Will MMS support be added to Maemo 5 / N900? If so, when?

This will be my first Nokia device and was wondering what those of you that have been around the Nokia camp thought on this issue.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Will we see MMS on the N900 in 2010?

Can someone put this one to bed quickly by answering;

a) Is the N900 CAPABLE of MMS? Why do I remember reading something about it being something to do with missing stacks. Personally I couldn't care less about MMS, never use it - just curious.

b) If capable, then it should be an easy enough process developing an app for MMS if Nokia don't support it directly?

Re: Will we see MMS on the N900 in 2010?

No word on wether Nokia will do it or not - the community is planning on doing it though!

http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=32129

In short, the thing it's not capable of atm is maintaining connections to both the MMSC and whatever other connection you happen to have open at the time (ie 3G data or whatever). If you read the link above (the last few pages) we have a few community members hacking away (quite succesfully by the looks, so far) at implementing this.

No promises, but I do hope to have basic MMS support in before new year (i.e. send/receive when not using a data connection currently). :)

Re: Will we see MMS on the N900 in 2010?

Hey guys,

do you really think Nokia won't support MMS?
The world's largests mobile phone company?

Oh no - the answer is: The N900 is a mobile computer with some phone capabilities.
And MMS is for sure not a feature to have implemented at the first step.
So I think they better use their manpower concentrating on other features first.

But ....wait and see. I think MMS will come in a future firmware version.

Nice to know.

I have never owned a device with such support. Within the last 4 years, I have been on iPhones and a Palm Pre.

Looking forward to a breath of fresh air. I just hope T-Mobile works well in my area as this will be my personal/business all in one phone.

Just a Questione : But if you have full e-mail function ( with attachment and html function ) ... What you need to use mms ?

To send pictures to people with mobile phones, who don't use email (eg my mum!). Also to receive pictures from those people (although some operators will text you a link to the picture on the web)

Re: Will we see MMS on the N900 in 2010?

The problem IMO is not sending MMS since you can send emails, but recieving MMS...

Used to be a fun feature some years back, but cant remember when last I used it.
It is still a feature that some might use.

Re: Will we see MMS on the N900 in 2010?

My mother still sends me pictures from wherever she happens to be that day if she spots something worth snapping. It's a simple and intuitive way to send something.

Take Picture-> Press Send -> Press "by MMS" -> Select Recipient -> Send it .
From my perspective I just receive a mesage on my phone with a picture in it. I don't have to connect to the web, I don't have to download it from a link, it's just there.

With a lot of UK carriers international roaming charges are cheaper for MMS than text in USA!

With the N900 you can share your photo just pushing two buttons via Bluetooth , e-mail and also Ovi by Nokia, Flickr and Facebook.

So your mam can share to you and also to other people her photo :-).

Everithing using the data connection, withouse use mms and withous spends a lot of money. Here in Italiy 1 mms costs 1 euro.

:-)

Same here in .nl. Screw the MMS feature. I will never use it. Put effort in other things (like multiple calendar integration).

Over 500 million MMS messages were sent last year in the UK alone. (Source)

Just because you don't use it, doesn't mean other people don't. It's the only way many of us have to exchange quick pictures with family member who don't, and won't, own a high end smart phone/MID.

It's also a big source of revenue for operators. If we want them to subsidise Maemo devices it's something you need to think about.

Of those mentioned only bluetooth does what mms does, and bluetooth has some pretty obvious limitations.

MMS is used to send a picture to one person and they receive it immediately. That's it. If it cost 1 € it's completely pointless naturally (40 cents with TIM though, still way too expensive) but with my operator here in finland it's 6 cents, the same as an sms, so it's pretty useful if you need to show something right away.

Either way I really think it's a useful service since not everyone is instantly reachable by email or im.

I ordered my N900 without an operator. I hate to be tied to a company. And the big revenue is exactly the reason why i won't use it. It's waaaaay overpriced. People should know that.

Ummm MMS? is this a realy usefull function? i never send a mms on my entire life, im from dominican republic and 1 sms cost around 0.95 dominican peso (us $0.02 dollar) and a mms cost $50 dominican peso (us$1.38 dollar).

I think if you cant send mms just send an email, if the other person cant receive email on the phone so he needs to wait arrive home and get the email pictures on the pc. Its simple.

sorry for my english.

I order rail tickets with my phone and get a code sent by mms.
At the train the mms code is scanned.
So I can use my phone as a ticket saving me some time because I can buy my ticket on the go and not at the station.

That's why mms is important and usefull for me.

I agree mms is very important indeed, not everyone we know will have a N900's other people that dont have smartphones will still be sending us mms messages

Does N900 support MMS?

Hi, all
I read some material said that Maemo 5 does not support MMS yet, Is this true? Because now I have no N900 device, cannot verify that. I anyone know, please share me. Thanks a lot!

currently the n900 does not have mms support.Hopefully we will see this support soon with an update, that and portrait mode.

You mean Portrait mode is not supported either, so do you know when will it support?

Next firmware update, due to release before Christmas

Why do you want to use MMS to send poor quality images captured on a 5mp camera?
Why MMS when you have 3G connection to upload them online?

MMS is old-tech which should be phased out.

I sent 2 MMS maybe in the past 3 years?

Re: Does N900 support MMS?

well it's not because we want to old technology, when we have our powerful n900's with 3g capability to access flickr or any other multimedia source online, it's because 80 percent of our friends are still stuck in old technology....

Yep, I can't agree with you any more!

hihai411 2009-12-01 07:41

Re: Does N900 support MMS?

You have to remember not everyone has a powerful smartphone. I still know people that use Razr's and sometimes when they see something funny or weird thats their only way of transmitting a photo quickly and easily. Having mms comes in handy until all dumbphones are phased out.

You do realise that only portrait mode for the browser has been promised, not that everything would work in portrait? People are going to be let down if they're told that it's all going to be there when it necessarily isn't.

Re: Does N900 support MMS?

MMS may be possible in the future updates, Portrait also may be possible in the future up date as well. Both are not out of the possibilities.

this is exactly the dilemma. technically totally inferior technology is still used because it is easier to the most. (and affordable etc)

Just because you can receive MMS from your airline, which makes it
very easy to check in.

Just hold the MMS over the scanner und you are checked in.

Re: Does N900 support MMS?

I still cannot believe MMS was left out

According to this site, http://blog.return2sender.ie/categor...ing-(MMS).aspx

In Ireland alone, in the 3rd Quarter 2008 10.5 Million MMS messages were sent. I even had my aunt laugh at me because my new state of the art phone could not even do a picture message. ( I had to hide my head in shame) I use to send my nan the occasional MMS as she has no computer, now i cannot.

I still cannot believe people think uploading a picture to a website is a viable alternative, the whole point of MMS is no matter where the other person is, could be in a shop, their phone goes BEEP BEEP (they are alerted to the picture)and they see the picture or video without any messing around. Can you imagine sending a e-mail instead of an SMS? It could be 2 minutes or 2 days before its noticed, but generally people have the phones on them or around them all the time.

That is simply not true. The browser(!) will get portrait mode in the next update, not the complete OS.

The cure for that is to tell them, "No it's not the outfit, your butt IS big."
