This is the main reason why I feel that maemo devices are what I want to be using. I've received so much help from this community, and I know what they've been capable of with the N8X0 tablets.

I can only imagine what the community will have churned out a year after the N900 has been out.

Very exciting!
:P

Ive always loved Nokia.. They always made the best performing phones but they were getting smashed recently just because there was no active community of developers and users...

Im glad they made the N900, the most powerful and practical phone out there.. Plus now there's gonna be an amazing community

The community has been here for a while, but luckily with the popularity of the N900 I think it is getting Injected with a lot of new blood!

This can only bring about great things! Can't wait!

Re: Maemo Community blows me away

I just realised how greedy that all makes me look. Two out of the three projects mentioned were at my request!

But I have to agree: the responsiveness of the community is a definite plus point for maemo. One of my reasons for purchasing n900 (assuming it arrives before the parousia) was the community. :)

Re: Maemo Community blows me away

I can only agree with previous posters. If anyone would ask me for the main reason to get an N900, this community would be it. Doesn't really matter if the person were interested in tech or programming, it's the way everybody just comes together, helps out and supports eachother.. Very cool, at least for me.

Another fine example is the widget request thread zerojay started, and all the widgets fiferboy is churning out in response to it. :)

I'll also add to this thread.

I asked about Eboard and BAM! a new compiled version was made by Bruce Forsberg within two days and he's even open for suggestions to improve it!

Good people indeed! :)

Re: Maemo Community blows me away

What I like best is things like when maemo mapper 2.6 didn't work with my N800/OS2007 setup then it was just a matter of dumping the source to disk, adjust the code, build and install and I had a working maemo mapper again, before my trip to unmapped lands. I couldn't do this that easily with any other mobile device I've owned.

In other words: The community is good, and the open aspect of Maemo is good, and I believe the former is made possible by the latter.

  • MacBook Pro with Mac OS/X and Debian Linux
  • Work desktop running Debian Linux
  • Home PC running Ubuntu Linux
  • Old laptop running Debian Linux
  • Three embedded ARM computers (work projects) running various Linuxes.

So the answer is "yes".

khrm i would like to remind you about wiki. take a look at http://wiki.maemo.org/Category:Beginners
I am very pissed off if the people who have been working hard with wiki aren't noticed here too.

for example:
http://wiki.maemo.org/Maemo_basics

http://wiki.maemo.org/New_users

I thought that it would take forever (next year maybe?) to get to this point after I got the idea from revdkathys beginner -point of view that we need a wiki section for total noobs and started drumming for it.

I'm only the man that got the thing started, the state now was accomplished together. so thanks to everyone who has done something for the wiki pages for beginners.

ossipena, no reason to be pissed off-- I don't think the OP really meant to slight anyone, he just provided examples.

But anyway, I've expressed my appreciation before for the wiki crew and trust me, I'm not the only one feeling it!

I came to Maemo pretty recently because it's a (more or less) open free software system, specifically because of the advantages and community that that enables. I'm very pleased that the community around the OS is this good and active but it's what I was looking for, so I'm not surprised by it. However, while I'm sure I'm not alone in that, it strikes me that other people may be here for different reasons and from different backgrounds, and that this might be their first experience of what free software communities tend to be like.

Basically though, I'm just curious.

Yes. I run Debian on my own systems. The tools I need I simply recompile and install in the same way (using the same install tools) as with my other computers. (These are mostly stuff that doesn't need graphical UI porting. Because that's really the only difference between my other boxes and my current N800).

Re: Maemo Community blows me away

Don't forget the crazy way fiferboy coded up a handful of desktop widgets at our request. I've got a great dataplan monitor, IP address display, and photo frame widget because of his great work... And joshua.maverick did the icons and graphics... very cool...

This community is awesome. Ok, it will be more awesome when we see the last post in the last "Has your N900 shipped yet" thread. I don't mind newbie questions, but endless threads full of bogus information from online sales reps... argh...

Yes, I have Ubuntu on most of my machines at home. As someone who seems to always be needing help, I can say with some authority that the Ubuntu forums aren't nearly as helpful as the Maemo ones.

Yes, Ubuntu on the laptop, OpenSolaris on the NFS file server, and Ubuntu on the HTPC.
And Maemo on the 770, N800, N810, N900.
Oh, and some embedded Linux on the Panasonic TV.

Re: Maemo Community blows me away

I wanted to re-open this and thank a few people who lately have been real community stars in my opinion:

RevdKathy

She burst in as a "bear with little brain" but rapidly proved that wrong by very quickly gaining a foothold in the community and in short order was offering advice to other newbies as one of the first Maemo Greeters. Her enthusiasm, humor, and overall attitude have endeared her to many and I'm starting to think of her as my own "right hand woman". ;) More like her please!

YoDude

He and I are often at odds over semantics but he has an uncanny knack to inject sobriety into heated threads just when it's needed. He has been a steady influence here and a great devil's advocate when it's needed-- which is often.

epage

Ed is the ultimate application developer in my opinion. His work with DialCentral is unmatched. He is patient with complaints and never seems to get rattled by demands. His inclusion of an app log capturing feature should be a Maemo best practice IMO. Ed should give classes on excellent development!

Note that I do not mean to slight anyone. As the thought occurs I will gladly recognize others. These 3 just came to mind due to recent events and trends.

More recognition:

Flandry, chemist

Both of these guys stepped in to help in Brainstorm when qgil and I were away or overloaded. They've also been given other moderator duties, and Flandry is notable for his now-famous sticky post about the last firmware upgrade. I'm really pleased with these guys, especially their calm approach to posting. Very helpful.

Sjgadsby

Long-time member who selflessly and consistently publishes Bugzilla data for your consumption. Please, please, please read his periodic reports and go through the bug jar lists. You may strike gold. Gadsby also does a tremendous amount of very necessary behind-the-scenes thread/post management.

fatalsaint

Passionate member who took some time off but returned to reinvigorate the place. Loves to debate but never takes disagreement personally as far as I can tell. When he's in a thread, you know it will be interesting!

Of course there are many more but these 4 stood out today. I will try to do this more often.

Re: Maemo Community blows me away

Lets not forget frals for taking an idea that most thought it's really hard to implement in such a short time by the community (MMS) to a reality (fMMS)..

I personally don't care about MMS but I just had to install it on my N900 because I was so amazed of the acomplishment in such a short time and by the community too! :D

Seriously, I've always known about Maemo and Nokia Internet Tablets and actually thought of getting the 770 and then the N8x0's but I never did because I always had fear when it came to linux, and I really didn't know that the Maemo community are so helpful! So although I don't know much about linux I am trying to help as much as I can so I can fit in with this community! :p

Yes fit in! hehe.

Anyways, since we're on this topic I would like to thank everyone for helping even when it comes to a very simple hack and I would love to see more and more applications/cool hacks for the N900 and I have a feeling that it will happen! :D

Re: Maemo Community blows me away

I have to say.. I really like this thread.. and no - not because Tex talks about me :p. So few of these threads exist without tarnishing that I'm thoroughly impressed and surprised.

While I don't necessarily feel I'm anything special - I do wholeheartedly agree with all the rest of those Texrat has mentioned. My only issue would be that there are so many excellent people in the Maemo community that there is no way to properly thank all of them for all of the hard work they put in and the help they provide to everybody. I would always feel bad to try and list users by name that warranted appreciation because my memory is not that good, and I'd be guaranteed to miss people.

Suffice to say... a big thank you from me to everyone that has ever helped provide any useful service to this community... from creating apps, to simply asking good questions - the Maemo community as a whole deserves praise.

And Tex:
Quote:

That just made me chuckle ;). I always figured a good debate is an excellent way to exercise the mind... after all - how boring would it be if everyone agreed all the time? :D
