Stantum Display on N900
I heard some voices (rumors) about stantum new displays technology (resistive, multitouch, pressure sensitive) on N900.
I sent an email to Stantum Company asking confirm about that (3weeks ago) without reply till now! Someone can confirm/refute with certainty? Thank you |
Re: Stantum Display on N900
effettui una certa ricerca sul Internet. il n900 non è multitouch.
do some research on the internet. N900 is not multitouch. |
Re: Stantum Display on N900
@r0eladn: depends of hardware. If it's confirmed that N900 uses Stantum's display, it will need just a specific software to activate the multitouch/pressure_sensible functions (like FM radio receiver).

Re: Stantum Display on N900
Just saw some videos about Stantum's multi touch technology on resistiv touch screens on youtube.
It would be really cool if nokia implemented this software to make the N900 multi touch. The only disadvantage with the N900 today is that it lack support for multi touch imo. So I would be really appreciate it. |

for this reason I'm interested to know if N900 has this display. It's possible nobody opened an N900 to see HW and display type? |

Re: Stantum Display on N900
the only use for multitouch on a small screen that i can see is with onscreen keyboards...

Re: Stantum Display on N900
I think using Stantum makes since if you consider maemo 6 has multitouch support. If the N900 is a pre general consumer device for Nokia (4 of 5), then it follows that you would try some technologies out on it prior to the general consumer release device using maemo 6.

Re: Stantum Display on N900
I don't think you guys understand how development works. This close to release is way way to late to change hardware in a device.
|
Re: Stantum Display on N900
I'm sorry, but where have you heard that the n900 would have a stantum touch panel? although I would appreciate that very much, i really doubt it and iirc there are no devices with such a screen yet. well, this could of course change when the n900 gets one, but for now, I'd like to know where you got that information. As far as I know, the n900 doesn't have such a panel. However, I could be wrong there too and I sure hope it ;)

Re: Stantum Display on N900
If you read the first post again you will notice that it was a question. not a statment. And no we are not saying that they've changed the hardware, in that case just not impelmented the software for multi touch.

I don't think anyone thinks the delay is caused by a late hardware change because that just doesn't happen. |
Re: Stantum Display on N900
Has it occurred to you that if the n900 really did have this new and exciting thing, it would be way high up on the feature list? I would be really worried if it turned out nokia didn't think of advertising this - it would mean it's run by *****s.
Also, iirc the delay was said to be somehow feedback-related. I know marketing can't really be trusted, but i doubt they would lie outright about this, and i also doubt the feedback was panning the lack of a new and as yet unseen technology |

2) if present, it will be implemented with maemo 6, not now. It's a bad think in marketing to say: you have also a last technological display resistive multitouch, sensitive finger press but you have to wait about 1 year and more to use it because the software (maemo 6) isn't ready yet!(not before the end of 2010) convinced? ;) |

Re: Stantum Display on N900
does multitouch need specific hardware to run it in mobile or it just depends on software only ??

Re: Stantum Display on N900
I guess it's true nokia did leave some features in the dark in the past. It's a weird decision i don't understand. It's exactly the opposite of the flashy iphone promotion crusade, and maybe it's part of the reason nokia is not the maker of the phone everyone compares/benchmarks against.
Anyways, resistive multi-touch is not just some regular spec, which might as well not be there, such as fm radio. It's HUGE! It's something utterly new, which may have the opportunity to turn capacitive screens intro obsolete trash. Think about it, if you were a nokia big-wig, what would you have the developer drones do: facebook app or something innovative with the potential to make the device stand out even more? Don't get me wrong, i do hope it has this easter egg inside and we get a nice impressive present somewhere down the road. It's just that i've seen so many pieces of crap ultra-hyped into shining, it's hard for me to believe they'd leave such a gem in the mud (damn, i'm poetical!) |
Re: Stantum Display on N900
I really hope Nokia put in Stantum's technology in their N900. Even though N900's resistive touch screen is good enough for a lot of users, multitouch capabilities just open up more application possibilities to developers.

Re: Stantum Display on N900
Lol well i guess it's clear that we want stantum multitouch! Don't think they'd slap it in at the last moment like is being suggested speculated about here but if they did do that it would pretty much kick everything elses butt.

This forum has been a SUPERB showcase of superstition, faith and mysticism in past few weeks.
People have generated chatters among themselves to fabricate new ideas, creating buzz and frenzy among themselves to heighten their own faith of it and scorning 'the gods above' when they realize their self made beliefs did not pan out as the prophecies they've made themselves. Please go on :) |

Re: Stantum Display on N900
I didn't think that simply to ASK confirm about some voices (just to prove its true or not!!) is "a SUPERB showcase of superstition, faith and mysticism in past few weeks. "
These voices are possible: Stantum is partnership with Nokia as display productor, Stantum produces new revolutionary resistive technological displays, sometimes not all hw is present on technical sheet of devices. For someone (like me) it's important to know what kind of display is present on N900, so...where is your problem? We don't talking about flying green pinky-dot donkeys... So ysss, please, reply to my answer if you can, otherwise don't go OT! Thank you |
Re: Stantum Display on N900
Stantum will display at the Symbian Exchange and Exposition
http://www.stantum.com/en/medias/latest-news?id=41 http://www.see2009.org/ Why doesn't someone ask them if there are any phones coming out with their touchscreen. |
Re: Stantum Display on N900
maybe send a mail to nokia asking about multitouch in n900 to get some answers
|
Re: Stantum Display on N900
There's NO stantum display.
Why do you think there might be one? Hope the N900 + 1 has one, which I already doubt. |

Nokia: Hey, check out our new phone! It does all this cool stuff... Apple: ...well, I can totally rotate my screen when you turn me. Amazing! Nokia: ...oh wait, so can we. ENABLE! (...eventually...) Perhaps (not wanting to fan the flames of mysticism) a good ol' teardown is in order? P.s, at SEE (see AAS's walkaround vid) the Stantum rep held up a touchscreen that was being used by 'one of its partners' - and the thing looked a lot like a production model to me. If anyone can get a close enough look at it, perhaps it could be used for reference? |
Re: Stantum Display on N900
There is no multitouch for the N900. (This shouldn't come as a surprise to anybody.)
For Stantum, I'm sure it is very fine technology, but there is a big difference between having working evaluation kits for your technology and between being able to deliver millions of touch panels in a low-total-cost package to some company. Do you know of any mass-volume product right now that would be using their display technology? |
Re: Stantum Display on N900

Further, Stantum at SEE demonstrated an implementation of their tech by a licencee (sorry I have rewatched the vid now to refresh on the terminology) in a panel that looked like a production panel, before going on to demonstrate an evaluation kit. see from 6:40 here: (http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/news/...m_SEE_2009.php - also, check the size of the thing in his hand...) While I would not be surprised to see that there is no multitouch for the n900, I also think that there are a few facts that seem to line up nicely, and it is a cool thought to have. Nokia has put cool HW features to use only with significantly later firmware revisions, so the lack of implementation in Maemo5 of Multitouch in my mind isn't a 100% killer of this idea (maybe like 95%). Further, isn't that just the linux way?? (cf xkcd: http://xkcd.com/644/) Anyway - what else are we supposed to do while we wait for the device? talk about it *without* superstition, faith and mysticism?? pfft, that's BORING.. |
