40 app for downloading @ maemo5

Well, since nokia didn’t drop the N900 in the stores, my passing time hobby is to count the app for Maemo 5. A question from the older maemo.org people:
After the release of the N900, it’s expectable to achieve the numbers of OS 2008 (490) in weeks, months or in years???

attila77 2009-10-31 13:51

Re: 26 app for downloading @ maemo5

the procedure is different, the QA is more stringent, so extras will be populated slower. Weeks ? certainly not, but months vs years will depend on the general popularity of the N900

Thanks. It’s nice that there are a lot of things in development. One of the things that in my opinion fail in the maemo community it’s the graphics. In my opinion we should try to involve some supplementary designers.

their experience will not help the "older maemo.org people" in this case. circumstances are very, very different. it's more difficult to get apps to extras (quality control), there's serious alternatives (ovi store), otoh the device may soon attract a much higher number of users and developers than than the internet tablets did... anything can happen. counting apps in extras may remain an interesting thing to do.

I've been trying to help out where I can, I'm not master, but I have some basic to intermediate skills. Any ideas on how designers can better help the developers? Some seem to take us in with open arms, others hate us :S

Is there any feedback from ovi? Any way to know what they are doing besides what we can see in http://maemo.nokia.com/maemo-select/applications ?

Can someone help clear up something for me please?
Am I correct in thinking that only the apps at Ovi are n900 approved?
With extras and extras-testing, are there not risks installing these?
Im thinking specifically of the post I saw about someone filling their system partition up in a couple of days? I'm presuming that was becuase the apps were not n900 optimised??

It would be nice for the developers to provide some screen shorts for the applications. Picture is worth a 1000 word.

a package needs to pass quality control before it can go to extras. this includes the memory issues you read about as well as a lot of other things (performance, battery usage, critical bugs, ...)

so: extras is safe. whats not safe for end users is extras-devel and -testing.

Cool - think I will put that in the wiki later on as that is useful to know

you might want to link to
http://wiki.maemo.org/Extras-testing/QA_Checklist

while this page is essentially for devs who test each others packages, it might be comforting for end users to know which aspects are regarded important.

Yesterday I was commemorating the 27 app and suddenly we passed to 32 (Mauku 2.0, Microfeed backend, Sliderule 1.0.2-1, Nako 0.5.0-1, Droid Fonts 1.01)
This is a much better passing time instead of complaining for the delay of the N900.
It’s a pity that we can't test.

Anybody knows if the people from offscreen technologies will put all their application and games on maemo. I have tons of amazing material from them in my 5800 xpressmusic. If they are using Qt, I guess it should be easy????

That's a mighty big IF. Considering the first official Symbian supporting Qt is 4.6 (not yet released), I would be very surprised if any commercial, currently widely deployed Symbian application was based on Qt.

By the app look&feel of the apps seems Flash technology using Nokia's WRT, if so should be fairly easy to port in a near future :)

Ye I agree that pictures are very important. I could certainly help with downloading apps just to take screenshots and upload them. definitely a thing community members could upload, and the authors could reject certain screenshots they dont like

Re: 26 app for downloading @ maemo5

Yes, but it's not always as clear cut as it seems at first sight. For libraries and 'enablers' it might be difficult to come up with a meaningful screenshot. Occasionally it can get tricky with apps, too - people repeatedly ask for screenshots of the "Mirror" app which is, well, a mirror.

Yeah. They are in various stages of development, I used mirror to get to know the Fremantle release process better. Other projects of interest are Pyqtoreader, Shepherd, QTE, nursing the orphaned PyQt into Fremantle and probably good deal of projects I can't recall right now :) The screenshots are sadly outdated by several months/years, I'll update them when the up-to-date versions start landing in Fremantle repositories.

Congratulations, nice applications hope to see them finished for the N900 soon.

Looking at the page of maemo apps (growing almost hourly) two things strike me.

One is that it would be soooo handy if the list of categories down the side showed how many apps were in each category (to spare me clicking on emptty categories).

The other is that it might be nice to polite remind the clever app and widget creators to make sure that the description of what their app does needs to be JoePublic/TeddyBear friendly. Some are great... others leave me mystified. ;)

Heh, empty categories are not expected after release :)

Leave a comment with that remark ! Seriously, this is a community effort and you can't expect the maintainers to follow all forums and lists - the best way to let them know about what you miss (or like !) is to comment on the product page (or the bugtracker).

Fair comment. I'm waiting till I actually have a device. But one or two fo the apps left me wondering what they do. I just kind of assumed "that's a technical thing so not for me" but an explanation would help. I might get technical one day!

Well, ideally, when you click on the app, it should show you the explanation of what the app does at the top of the page, like here:

http://maemo.org/packages/package_in...peccy/1.6.8-1/

Some people are not providing this information in their packages though. They should. In fact, I am sure that anyone actually planning to promote his package into Extras will.

Re: 26 app for downloading @ maemo5

Is "good description" part of the Extras QA process? I think it should be, and there should probably be guidelines about how long it should be, who it should be aimed at, etc.

You should only blame people who have got their free N900s at the Summit but are not voting for Extras-Testing apps. If you have got an N900 and are not voting, blame yourself.

Have N900. Was happily testing apps, filing bugs, and voting. Have stopped. So, blame me.

It's been made clear several times in several different discussions on promotion and testing that unless a person is fully testing apps, he or she is hurting the testing effort. I don't have the time or inclination to, for instance, find out where every file in a package has hidden itself away in the file system of my device, so I've eliminated myself from the testing pool.

Should qgil's suggestion of permitting voting on individual promotion criteria be implemented, I will joyfully set about testing once again, but until then, since I can't do it right, I won't do it at all.
