Bluetooth tethering and Tomtom

Hi there,

I am looking to upgrade to an N900 very soon, but have a requirement that has been causing me trouble for the past couple of years. ideally I'd like to be able to tether my Tomtom Go 720 to my N900 in order to receive live traffic updates. This was a nightmare with an HTC Touch Dual, and has just broken with my currnt Nokia E71.

Not sure whether this is the correct place to post such a question, but any thoughts? I like having a seperate Sat Nav device, but may have to go with a software solution ...

Cheers

(Oh and anyone know when it will be available on Orange?:)

Does the Tomtom Go 720 tether via Bluetooth DUN or PAN? Either one should work, but not out of the box. Depending upon which profile the Go 720 supports, you'll need to at least edit one system configuration file, and you may also need to create and run a small script. Please see "Fremantle Unsupported Bluetooth profiles".

From what I've seen, thus far, tethering to the N900 hasn't been widely tested with a wide range of devices, so there may be other, yet unknown little gotchas requiring work arounds. If you attempt to tether your Go 720 and run into trouble, please post a request for help.

Thanks for this - I thought that it might be the case that I would be a guinea pig in doing this - fingers crossed!

i have a tomtom 730 which does not recognize n900 at all, tomtom does not even see the n900.
but n900 on the other hand see tomtom as a hands free device and it wants to pair.
In a bluetooth menu shows as HFP supported profile

so i would think tomtom does not support n900 as of yet

My TomTom 550 GO won't see the N900 either. Absolutely no sign of it when I do a discovery. Very frustrating as I want to use it for handsfree (I don't need to do any tethering).

I think it is that the TomTom doesn't recognise the N900 as a phone and this is a problem with the N900, not TomTom.:(

Tomtom not recognizing N900 might be related to this issue:

Yes! it is - i changed the class as described and TomTom recognised it and paired with it. The only problem now is to make it permanent.

I have added a note to the bug report (https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7849).

as of new upgrade nokia shows as a cellphone
also tomtom finds nokia as a phone now before it did not,
not able to connect to internet cause n900 does not support *#99# at the moment

Although the change to the device class doesn't seem to be permanent, even with the new firmware (for me at least) I'm happy to report that TomTom, having paired once with the N900 keeps on connecting when it is range. So that's my problem solved.:)

I haven't tried tethering as my Tomtom is the live version with built in comms. I'm just using the hands free for the rare call I get when in the car.

Sorry to bug, but does anyone know of a way around this? Got my TomTom Go 520 connected to my N900 as a handsfree just fine, but can't connect to the Internet.

Cheers!

I've seen references to a USSD widget that supports this. Google gave me this link. I haven't tried it myself.

I wouldn't recommend that - I find that sometimes my TomTom doesn't output incoming voice from a call (even though it connects without a problem these days). Also, it is not particularly loud. To me it is OK for *very* occasional use. If I needed a hands free more than very occasionally, I would get a separate one and not rely on my TomTom.

I miss using my tomtom for traffic etc too, it see's my n900 fine, but when it connects to it, the tomtom says my phone does not have the right features to support the tomtom! only an old tomtom go 300 but it worked fine on every other phone i've had

So how do those of us that are not developers get this support. Anyone out there want to provide something to install that does the job of the script(s) mentioned in this forum? I HAD to change my 6682 (loved that phone) and chose the N900 but really, really, miss my traffic app with TomTom. It looks like I need DUN support (why doesn't Nokia do this?) and something that makes the N900 look like a phone.

Have you tried Bluetooth Dial-Up Networking? It was released in Extras last year, so it is readily available via Application Manager.

So is it possible for a tomtom device to get the hdtraffic info via an internet connection? I thought this was nly possible with the tomtom live boxes that include a gsm chip...

Just downloaded that and thanks, now the two pair with each other but still TomTom cannot access the data it needs. Looks like I need to look into codes etc. Even though the 6682 just worked.
