Xournal - What a sweet app

Hi,

I just wanted to give a shout-out to the Xournal devs. I have been using it as a scratchpad almost since I got my N810, but a buddy of mine turned me on to the "hidden" feature of Xournal...That being that you can markup .pdf files.

I had to fill out some paperwork that was in pdf format, and instead of printing, filling out, and scanning to send, I was able to fill out and even sign the document on my N810.

Maybe this is common knowledge, but I didn't know until someone told me.

Good job to the Xournal devs!

That's been in Xournal for Desktop probably since its inceptions.
Thanks Denis, the original author for that.

I use it quite frequently on the desktop for marking up PDFs. Glad to hear Xournal for Maemo supports this too! Thanks Aniello, Denis and any other contributors.

Let me also point out for those who haven't used it that not only can you mark up PDFs but you can then save the marked up PDF as a new PDF. I use it to take meeting notes and then save a copy on my desktop PC.

Of all the apps on my N810, this is the one that is the most useful. With other apps that I use I find myself constantly wishing they would do more or do what they do differently.

Of course nothing's perfect and every "thanks" has a "but".

But it would be wonderful if it could interface with Evernote.

I pretty much want Evernote integration in any note-taking apps, but at least you can save the PDF and then email it to your Evernote email address to get it saved into your account. One of the best things about Evernote in addition to the API.

Re: Xournal - What a sweet app

You can do that with Package 21 and the Share via Services button.

;)

I looked at the Xournal for Fremantle thread ( http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=31779 ) and I'm happy for all those with the N900. Xournal would be one of the first apps I would install and Evernote integration will be great for those users.

Unfortunately, I'm using it on my N810. I guess I'll just have to see whether I can save enough to upgrade before you can finish the Fremantle version and then port it to Diablo. :D

Thanks again for your efforts.

Good news. Installing now!

Let me know how it goes...

If you're updating from fremantle13, probably it won't start the first time you run it (no idea why, yet)... but then it works fine.

Great application! Can't wait to get the N900 and try it out. Especially if I can get it before next Wednesday, I can use it for notes on Thursday and Friday :)

Thanks!

Great app. Tested PDF. good ish! I can actually consider taking notes on downloaded PDF books while I'm reading them.

Re: Xournal - What a sweet app

Just a note here, just in case some people haven't fully looked into this feature...
When you annotate a PDF, it saves the annotation in the .xoj file, which is linked to the PDF. It does not actually modify the PDF directly - you have to export the .xoj + .pdf as a new PDF, via the menu. If you don't do this, you'll wind up submitting the original, un-annotated PDF, which is probably less than useful. :P Also beware that moving the PDF on disk will break the link to it from the .xoj file (IIRC).

Re: Xournal - What a sweet app

I think the only things that could make xournal better are:
1) Ability to select and move/resize text (similar to how windows vista/7 tablet pcs work)
2) A way to leave the shape recognizer on. For some reason it keeps on turning off while I write.
(note: I actually do use xournal on an n810 to take notes in class)

but other than that, I love it. I can take notes pretty decently on the n810 screen, but I don't know how well I would be able to write on the smaller screen of the n900.

Re: Xournal - What a sweet app

An added feature would be to write a note then be able to do an immediate "send" through email without having to "save" first. It would automatically save the file as "Attach01" and send in a PDF format.

Re: Xournal - What a sweet app

I was considering the idea.

When you hit the Share button, it'll ask you to Save the modified version and then it'll automatically export it to PDF in a temporary location and send that one.

Or ask if the user wants to also save the PDF version just sent...
Not sure.. what do you like best?

Aniello

PS: please note that when you're opening PDF with multiple pages, Xournal does process the pages in background while showing you the processed ones. This can slow down the tablet a bit and can take time.

What ever is the fastest. I would like to hand write a note and do a quick "send to email contact" of a pdf file without saving or naming the file.
