Exult on N900? (Ultima 7)

Hi!

I know there is a port for Nokia 770/800, but would it work with n900? At least I think it would be easy to port for n900?

I think there are lot of ultima fans craving for this :)

Re: Exult on N900?

I think the most popular games for earlier Maemo versions will be ported to Maemo 5 after the release of the N900. Until then you'll either have to try to run the older versions (if they work, because some does, some doesn't) or you'll just have to be patient, as the majority doesn't even have the device already (if you don't have it either, then you don't have to worry about anything... yet).

Sounds good! I have pre-ordered my N900, so I have to wait patiently anyway...

Thank you for your answer!

I downloaded the source from http://exult.sourceforge.net/ and I tried to setup the SDK environment but the thing is that I'm not that familiar with the Maemo SDK / sandbox 2 environment.
If anyone that has already worked with compiling stuff for maemo can give try, it woudl be great. I don't think it should be too difficult given that it hardly has any GUI to adapt from the desktop version and it would be worthwhile to have a decent RPG game for the platform.
If no one does, I'll try to work on it next week if I find the time...

THIS WILL PROBABLY NOT WORK (may ruin your phone, yada yada...)! but I compiled a version, I just don't have ultima or know how to setup the configuration file properly so can't really test it. I had to cleanup the code in a bunch of places to make it compile in gcc 4.
Also no .desktop so you will have to run it from the terminal for now.
If it works, tell me and I might finish cleaning it up and packing it.

Try it from:

Re: Exult on N900?

pupnik already did this, the 7x0 version works on the N900 but you need to create a game to load first on the pc. Also the hard keyboard doesn't work so you'll need to use a soft keyboard for X for input. Dont' even know if it works, but maybe if we all beg pupnik, he'll revisit this for the 900! Ultima 7 is THE best RPG of all time :). Maybe thats a slight exageration, but its the first must have port I grabbed for my Zaurus SL-C3000 almost half a decade ago.

Re: Exult on N900?

Why not try DosBox and run the real ultima ?

shinkamui 2010-02-22 06:41

Re: Exult on N900?

have you tried any 386 games in dosbox? N900 build still wont run games designed for anything faster than an 8086 at full speed. Additionally there is the mouse cursor issue. No part of that plan really sounds desirable. finally, Exult has many feature enhancements that make it better than the original ultima 7 game engine.

Re: Exult on N900?

Has anyone made any further progress getting exult running nicely on the N900? I would love to play through serpent isle again! Looking at the old conversation above it seems like it is already half way there...just need somebody with the knowhow to tie everything together for the N900.

Re: Exult on N900?

I'm giving it a quick go. Currently Black gate works good, Serpent Isle segfaults for some reason. Will get it in extras afterwards.

Re: Exult on N900?

Thank you so much! Can't wait to see how it's progressing. If I can get serpent isle on my N900 I'll gladly donate some money for your hard work.

I've been waiting for this for a while too. If I ever get around to updating my scratchbox for 1.2 I might be able to assist.

Re: Exult on N900?

I had to disable the Serpent Isle opening cinematic, hope noone misses it. The rest works.

Re: Exult on N900?

Awesome! When can we expect it in extras-devel? :)

Bundyo 2010-07-06 22:31

Re: Exult on N900?

Soon - the only things left I think are the additional package for the digital music and sound fx and to check if it is going to install on a clean device :)

But first some sleep.

Re: Exult on N900?

Exult, Exult Studio and Exult Digital Audio are in extras-devel. Didn't test the packages yet, though they are optified.
Exult Studio isn't tested at all since I don't know what it does (it wasn't supposed to be visible in App Manager too).

Let me know if they work or not.

Re: Exult on N900?

Nah, the default .exult.cfg is wrong for some reason. Use this one, place it in your /home/user/:

http://bundyo.org/maemo/.exult.cfg

The rest seems to be working (with or without the digital audio package). Interestingly though the double click to move feature is not (even though it did with the package from my scratchbox, I will check that too).

EDIT: Press H in game for key help. Serpent Isle has some more keys though. You can also walk diagonally with Shift+arrows.

Re: Exult on N900?

Will test this later :D. Tried the Black Gate yesterday with DosBox. Its rather slow, but playable (if you can live without a right click of your "mouse" for movement) and sound is not working properly.
So this could be AWESOME.

Re: Exult on N900?

Nice one, Bundyo! I'll test serpent isle when I get home tonight.

Re: Exult on N900?

Cant make it work. Says it cant find datafiles. Dont know if I downloaded right stuff. Can someone give me link for proper download.

whaleyboy 2010-07-07 15:31

Re: Exult on N900?

You'll need the original data files from the games.

Re: Exult on N900?

Got it working. Wrong path. Looks great. Thank you.

Bundyo 2010-07-07 15:49

Re: Exult on N900?

And the linked .exult.cfg file on the previous page, because the default one in the package doesn't work yet.

Re: Exult on N900?

Well Serpent Isle is working a treat! Great work, thanks! The only issue I see is the double-click problem you mentioned above and the lack of a right click to move about with the mouse cursor. Would it be possible to assign the right mouse button to a key (Ctrl or function key would work well)?

Bundyo 2010-07-07 19:09

Re: Exult on N900?

It's probably possible, the double click was on the right button as well.

park 2010-07-07 22:06

Re: Exult on N900?

Black Gate with Forge of Virtue and Serpent Isle both run great. I had to change midi to GS for music and speech.

I canīt import older non-exult savegames, right? They donīt load. Exult just exists. Seems I have to start over. We just need a right click on doubleclick and all is fine. I will play around and report later. Thanks a lot!

Re: Exult on N900?

Updated, now allows walk with click and double click.
