Will the browser remember where i left off, just like on pc?

I was wondering, couldn't find this anywhere... On the desktop I usually have Firefox open and i have about 40 tabs active, which i use the whole day. When i close Firefox, it asks me wheter it should "save" the tabs, so when I launch it next time, all the previously active tabs/pages load and i can continue exactly where i left off last time.

Does this feature exist either in MicroB or Fennec/Firefox on the N900?

I think many people would appreciate it...
And on a side-note, can someone show us a video of Fennec in portrait mode please?

Thanks!

Is stll microb on the N900, not Fennec.

It doesn't restore state, which IMO is a good thing on such a device. You don't want battery being sucked to load pages that your not even still interested in.

I dont see why battery will be wasted if I am not interested in loading the page and say cancel to the dialog which requests whetehr you want to load the old pages or not ?

Tear on N800/ N801 has this feature - and it asks in a dialof if you wanted to laod the last pages when the browser was closed or shyuut-down inadvertantly.

If you press cancel, it doesn't load anything at all.
I think it would be a good feature to have on the N900 browsers.

Well I don't know what happens when microb crashes, that hasn't happened to me yet.

Really if you want to keep some pages open just keep the browser page open. Tab restoration obviously doesn't make sense when they aren't tabs and you never really quit the browser (its always running to make it launch faster). The whole restoration system requires there being a close operation separate from the quit operation. Microb doesn't have quit, you just close and open windows

I'm pretty sure this is a feature you won't miss. Its a feature that makes sense on a *desktop* which you turn off once a day, not a *phone* which you never turn off. It makes sense if you open 40 tabs on your desktop... not on a phone where that would be very very ill-advised.

I'm thinking you'll need to use for the Fennec Browser, mozilla's "firefox" for internet tablets to put it simply, to use the feature the exact way you are looking for,
there may be a way to with the native browser but obviously I haven't played with it

People who are reliant on relatively trivial features like this should cancel their orders.

It's not so much that this feature won't be added -- it probably will. But if you are so particular that your current way of doing things remain exactly the same as it is now, the N900 is bound to upset you in one way or another. So don't get one, especially as you are 100% happy with the way you are currently doing things.

In that video in a thread, they're running Fennec with an extension called "weave". It connects your mobile with your computer, and vice versa. Tabs open, extensions..etc.
http://mozillalabs.com/weave/
It looks really interesting!

So is there any chance of getting Weave addon to work with Maemo Browser ?

That would be pretty awesome. Fennec isn't looking all too hot yet, what with the lag and all...

The video of the guy from Firefox demoing it on the N900 uses it and explains it pretty extensively. And when he looks at the extensions, the top of the screen says "Fennec"
So yeah, it does work with tne native browser :)

No. That doesn't work.

My experience of Firefox on a laptop (all versions; I'm using 3.5.4 now on Ubuntu 9.10), is that open pages sometimes consume a lot of power.

Many pages are static and should consume no power at all when not actively being used. But a disturbingly large number of pages have enough Javascript and/or flash and/or animations running that if I ever see my CPU using 50% or more and I'm not doing anything, it's nearly always Firefox using it on another desktop.

There's not a lot it could do about that, unless you want it to freeze script activity in windows that haven't been used for a whlie and/or are not currently visible.

Anyway, for that reason, I sometimes find myself quitting Firefox as a whole when I need to conserve battery on my laptop, and restarting it when I need to browse some more. The "restore all tabs and windows" feature is invaluable for that.

It doesn't help that you can't tell which pages are causing the CPU consumption, except closing them one by one, so that makes it hard to be selective.

And that's why "just keep all your windows open" won't work - unless they have found a magical way to stop excessive CPU consumption of all web pages.

Of course, I don't really need these 50 tabs open all the time. It'd be fine to have something more like "currently in use" bookmarks that behave _similar_ to open tabs & windows in keeping a large rendering of the page to hand, as the position in the page I was looking it, so I can flick through them to remind myself what of active items I'm researching, but with scripting activity inactive. (Bookmark titles don't work - titles are often useless as reminders of just _why_ I put some page aside while working on something else). I haven't found a bookmarking plugin thats suitable for me, for Firefox yet, but hold out hope still. Maybe it's built into N900 already? ;-)

I believe the question was in regards to the Maemo browser (often called MicroB, though that is inaccurate). Fennec is a separate browser, one not installed by default.

By default, the Maemo browser does pause JavaScript.

For Firefox Desktop, you need to check out the Too Many Tabs add-on. It creates another toolbar for parking tabs. Want to temporarily unload a tab from memory? Click on the little arrow & it bounces to the TMT toolbar. Want to load it again for viewing? Click on it again and it bounces to the regular toolbar. It appears to be compatible Tree Style Tab, another tabaholic add-on for viewing open tabs (i.e., taking up memory) in a tree control.

I'm not sure this would work with the N900, but you might want to check out this tip on integrating Google Bookmarks with your browser (in this case it's Tear but hopefully other browsers work similarly).
