Heads-up on the Square Trade Warranties
I posted this on the monster thread a few days ago, but I think it deserves its own thread for the benefit of those affected.
When I initially ordered my N900 from Amazon I ordered the offered 3 year warranty. This warranty is from a company called Square Trade. I hadn't yet done anything about that warranty, but since I canceled my order with Amazon and went to Dell instead I decided to go in and see how it works. I tried creating an account through their web page, but I never received an email. So I called them. The guy on the phone was very helpful. He created my account for me with a temporary password. I then explained to him that the warranty was purchased back in October and that I was wondering if the 3 year warranty started counting from the time of purchase or from the time of the product delivery. He said that it starts from the time you purchase the warranty. Oops #1. I then explained to him that I had canceled my device order through Amazon and that I was purchasing it from Dell instead. I asked him if the warranty would apply to the device purchased from Dell and he said that it would not. He said that they can transfer a warranty from person to person, but not from device to device. Oops #2. The good thing is that the warranty can be canceled within 90 days of purchase for a full refund. He was helpful enough to cancel it for me. I still think I am going to purchase this warranty for the device, but I am going to wait until it ships. ;) |
Re: Heads-up on the Square Trade Warranties
It is a heads-up for those that purchased a Square Trade warranty for a pre-ordered device (say Amazon) and then switch to another store for their N900 (like New Egg or Dell). I know that several people did that and I read several posts indicating that the original warranty would carry over. So, I just want this to be clear for those (few they may be) in this situation.

Yes, I purposely made the title sound a little alarming in order to catch the attention of those affected. People who are not on that situation can promptly bread easily after reading the content. :)

Re: Heads-up on the Square Trade Warranties
So where do I go on Amazon when I get my N900 from Dell (I hope)?
Can I wait to get the N900 and then get the warranty? At the rate we are going, I may use two months of paying for a warranty with no phone yet ;) |
Re: Heads-up on the Square Trade Warranties
i am going to use squaretrade after i recieve it. that is how they will trace it to the esn.
not sure why it would be valid for a handset that requires an esn/imei with square trade. |
Re: Heads-up on the Square Trade Warranties
I actually called them up to cancel it and they said they would add an exception on my account, I would just need to put my invoice on Newegg on there.

Re: Heads-up on the Square Trade Warranties
I just checked and it is quoting $77 for two years for a G1 type phone. Not seeing any parameter that suggests $50 for an N900 type phone for three years- was that a deal only through Amazon?
Update- Yep. MUCH better deals through Amazon. Best I could find though was three years for $64 for $400 or less phones. Still way better than the G1 quote on their direct site. |
Re: Heads-up on the Square Trade Warranties
It's a deal only from Amazon, and if you read it. It'll say "only applies to devices bought from Amazon".

Re: Heads-up on the Square Trade Warranties
I asked a couple of weeks ago, and from what I was told in an e-mail, the warranty starts from the purchase/charge date, and it cannot be transfered to another retailer. Here is the e-mail I sent, and the response:

Re: Heads-up on the Square Trade Warranties
I wanted to order n900 from new egg so i called square trade and asked them. They said if you buying warranty from amazon, you have to buy the phone from them too. If you buying from some where else you have to buy warranty from their web site. The problem is that one their website the warranty is only for two years and covers phones up to 399$.
So, i preordered the phone from amazon and bought the warranty, Actually the warranty works after 30 days,( but i do not know after 30 days i preordered it or after i got it) |
Re: Heads-up on the Square Trade Warranties
drops and spills can be claimed after 30 days.
The problem that you have to stay with amazon, if you order from somewhere else you are not going to get this kind of deal. |
Re: Heads-up on the Square Trade Warranties
The cancel confirmation email I got from Square Trade about my Amazon order included a 10% coupon that I can use for my new warranty. Also, I received this info from ST after I sent them an email with some questions:

Re: Heads-up on the Square Trade Warranties
Hmm I really hope they did add an exception on my account instead of lying to me to stop me from canceling it..

Re: Heads-up on the Square Trade Warranties
FYI they limit their liability to $399 with a cell phone 2 year warranty.
