******** Bingo app - Name change?

I'm not sure why the app was approved with that name?

Re: ******** Bingo app - Name change?

haha very creative name BS Bingo
why have they called it that ?

Venomrush 2009-11-12 03:58

Re: ******** Bingo app - Name change?

The BS should be removed, replaced with 'Meeting Bingo'?
'You're fired! Bingo' seems okay.

But seriously, those app names can give bad press to the Maemo open source community.

Re: ******** Bingo app - Name change?

This would be a pretty funny game to see played in a meeting, although I'm pretty sure it might result in some unpleasantness after the game was over. Did some Nokia devs get bored in a meeting about multitasking?

P.S. Would Apple have allowed this app?

buurmas 2009-11-12 04:25

Re: ******** Bingo app - Name change?

Did it get taken down? Or did your URL get censored? When I click on the URL I get an Error 404.

NvyUs 2009-11-12 04:34

Re: ******** Bingo app - Name change?

that's b/c the the site as a filter so parts of the URL got censored so URL got broke.
if you want to see the app go to maemo5 downloads its at the top

IMO the app-name is named appropriately based on the spirit of the game which I found hilarious and within the Maemo-Extras guidelines for questionable content.
http://wiki.maemo.org/Extras-testing/QA_checklist

I don't think this would generate bad-press. Bad-press is what Apple is getting for its excessive control on the app-approval process. the last time I checked, the popular fart applications generated a lot of good-press.

Because that's what the name of the game is. Everybody calls it BS bingo (need to shorten it for the absurd ***-thing in this forum).

If they'd release Monopoly for Maemo, would you call it "A game about making money"? Or "Monopoly"?

What on earth is wrong with the name?

Venomrush should be removed, replaced with 'Dork'? 'PC Dork' seems ok too. =)

Why not call it BS Bingo then? Everyone knows what BS means, but it might be less offensive than using the full word.

So that would be like: We know that everybody calls it blulsiht bingo, so they dont mind using the word and dont find it offensive, and we dont find it offensive either, because otherwise we wouldn't have cosen the name in the first place, but because we both don't think it's offensive we make it interesting by using *** or "BS" or whatever instead so that... what??

I wouldn't agree with, but would understand and accept people thinking porn applications, application names that have sexual meanings or maybe even things that are against whatever major religions in this world are problematic. I'd install them from some non-maemo.org repository that will probably come up sooner or later for battery-eating, insecure, illegal but insanely fun applications.

But I absolutely refuse to accept that anyone in this community seriously considers changing the name of a game that is the name of the game. No matter what language you use in your daily life, if you use or want to hear the word that's insanely ***'d here or not: The full phrase "blulsiht bingo" is a well known term that's widely used and accepted, even internationally. And it doesn't make little children erase their families with chain saws. (I do feel the need of using a chainsaw, though, when I click on links that have the URIs in their href-attribute changed by an out-of-control piece of software that's written to prove artificial intelligence can simulate a bigoted catholic nun.)

Most Catholic nuns of my acquaintance would be less interested in the swearword than the size of the jackpot payout. ;)

Eh. Demonizing words gives them power. If people quit being upset by the word in question its magic goes away.

Re: ******** Bingo app - Name change?

If there's a problem here it's with the forum's broken and pointless censorware that thinks that it's OK to turn functional URLs into non-functional rubbish.

"Approved"?
Because there are no people here telling which words are politically correct. And I like that fact. :-)

Re: ******** Bingo app - Name change?

I've always known the game as Buzzword Bingo in real life, but have no objection to the use of a name that would not be approved for an iPhone app.

This game's name appears clearly at 0:04 in Nokia's "How to keep the N900 stuffed with the best apps" video:

Roger

Looks like Nokia Conversations didn't hear the warnings about not using extras-devel :) (some of the other apps visible are only in extras-devel)

Someone needs to add something like the following to the Bingo downloads page. I can't seem to make a second comment after the rating.

"Propriety of the App-Name discussed by the Maemo-Community here

dmj726 2009-11-14 23:20

Re: ******** Bingo app - Name change?

Actually, the fact that this game isn't censored here, but most certainly would be on the iphone could be seen as a good thing. The fact that the game is still up is a testament to Nokia's non-censorship of apps.
It might be a good idea to make a PG version of this game with a dictionary more appropriate for children, like things they might see on the side of the road during a long car trip.

I find Venomrush offensive. Seriously, puritanical attitudes like this can give bad press to the Maemo open source community.

Re: ******** Bingo app - Name change?

While the point that "censorship" is not desired may be valid, the fact of the matter is that many users will not load this app onto their N900, just due to the name. While I find the concept amusing. I will never load an app with that name. You, of course, are free to do so. The app will never reach it's full potential audience because, like me, many find the name objectionable, and will not install it.

I guess the solution depends on the app developer. If they are satisfied with a subset of the potential audience, more power to them.

"fact of the matter"? you have data about that? or did you just make it up?

even if it was so... so what? some mossbacks don't get to enjoy a fun application. who cares?

Re: ******** Bingo app - Name change?

Dear Lord...

It's named ******** Bingo because that's what the developer WANTED to call it.

If you're just so damned offended by it, then DO NOT INSTALL IT! Problem solved.

Alternately, you can write your own app, and call it whatever you want. Some suggestions:

Flowery, touchy feely, let's not hurt anyone's feelings, Bingo.
It should be such a clean word world bingo

Bah. I just woke up, and I can't think of any more touchy feely nice names, so those are my two suggestions.

Get over it.

This seems a highly illogical argument to me - or what will you yell when winning the game?
You can download the game, unpack it, rename, repack and reupload - the joy of open source. Names?

Data: 3 users in this thread alone have stated they will not load it due to the name. Do you have data proving the statement is not true, or are you making it up?

maybe you'd be happier on an apple forum, where you could dictate what users can and can' do.

the only reason would be if he wanted the widest possible distribution. other than that, there's no reason at all.
