Re: Can anyone tell me what is the function of X-terminal application in N900?

x-terminal is the command line interface (a terminal basically). Most things in Linux can be done either through GUI (clicks and typing into prompts) or instructions from the command line..

E.g. to change folders in a GUI you can click open the file manager, then navigate to the folder you want.

To do so in the command line its cd /wherever/whatever

Re: Can anyone tell me what is the function of X-terminal application in N900?

Although many people scoff at the thought of a terminal, it can be a very, very useful thing to have.

Many computer professionals love it.

As do I.

Re: Can anyone tell me what is the function of X-terminal application in N900?

Can't help you regarding the OMD, but I do have some familiarity with the Xterminal. Its function - the same as an X-terminal on any other computer!

I often use it to SSH into my home machine, where I can pick up my screen session.

I also like to anagram in my spare time, and have written a console-based helper program for finding anagrams. E.g.:

talk.maemo.org forums = fake glamor/smut room

(Don't complain, it's nearly 3am, and that only took a minute to find.)

I need to OK with Qgil or someone what I'm allowed to say and show here, as I've done some pretty witty things in an Xterminal this evening, and would like to share them with the community at large.

The X Terminal is the command line; the gateway to awesomeness.

If you have to ask, you don't need it. Truly.

Re: Can anyone tell me what is the function of X-terminal application in N900?

^^^^ Like he said.

If you don't know what the terminal is, you probably don't need to worry about it.

The terminal can be considered as a way of getting at the "guts" of the os.

You can do many great things from within the terminal. You can also do a great deal of damage.

It will be my most used app just as it is on my laptop. It is an amazing tool for managing servers.

That may be the case but we need to just answer the question and let the users decide what they need. I'm seeing this too often now.

Many of the new heads are new to Linux, but not to technology and mobile hacking. Some people buy a device and learn the skills needed to mod and tweak it, as I and others did with Symbian. Don't underestimate the knowledge of users, nor the desire or willingness to gain advanced skills along the way.

I've been using Linux for a few months, and I say learn about terminal if you plan to do any tweaking of your device, since this is the easiest way to do it. To make a point of how powerful it is, remember this. Android is hacked just to give it this access, though it accesses a more simplistic OS architecture than Maemo by far.

I go into the mechanic and say, "I heard my car has a torque converter, what do I need to know about that?"

Mechanic: "Nothing!"

Moral: If the guy is going to start trouble shooting or rebuilding his Automatic transmission, he'll pick up something about Torque Converters along the way.

It wasn't necessary to show him that u know more than he do. this is not about challenge, but instructing. In this way you all discouraged him. This a shame for those claiming to KNOW.

Nobody was borned with it...

He's in a Linux forum.

Here's the options I have for him. You want to spoon feed every infant on the Planet that's your biz of course.

Options:
1) as mentioned, his asking the question means he has no use for Xterm

2) Google Xterm

3) Google Xterm and RTFM

That would help him more than any spoon feeding.

Give a man a fish, he eats for a day, teach him to fish, he eats for a lifetime.

Some starve to death if they don't get free fish everyday. In my world, that's called natural selection, I don't believe in Free Fish. If you ask questions in a Linux forum you had better have Googled a little and explain that the man page has you confused.

Welcome to Linux! Ask any questions you want, but remember, it's a sign of weakness!

Of curse we have to teach him, but if he doesn't ask questions how would you know the difficulties he has? the knowledge about a specifik thing is relative sir, compare to some other people you are a newbie, but nobody blamed you for any reason. Most of the questions here could have successfuly, been googled, but since "Maemo-Talk" is a place of discussion, they have been discussed. I'm not continuing arguing with coz u are are missing the point and making me missing the point too, since we are not answering his question.

You could probably learn neurosurgery using Google. I'd prefer users come here or a Maemo site than, say, Engadget or some supposed expert. We're the official knowledge base. Let's fulfill that by sharing it more easily.

I didn't know what the terminal was a few months ago. Now I use it daily on my PC, and can't wait to use it on my N900. I've found I do in fact need it, or at least want it REALLLY REALLLLLY BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD!

Bring me my s**t, Amazon.com! I'm losing patience. Don't even feel like blogging lately. Low morale by delay...

Without a wife he won't be able to prepare the fish for dinner. Nevermind the monkey tricks he must learn to get married to a wife. Teach the wife to cook, and the man to hunt. Both win. IOW, specialization is a good thing yet an individual cannot specialize in everything. Using Nokia N900 and Maemo 5 won't require X-Terminal. It is for those who prefer or require access to the device 'under the hood'.

You wrote that? There are already tons of console-based anagram finder applications available. Used them for ages even on obscure platforms and architectures such as BSDi and SPARC so I'm pretty sure they compile on Linux/ARM too. Their usability differs depending on why anagram is required, how advanced the flags/options are (e.g. filtering), dictionaries used, and resources of host OS (good dictionary requires more resources hence using over SSH may be desired). AFAIK there is none which uses a ncurses or X frontend but with bit of flag fiddling served me well through ages, and a bit of scripting (e.g. awk) does the rest. Could be put in sh script, contain simple dialog, and export result in GUI hence user would never notice console. The power of UNIX nowadays is having the choice between your preferred client. Local, remote, whatever architecure or UNIX flavor, X11 (Qt, GTK, native, Maemoized or not, blah) or console (cli, ncurses) or remote protocol (http, webdav, ssl+whatever). (Microsoft realized that, hence Monad. :D)

I hope you're wrong, or I'm doomed. I am a control freak, and I think I can learn and do anything. Maybe I'm special.

By the way, I already cook and hunt. I just want someone to teach her to shut the heck up! LOL :p

Pressing "q" should return you to the prompt. Type "help" for a list of built-in commands, then "command --help" for help with the specific command.

I did have to learn it. I had to read books, get the OS and Learn it. Here's how you want to learn it:

http://www.ornithology.com/images/Ba...ler_061705.jpg

It's a generational difference.

p.s. I wouldn't be learning Linux on my phone either.

Actually he isn't rude. He's just trying to tell you that if you aren't prepared to study this yourself by googling for five seconds and then reading for however long it takes, then the Linux (or Unix) terminal isn't for you.

Almost everything you can do there, requires extensive studies. What are runlevels? What is a startup script? What is a device file? Where are the logs? What is piping? How do you edit files with vi? What are kernel modules? What is the kernel? How do you configure the kernel? What kernel modules does VPN require? What is compiling? What are configuration flags? What is a bootloader? And the infamous "what are the basic linux commands"?

http://www.google.com/search?sourcei...basic+commands (try the first hit)

The whole linux community revolves around reading howtos, INSTALL and README files. The community feels it is wasted time to start making a list of things that are easier to Google. Most wouldn't event write this much, they would just paste the one search URL or even tell you to Google it yourself, because that is the right answer.

Thanx for clarifying Jay!

To the poster, for instance if you had goggled "Linux TOP" you could have read the man page on TOP and figured out hot to exit the app on your own. There's no shortcut to learning 'nix. It's a lot of reading and hard work, there's no way around that.

Hence the term RTFM!

The people on this forum or any other 'nix forum for that matter will bend over backwards for someone if they are willing to expend some effort. Most of us aren't into spoon feeding though.

You can do plenty of damage even without enabling root. But you can always reflash if you screw things up really bad. :D

Google "bash shell commands" or "bash commands" while you're researching this stuff.

Here are a couple references I like, but they are not for absolute beginners.

I read a Wrox book called "Beginning Linux Programming" that had some good stuff on using the command line.

I would like to see this community implement something like the Ubuntu Code of Conduct.

http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...&postcount=191

There is no benefit to making newcomers feel they are being treated rudely. We can argue all we want that we were not being rude, but if it comes across as rude or elitist, then maybe we have room for improvement. (Of course, the newcomers need to follow the code of conduct too, so it cuts both ways.)
