[Under consideration] Maps integration
This comes from an idea I posted over at my-symbian on the evolution of Maps on the Communicator. Given the open-source nature of Maemo, it may spark some developer interest here.
When you schedule an appointment, you should get a location field with the option to select either a Maps favourite or address from Contacts; if there's more than one address for the contact you should get prompted home/business/whatever address. When setting the alarm for the appointment, you would be asked if you want directions (driving or walking) to the location; if yes, Maps fires up automagically at the alarm time and off you go. If it were really swish it would work out where you are, how long you need to get to your appointment's location, add a suitable (user-defined) factor of safety and prompt you at the point you need to get going. All of the information is already on the device, but it's not very joined up. Moderator edit: http://maemo.org/community/brainstor...r_integration/ (Brainstorm url) |
Re: Maps integration
Sounds like this is *basically* covered by https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2962 ? Feel free to vote for that report.
For broader ideas also feel free to post a problem in http://maemo.org/community/brainstorm/ and provide the solutions that you have in mind. |
Re: Maps integration
The bug seems to be part of what I'm suggesting, so I've posted to Brainstorm here. I hope it's not too presumptious to do that on my first day on the forum...

Re: Maps integration
Cool! Thanks for your contribution.

Re: Maps integration
Is it possible to change the title of a thread to add Brainstorm: now that this has moved from the sandbox to Under consideration?

Re: Brainstorm: Maps integration
I love John's new suggestion on this one; it's exactly the level of integration I was thinking of.

[Under consideration] Maps/Contacts/Calendar Integration
This is the discussion thread of the Brainstorm proposal Maps/Contacts/Calendar Integration
Note that this proposal came after contacts integration in calendar and they are quite overlapping. |
Re: [Under consideration] Maps/Contacts/Calendar Integration
Just a little note to both bump this suggestion to people's notice and to point out there's already a thread on this with the less full name Maps Integration but a bit more discussion, which this could probably do with merging with...

Re: [Under consideration] Maps/Contacts/Calendar Integration
What is the URL of the thread to merge?
|
Re: [Under consideration] Maps/Contacts/Calendar Integration
I have not yet found the thread. Will continue looking later.
But yes, the 2 map/contact items on the actual Brainstorm page are essentially identical. No idea how to resolve that. EDIT: nevermind, I merged the threads. That solved the first issue. |
Re: [Under consideration] Maps/Contacts/Calendar Integration
The problem is that the proposals are so wide that they do overlap but not overlap at the same time. In next occasions let's try being more precise.
Anyway, I have set the Harmattan target to http://maemo.org/community/brainstor...r_integration/ since there are no current plans in that direction for Fremantle. Maybe a developer can propose solutions of their own? |
Re: [Under consideration] Maps/Contacts/Calendar Integration
I don't know whether it is possible to move solutions to other proposals or how to do it. I will ask.
In the meantime, a like at http://maemo.org/community/brainstor...n_in_calendar/ points to this thread as well now. Harmattan target set since we don't have current plans for Fremantle. Maybe a developer wants to add solutions of their own? |
Contacts adresses linked to maps
I would like to have a function to click on the contacts adresses and maps automatically opens with two possibilities: either create a route to this adress or just show the adress on the map.
That would be a very nice feature. Does somebody know about such features? Is such a feature present perhaps in other environments? thx, uncle.sam edit: I´m using N900 since friday, the 4th. |
Re: Contacts adresses linked to maps
What a good idea. I want that, too.

Re: Contacts adresses linked to maps
I just discovered that the maps application on iPhone has just this feature I want on my N900.

Re: Contacts adresses linked to maps
Casting my vote for this feature too.

Re: Contacts adresses linked to maps
Threads merged.

For completeness, there's also enhancement request 2962 in Bugzilla. |

Re: [Under consideration] Maps/Contacts/Calendar Integration
i have my contacts. what could i want to do with them?
1) schedule a meeting in the calendar with them 2) schedule a task in tasks for them 3) drive to their location 4) email them 5) call them 6) sms them so i should be able to, in calendar, say ok, i want a meeting - i can then type it in ad hoc or select from contacts. if i select from contacts, auto full in the details of who the meeting is with and where it is. i should also be able to - from either contacts or calendar- say "drive to this location" and have it open up maps and do it. (this is when the maps gets turn by turn eventually...) i should be able to look at the appointment or task in the calendar and be able to open the contact (and the full contact, not some mickey mouse only show phone number or some such nonsense as happens currently with the call log) - its simple, just pass the id of the contact to the existing contact management app. (why do people make new interfaces that arent as good as ones that are already there??) |
Re: [Under consideration] Maps/Contacts/Calendar Integration
I don't like the idea of stuff popping up asking me to launch programs. I have enough problems with the N900 constantly being at the limit of its capacity and stuff slowing down.
If I don't know how to get somewhere, I will open the Maps app and find out. But only once I'm already going. I'd rather have everything moving at my pace instead of me having to estimate days in advance how soon before the event I need instructions to get there. My only wish is, that you could add street addresses to contacts and see the contacts marked on Maps automatically. |
