I am tired of those people not using the search function

Just in short:
Please search for stuff you want to ask before you post
Please put your Thread into the right Categories
Please give your Thread a proper name

Just ran into the "N900 specs" thread, someone was asking for the partitioning and what is the real chip size and so on, anoth asked right away for the Compass again, arent you getting tired of it aswell
I'm so tired I wont even search for the Threads refering to again.
there was the idea for marking a Thread interesting, please use the ranking if you recognize a thread being what the name looks and ask the people to change the name if not

Thanks I now go back to the 'Specs' guy and ask him to change the Thread name...

Me, I hate it when people don't capitalize :D

Edit: Wow, you actually went back and capitalized your opening post. Neat.

What about if i can not find something???
What about if i do not have a time to read 1000 posts to find an answer for my question???
If it is really hard for you to answer a question, for which you know an answer just shut you....

Re: I am tired of those people not using the search function

Do not forget that in the post there is one answer and 100000 bla bla bla bla that you have to read, if you was not flowing it from the beginning. And it is really hard to find what you looking for. If some one ask me and i knew where to find it I would point it out without any frrrrrrrrrfrrrrr

chemist 2009-11-14 01:00

Re: I am tired of those people not using the search function

Propose a solution for your Search problems, ask for condensing Threads...
If someone asks a question which is answered in every second thread I read there is something wrong?! Is it on purpose? Do I get credit for my postcount and do not know yet?
The blabla is bad yeah and clicking through 14 pages to find what you are looking for is anoying aswell but at least try to, please.

It would make it a lot easier to find stuff if at least a Threads name was what was asked in the Threads...

I answer a lot of questions because I searched for the answers already...

Re: I am tired of those people not using the search function

You know there is people who are flowing threads but some like me, just do not have time to read everything. I am not asking questions, I am trying to find it by my self but if someone could help me to point something out i would appreciate it.
Sorry chemist I was kind of angry...

Re: I am tired of those people not using the search function

You're both right :)

Sometimes you can't find things for which you looked, and you deserve to be treated individually with respect.

On the other hand, just asking without first searching is generally disrespectful of the community.

All this will be better soon once our forum has a proper Google Search -- in the meantime you can help yourselves and everyone else by putting this in your signature:

I love it when members don't search. After reading thousands of threads over the last two years, I find enjoyment in helping our world-wide brotherhood of NIT users.

People got annoyed previously when there was a large influx of new forum members. Anyone remember Technut?

Aw, I miss technut. He really livened the place up.

But with practice, I think Jayonthabeat has technut potential... a simple search should show why. :D

WOW, pointing out hitler is a very go(o)d one! (cant hold it)

I am asking for something! I didn't 'sudo' did I? Those questions I was talking about look like to be on purpose the same question over and over again. In any Thread that could be spec related, to get the one and only answer "No, there is no $item!"

Godwin's Law (also known as Godwin's Rule of Nazi Analogies) is a humorous observation made by Mike Godwin in 1990 which has become an Internet adage. It states: "As a Usenet discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1."The term Godwin's law can also refer to the tradition that whoever makes such a comparison is said to "lose" the debate.

Re: I am tired of those people not using the search function

Actually, the search on Internettablettalk.com / talk.maemo.org is a very frustrating thing. I have been around here for years and understand that searching via internettablettalk.com's website will dig up old entries before the cut over. And when you search via talk.maemo.org you will see the new entries since then.

Here's an example of how upsetting the search can be:
  1. Type "viliv" into the search from Internetablettalk.com
  2. Now type "viliv" into the talk.maemo.org
  3. You will see different results

I understand why this happened but noobe's would not. To help them, we should put that at the top of each sites search results.

Please move this to "community" since community is for "website and community discussion."

Jeez....the nerve...:D

Except noobs are extremely unlikely to ever come across the TabletTalk search. And most of them probably are N900-oriented and wouldn't get much value out of the Tablettalk posts.

The better solution is a good custom Google search as in my sig or, better yet, as Reggie has recently announced:
It's worth a bookmark.

(I know -- I repeated myself; I'll stop.)

Re: I am tired of those people not using the search function

Hi,

How about: When you start a new thread the search would do the search _before_ starting new thread (but after post or save msg button). And it would show best similar posts or threads to user asking "are you still sure you want to start a new thread?"

So we kind of make this search mandatory. Of course this doesn't work always, but may limit some duplicate threads.

It already does that in regards to thread titles... doesn't seem to help.

Damn. We should have search/some kind of 'AI help' for posts too. So that this search engine would have prevented me to posting previous post because this was generally known fact.

Re: I am tired of those people not using the search function

I'm afraid this is going to get worse. Over the next few weeks and months a whole pile of new people are going to turn up here.

And you know what? They don't want to use the search function. They want to ask their question, and have a human being answer it. I'm afraid the patience of the long term members is is going to be tried. And I don't think there's really any answer except weathering it until is subsides.

Oh, and I call Godwin, too!

So what is this thread about? How we hate people who don't know as much as us? Yeah, I think posts asking where the battery on an n800 is tend to be a little irratating but people who just shout SEARCH anytime someone asks a question is are quite a bit more irratating.

That's what i meant.

but this is what I expected and actualy wanted to happen, a discussion about the search function.

it shows that most of the complaints are a general problem of the site, like the community pages arent usable or realy slow due to server issues (they will be solved..),

Re: I am tired of those people not using the search function

As one who is a master of search, let me say that Maemo's Talk forums stink when it comes to finding an answer.

My first experience was trying to find out whether I should, as a normal practice, switch off my N810 at night or just let it go into standby and, if the former, was there any difference between using the menu to switch it off versus using the power button. Searching for 'switch off power' returns 42 threads with up to 272 posts in each for an answer which could (should?) be answered in a single sentence.

Another problem is the idea of a single thread to cover a general topic. For development, this works fine. The thread becomes a collaborative tool. But for a user with a question it becomes a nightmare. I am interested in Tear but the 0.3 release thread contains 1037 posts with the 0.3.1 thread adding 975 more. Is it any wonder that people start threads with specific questions?

Another n00b's thread title summed it up:"Tear install - Newbie is so confused. Which thread to use? "

Peoples, you know you can list results by post and not thread, right? You can even make that your default.

Maybe we need a Search Help thread.

To tell you the truth, I didn't know that.:o (OTOH, I almost always use the custom Google search of maemo.org.)

I think Reggie ought to make Results By Post the default. Or the option should show up more prominently, like when you use the big Search Box in the top right, it could have the options right there.

RevdKathy 2009-11-15 08:44

Re: I am tired of those people not using the search function

I was reflecting on this one.

Most of the threads coming up on repeat are fairly basic (they're newbies who haven't settled in yet). And we have a team of people wearing this 'greeter' sig, some of whom are also not actually very technical. I actually answered one of those threads yesterday - it was exactly the same as two identical topics on the same forum page. I just welcomed the poster, and offered him links to where discussion was already going on.

So if you see someone posting something basic that's already answered, just ignore it. Hopefully one of the greeters will get there - and be able to respond cheerfully however many times the question has been asked. It's part of what we're here for.
