Looks like this will be better than the out of the box web browser.

It is good to see Fennec not sucking (so badly) anymore!

Re: FireFox (beta4)

That weave feature is something I've been wanting for a long time. Didn't really think of it in context of the N900 but I move between a workstation and laptop all the time and constantly wish I had this feature. Del.icio.us works ok for that, but this weave looks like a great productivity enhancer.

Re: FireFox (beta4)

so fennec project name looks to have been dropped and now they just calling it FireFox,
i think theres good reason why and thats b/c MicroB was starting to be called firefox amongst the less informed bloggers instead MicroB

Re: FireFox (beta4)

I think I'm not enamored of the browser tabs off the left margin - Maemo already has a UI for switching to another webpage running in the background. How is this superior?

what happened to the circular motion to zoom in and out?

Good catch. Is the "twirl" a Hildon thing?

NvyUs 2009-11-02 22:40

Re: FireFox (beta4)

different browser circular zoom is the built in microB

I did not really understand how that connection with the computer works, anyone care to explain? But it sounds so awesome, do you just start your web browser at home and go to a site and when you start it on the phone it loads the same page?

qole 2009-11-03 00:25

Re: FireFox (beta4)

I think the two browsers are connected through "Weave".

I think the big-eared fennec was a cooler mascot than the snowboarding fox.

Feature "stolen" from opera browser/operamini...

I hope that works as good as it works in operamini/opera desktop.

Re: FireFox (beta4)

Hmm i don't like the fact that you have to slide in order to see the tabs and the back forward buttons. This MIGHT BE ANNOYING!! You want to see everything on the screen at ONCE!! This way it's more convenient. So every time you want to go "back," you have to slide?? Think about it! Not very convenient. IT's like doing double tasks.

Why can't they just put the back and forward button on TOP so that if you want to go back..just touch and bammm..you're back....rather than sliding to find that button. I am sure there enough room to fit the buttons.

Absolutely. A Brainstorm proposal has been brewing in my head about this and related data/state hand-off features...

Re: FireFox (beta4)

He didn't show us how we select text and edit in the browser, how history works (is there thumbnails of the pages we already visited? ), if we can see multiple tabs as new windows in dashboard, if we can open a link in different tab, if we can see url of links or photos and copy them and some more.

I think swing zoom works only in built-in browser but, what about thw hardware volume keys? Many features missing from the video.

Some nice features included but I think, MicroB is a better choice and Firefox is a very good browser as a backup.

I hear what your saying, but i think they want to leave as much real estate(im having a brainfreeze as cant get that word right) for webpage viewing as possible. However, since this is a resistive screen they should implement gestures similar to the twirl-zoom. something like from-right-to-left-then-down motion to indicate "back" and from-left-to-right-then-up motion to indicate "forward" or something to that effect.

Firefox for Maemo Beta 4 caught running on Nokia N900

The inbuilt browser of Maemo powered Nokia N900 runs on the Mozilla Gecko engine. Now Firefox for Mobile
a.k.a Fennec has been caught running on the Nokia N900.In this video Jay Sullivan who is Mozilla’s VP of Mobile gives us a quick tour of Firefox for mobile (beta 4) running on Nokia’s N900.

Good browser but the tab and "back and forward" buttons should not be on the side. It's very inconvenient.

Yes. In fact we already have two theads.

Here and here. Both on the front page.

It's too bad there's no Alt key on the keyboard, so you can use a standard Alt + Left Arrow or Right Arrow, to go back and forward. I wonder if there's some other keyboard shortcut for this?

It would be cool to have some kind of Turbo mode a la Opera 10.

backspace for back.

Don't misspell. It's Firefox, not FireFox.

God: those are MicroB shortcuts and zooming options, do not confuse it with Fennec.

I guess @qole and @zerozay are working on that. Could be wrong though.

This would be a really good feature. I like this feature in Opera. People on Bandwidth budget and those on slower networks will both benefit from this!!

Btw was just wondering, how difficult is to port Opera to Maemo?

Opera (not mini) was the original browser on Maemo before OS2008. I'm still using it on my N800 (which I still run OS2007 on). I occasionally switch to MicroB for some rare occasions where it works better, but Opera is my day-to-day browser.

Not sure you want to let "some" websites know how your "device" is moving!

Zoom in and zoom out functions don't seem to be very responsive. + I wonder if it has that neat copy&paste functionality the native browser has.
