, BSD, uClinux, uClibc, newlib, slob allocator,...) * Practical experiences in implementing Free Software in embedded systems (e.g. consumer electronics, NAS devices, routers, gateways, ... ) * Toolchain, performance testing and build environment (e.g. crosstool, emdebian, openembedded, PTX dist, packaging, scratchbox, Eclipse, Valgrind,...) * GUIs for embedded systems (Gtk, Qt-(embedded), GPE, Qtopia, UI design with touchscreen, Hildon GUI extensions, OpenMoko, OpenGL ES, Maemo...) * Multimedia applications for embedded systems (e.g. integer only decoders, gstreamer, interfacing with hardware media accelerators... ) * Real-time extensions, nanokernels and hardware virtualization software (e.g. RTAI, Adeos, KURT, L4, Qemu, User Mode Linux, VirtualLogix, high resolution timers, ...) * Hard real-time OS's (eCos, RTEMS, Real Time Linux,...) * Open hardware, DSP, softcores and general hardware management (e.g opencores.org, OpenRISC, leonSparc, FPGA's, specific design restrictions for free systems, DSP, Power management...) * Safety and security certifications applied to Free software (e.g. security measures in Embedded systems, TPM, SELinux for embedded, TrustZone, ...) * Tools and techniques for programming multicore systems * Free software licenses and embedded systems Authors that wish to present a topic are requested to submit their abstracts online to embedded_at_fosdem.org before 05/01/2010. Notification of receipt will be sent within 48 hours. Authors wishing to submit a full paper (between 6 and 12 A4 pages), can do so in PS or PDF format. The Program Committee will evaluate the abstracts and consists of: * Geert Uytterhoeven, Sony NSCE, Belgium * Peter De Schrijver (p2), Nokia (Maemo software), Finland * Philippe De Swert, Nokia (Maemo software), Finland * Klaas van Gend, MontaVista Software, The Netherlands * Michael Opdenacker, Free Electrons, France |
Re: Fosdem 2010
Attila77 and I will be working on a whitepaper covering improved feedback, testing and bug reporting infrastructure... not sure if I see a place for it in that agenda though. But I will of course keep everyone updated on what we develop.
EDIT: for the time being I am calling this a "user experience API", to include app testing, bug reporting and app feedback/suggestions/rating. EDIT 2: Brainstorm on the subject here-- http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=38014 |
Re: Fosdem 2010
The Maemo FOSDEM app is now available, just in the nick of time. Fremantle-only sadly.

Re: Fosdem 2010
Is this just a specific-purpose schedule application? To be uninstalled after FOSDEM? I couldn't find a detailed description.
