Re: Orb.com

Haven't tried on the n900 (as I don't have one). But orb worked pretty well through the web interface on the n800. I was even able to stream TV to the default media player.

Can somebody try orb? It would be really great if I could watch live TV on the n900 using orb, not to mention the other media streaming.

Any direct link to a streaming media content?
It's very hard to navigate around trying to look for a stream video.

Re: Orb.com

I was hoping that someone would have both an n900 and an orb.com account and could report on how well it works. It makes heavy use of flash/ajax and does live streaming of videos and TV via flash or windows media. All this works quite well for me using Ubuntu, but I'd like to know if the n900 can handle it.

Well can you generate a sample clip with a link for public access?

Re: Orb.com

Looks like I can, although it will serve off my home PC, so I don't really want to post the link on a public forum or else a bunch of people might start watching it.

Can anyone willing to try it send me a private message and I'll give you the link that way?

I have an orb account, and i tried playing one of the movies via orb, it gets very slow...maybe because i had like 8 things running at the same time. I'll try to run it all by itself in a few, and see what happens.

Ok so i runned orb all by itself, and it worked fine. Just the only thing that concerned me wat i was unable to seek the video file (can't fast forward), and the video played smoothly but the pic quality was somewat bad compared to my monitor (its a dvd quality print on the computer) where as on the n900 its kinda "pixelated" (if that's a word :P)

Hope this helps!

I didn't select anything actually...i'm connected via wifi at my house (don't have tmobile 3g) and i just connect to orb, select a video file, and it plays right away with orb video player i think!

Re: Orb.com

++Very Good with flash and veiwed in mobile browser mode.
++Very easy to install for beginners
++basic functional media centre for maemo
++easy streaming and file transfer
++no linux knowledge needed

--Bit poor quality video with bad sound
--very buggy but managable

hope this helps. I find it fills a lot of needs media streaming wise, till better software appears on n900.

Quick install on PC then browse from remote browser.Very easy!

Re: Orb.com

I have successfully got good video quality running orb. While on the N900, look under the Orb settings, check the Winamp format (PLS). Now it will stream to the media player app on the 900. I do not know what format it is in though.

Re: Orb.com

Orb web interface:
Con: Video is on par with what youtube had 3 years ago if streamed.
Pro: If you want higher quality there is a download option right next to the view option on all media.
Pro: Setup on a home computer is mind numbingly easy.
Con: I have between 3-512kbps upstream and streaming content is unpleasant. (and if I'm running a torrent, fugetabaddit)

Pro: Orb doubles as a LAN media server and I can confirm that it works flawlessly with xbox360 and PS3

And that's about all I can think of.

Yeah , orb works well in webbrowser through flash (even TV streaming) but the quality is average.

Do not bother with ANY error message from the media player, it meant NOTHING. It basically tells you it is NOT playing, for whatever reason, no signal, no streaming, out of memory, wrong whatever, it gave the same error statement. Quite interesting.

The video is spectacular if you change the default setting. Default 160 kB/s is very pixelate, 320 kB/s getting much better. Whatever, I am using 640 kB/s. Video is really clear.

Orb/set top box will stream liveTV to N900. You do not need the HAVA box.

I must be missing something. I don't have a tuner card in my pc. even if I did, how would you change the channel on the set top box? i thought that is why you need the hava box??

bunanson 2010-05-07 14:58

Re: Orb.com

Umm...I think you may be right. The HAVA box can be used as a tuner as well as streaming. I have a tuner in addition to the have box. If you do not have a tuner on your computer, yes, you do need the hava box then. Meritline.com or newegg.com, they carry USB TV tuner, $30 - 50$, if you need one. Bottomline, if you have your own tuner card, orb will stream your TV signal. Changing channel is a totally different subject! Get TV streaming signal 1st, we then talk about changing channel. There are ways to change tv channels depends on whether using a setop box
