A1 - Mobilkom Austria: N900 for €299,- [even lower: €249,-]

Just saw today that the market leader here in Austria, Mobilkom, will sell the N900 with its "A1" brand contracts for €299,- (including taxes).

No information is available yet about the details of the contract. I assume the conditions will be similar to their current N97 (for €249,-) conditions: For that, you need a basic voice contract (€7,50) plus data plan (€10,-) plus one of their content packages ("Top" for €15,-) to achieve this lowest price. And, of course, it runs 24 months. You'd need the basic contract and a data plan anyway, but the content package is what hurts. It includes another GB of free traffic, but the other parts - TV and navigation - are mostly useless.

They say existing customers can get the device at the same price as a "my next" handset.

Re: A1 - Mobilkom Austria: N900 for €299,-

Thanks for the info! The content package would really hurt - I'll stay with the in-house competition...

I am not a heavy user of either phone or data and near WLANs most of the time, so, with bob4er+1GiB data package, I'll expect to have monthly costs of around 10€.

So 299+24*32.50 = 1079 vs. 600+24*10 = 840 (plus no contract obligations).

the newer "3" SIM cards won't work in the N900, so i guess they'll probably wait until this bug has been resolved in a newer firmware before they include it in their portfolio.

Hmm,.... I already wanted to preorder a N900. Thank you for the information. Perhaps its only some problem with UK cards? Perhaps the network code or so?

I think there's an issue with 3 SIM cards in Sweden too, there were some postings about a small delay for Sweden because they wanted the firmware upgrade in place.

no, it has to do with a newer SIM version. 3 in the UK, austria, sweden and i believe denmark are affected. these countries were specifically mentioned in the press release regarding this issue. though i am too lazy right now to search for it :)

Looks like it's available now from A1.net - at least you can order it from the online shop. Actually, the deal looks much better than benny1967 assumed. So you can get the device for €299 with a 24 month contract (€319 minus €20 "online bonus") and €14,50 per month including 100 free minutes and 1GB data traffic (that's €4.50 for the SMART 100 package and €10 for the 1GB data package). You get voice navigation for additional €6 per month.

In related news, the n900 seems to be in store at some Austrian online shops now.

Update: depending on I don't know what, the N900 link on shop.a1.net changes between "Neu bei A1" ("new") and "Demnächst" ("coming soon") between reloads. Don't know what that says about actual availability. Plus, there's a € 49,90 "Aktivierungsentgelt", so the one-time price actually is € 350, at least for new customers.

Re: A1 - Mobilkom Austria: N900 for €299,-

Thanks hns.

Really, the conditions aren't all that bad. I already have an A1 contract, so I could buy it for €269,- (!) (minus € 20,- if I buy online, so the actual price is € 249,-).

I need to use 11.500 of my bonus points for this (no problem with that) plus take one of several possible add-ons. I would choose a data plan instead of the navigation thingie, so that would be a 24-month-contract for € 10/month.

Having this data plan is probably a good thing, anyway, if you own the N900. So if I calculate it that way (=data plan doesn't count because I'd pay for it anyway), it's really only €249.

same situation here now. pay 250 for a QWERTY without warranty or pay 249 for the QWERTZ (which is what I want) with full warranty... ? ;)
wait for a 250-device endlessly or get the 249-device right away?

tough decision ;)

I'm also tempted. I had some bonus points from a previous A1 broadband contract, but I guess they went up in smoke when i canceled it half a year ago in favor of BFREE broadband. Oh well, it seemed like a smart move back then :)

i feel for you ;)

if i were an A1 customer, i would go for the €249 qwertz device instantly, but i don't want to switch carriers, and t-mobile.at doesn't seem to have any interest in the N900...

Re: A1 - Mobilkom Austria: N900 for €299,-

does anyone know how A1 brands the N900? I know it's SIM-locked, but are there any other restrictions? (e.g. can I update the firmware myself?)

benny1967 2009-12-01 21:10

Re: A1 - Mobilkom Austria: N900 for €299,-

Good question; I wouldn't mind the SIM-lock, but A1 does a lousy job providing new formware version for Nokia phones. Is there a mechanism in the N900 that could prevent me from updating to a new Maemo release (flash or SSU) if the carrier doesn't want me to? I had this situation with my current phone, needed to change product code etc. ... Does the N900 even have a thing such as a "prduct code"?

YES! finally! my current service provider is A1 too, and yes you can get it for 299 and 15€ monthly contract, the only problem is qwertz :((
i wonder if they'd order one qwerty for me if i charm the girl in a1 shop tommorow :)

btw benny where you found the 250€ qwerty one without warranty?

cheers

benny is eligible for the N900 developers/contributers program.

and yes, it's too late to collect karma for this program ;)

Re: A1 - Mobilkom Austria: N900 for €299,-

no. i called them yesterday evening and they said that while it's in the online store (thanks! that's why i called), none of their shops have them in stock. they expect the shops to have them next week.

i still went to the shop and asked about it. never trust the people at the A1 hotlines.... this time they were right, though, the guy in the shop confirmed.

i guess if i order online i won't be getting it any sooner than their own retail shops, will i? it still saves me €20 though...

can't believe they still don't have em in stock tho.. so much noise about it but still its everything so silent... :)

This is the official reply from service@a1.net:

danke für Ihr E-Mail!

Wenn ein Gerätehersteller ein Firmware Update bereitstellt, wird dieses zuerst einer umfangreichen Überprüfung durch unsere Spezialisten unterzogen. Vom Ergebnis dieser Tests hängt es ab, ob das Firmwareupdate freigegeben wird und somit für unsere Kunden zur Verfügung steht.

Dies ist, abgesehen von dem von Ihnen bereits erwähnten SIM Lock die einzige Einschränkung.
Translation: If Nokia releases a firmware update, it must first be reviewed by A1 service people. They decide if it's ready to be released to their customers. Like benny1967 said, they're not really good at this. I'll be buying an unlocked device. Btw, Amazon.at now ships the N900 to Austria as well (last time I looked that wasn't possible).

Hi,
Does anyone has experience on this?
How long does A1 review the firmware before they release the new one?

Today I was one step away from buying a N900 from A1 but I don't want to wait a few month for the update. Not for a Maemo update.

i have bought the n900 from a1. mine isn't branded. i get all the maemo updates as soon as they're released. (much sooner than the poor guys in the UK. ;)...)
