Samsung H1: a N900 killer?
I just heard about this serious competitor (if don't need a keyboard)
which is based on another Linux OS (LiMo). I wonder whether Maemo can be ported this device? Here's the list of differences wrt. N900 which I could find: + 115.8 x 58.0 x 12.9 mm @ 134 g + 3.5" AMOLED 800x480 display + capacitive multitouch display + 1500 mAh battery (500h standy, 6h talk) + high-quality and robust build + HD video 1280 x 720 @ 25 fps + FM-reciever, proximity sensor + SAR only 0,4W/kg + Opera 9.6 browser + available NOW! + price w/o contract ca. 350 EUR in Germany * LiMo (Linux Mobile) OS * TI OMAP 3430 600 MHz (same as N900) CPU/GPU chipsets * 5 Megapixel autofocus camera (2560x1920) + frontal VGA camera * 16 GB internal flash, SDHC card slot - no physical keyboard - no IR, TV-out - only Bluetooth 2.0 - dual band UMTS (900/2100Mhz). and some links: http://samsungh1.com/samsung-h1-specs/ http://www.geeky-gadgets.com/vodafon...der15-10-2009/ http://shop.vodafone.co.uk/shop/mobi...360-samsung-h1 http://www.inside-handy.de/handys/vo...bericht_1.html first users report that you would need to get used to the software but they're exited about the hardware. |

I'm a physical keyboard person but, that definitely looks sexy Spec and Design-wise.

In what way is this a killer?? I don't see it.

Re: Samsung H1: a N900 killer?
For my needs as a mobile office, keyboard and TV-out are what makes N900 of worth.
That, and easy debian. |

some reasons for potential buyers could be: The H1 costs 30% less than the N900. Some people prefer capacitative screens and find the resistive screen of the N900 a drawback. There's some hope that USB host mode could be implemented as this device is not charged by via USB. |
Re: Samsung H1: a N900 killer?
LiMo? If it's the same LiMo I remember then I think even Android is more open than LiMo. And Nokia owns Maemo.. so it's unlikely that it would ever be ported, especially given the closed parts. Mer on the other hand might be possible if the drivers are there.

the H1 is probably more a direct N920 competitor, if someone can port an open Linux to it. |
Re: Samsung H1: a N900 killer?
Samsung is a hardware manufactuer, and no one can deny that they are capable of wonderful hardware. ;)
However, a phone must be well-balanced between both the hardware and the software, and in this case it's the software that can (although doesn't have to) be the possible limitation. See Samsung's Iphone 3GS for reference: it has great hardware made by Samsung, but the locked-down Apple software completely ruined it. :( |
Re: Samsung H1: a N900 killer?
Minuses:
No keyboard Not charged via USB No dpad on the face Opera Not necessarily a minus, but a hurdle to adoption (for me, at least): I have no idea what things that version of Linux allows or doesn't -- terminal window? OpenSSH? other SSH (not PuTTY!)? etc. |

At least for me they still are missing the final polish and i don't really like their designs(this goes for H1 too imo). Still my Omnia HD has worked great and one of the rare good looking Samsungs i have found. |
