Am I the first to get a BRICK??

I picked up my N900 on Thursday and it was quite nice, but it kept cycling thru to the Nokia screen if I was doing something. It wasn't constant but happened a few times during each maybe 15-20 min session of playing with it. Well then last night I finally got time to add contacts and emails, and setup FB and other things and then I hooked the unit up to my Windows Vista computer and it kept going thru the DOTS loading mode on the screen (the screen that comes up after Nokia logo) well 30mins later it still was going and the thing would not show up on the pc and would not shut off. SO i took the battery out, then put it back in after I disconnected it from PC. Well then it got stuck on a DOT on the loading screen and never loaded up after that, many battery in and outs later i Gacve up and left it on the charger all night. Well woke up this morning and it was a brick, it would not even turn on, light up, do anything at all. I called tech support and the guy told me I was the first call they got about N900 problems, he said congradulations out of under maybe a possible 2000 people that had the phone I won the first brick. LOL. Well I called the NYC store and told them the tech said to get a replacement thhru them, but they were out and said it would be days before one arrives  so they took my name and number. Luckily a few hours later a female called back from the store and said someone canceled their order and I could come get that one :D . SO I got a new one again, and I hope I have no problems. When it was working, I was so happy with the unit, it was a shame I got to be #1 owner with a dead one.

Re: Am I the first to get a BRICK??

Yes but N900 is capable of simulating 12 bricks simultaneously without slowdown, in Flash!

Seriously - thanks for buying the brick, so that we don't have to (cross fingers)

Interesting. Had you installed any software before the problems happened? Any sudden unplug from your PC while transferring files or something? Just wondering.

Also, have you tried flashing the device before returning the unit? This is probably what the Nokia Care guys will do unless your device has a hardware defect. http://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_firmware

Re: Am I the first to get a BRICK??

It was never even seen by the PC, it just kept going thru the loading screen (dots going by) and never showed up as a device in Windows. Also never flashed it, once it did not power up the tech said forget about even bothering with it, only if it can at least try to power on would he suggest trying other options. It was having problems before I installed anything, basically i installed FB app, Forecaweather, and added contacts and email stuff. And it was working fine after all those for like an hour.

Wait..... someone canceled their order to physically pickup an N900 at the NY store?!? Who on earth at this point would do such a thing?

Re: Am I the first to get a BRICK??

pretty weird that happened as you already answered qgil about what apps you had installed, wonder what made it do that???
either you got an one in millionth unit that was bad or did you miss something to type that you had installed. did you download anything from the extras?

Re: Am I the first to get a BRICK??

Yeah they had even payed for it, they had the old receipt in the drawer, so who knows. Maybe someone far from the city that got an email about a pre-ordered one or something.

Yeah, surely they would pick it up and sell it on eBay for twice its value!

well thats the answer then,
you did not download anything from the extras. you have to manually open that on the download. you check the extras. those are the beta apps that is there for the development purposes to let others check the app. you might have accidentally clicked it. you sure that those are the only apps you had downloaded?

Na, and besides, it was doing a random shut down like I said before I even setup anything. I was just showing my friends the unit last week and it would recycle back to the Nokia screen like it rebooted or something. So from day one NOTHING installed it was messing up for sure. But it took 3-4 days to evolve into a brick :D

Every factory has a nonzero defect rate, Asian or no.

I had a Made in Finland Nokia 8260. The screws that held it together literally fell out one day after a year or so. I'm not going around saying the Finns make bad product. Stuff happens. (Somebody probably forgot to loc-tite the threads)

Don't worry, I had "class A" products from Germany, USA, Switzerland, Canada, Japan break down for no apparent reason. Sometime firmware, sometimes bad components.
If you make enough of the same thing, your bound to have some failing products. It's fact of life.

Pretty much the truth of the world. There is no such thing as a perfect mass produced item which has never failed or been victim of wear and tear. It's the main reason we have DoA and RMA :)

Probably some indian factory. There's always the indian solution: After it fell down while manufacturing, just get a new sleeve and try to hide your mistake.
Thumbs up for the indian! (y)

Naw, just joking, but I've heard about such things several times. :D

A large company ordered a million custom integrated circuits from a Japanese supplier, specifying a failure rate of 0.0001%.

The shipment arrived and comprised a hundred large boxes plus one very small box. Each of the large boxes contained ten thousand ICs.

And what was packed very carefully in the small box? Why the ten faulty ICs, of course.

This story is presumably apocryphal, but it does illustrate that some companies care about quality control.

I get the impression that Nokia is one of those companies, whereas of the two LG phones bought by members of my family both were faulty on arrival and needed to be replaced.

Roger

Hi,

I got my N900 yesterday and got it bricked exactly the same way as '01MSport'.

The problems started immediately after taking the phone out of the box. It goes to the Nokia screen and reboots in every five minutes. No need to dial PIN code every time though. Took me three tries to apply the wlan settings as the two first were interrupted by this unforeseeable booting. No applications were installed and it was not connected to a PC.

This morning, after during such a random boot, the system freezed totally. It stucks after the Nokia screen at dots loop with the second dot bold. Removing battery or a sim-card does not help. Always stucks at the same point.

I wonder could the initial problem be originated from an old sim card? I've told by Nokia Care center that sim cards no older than 3 years should be used. Mine was maybe 4 years old and I've had similar boot problems with the old Nokia 5500.

The device was bought from Nokia's Webshop, Finland.

Should I try to flash the system?

Cheers,
Rami

There has been faulty chargers. Could it be only empty battery? Charge with USB cable or an other charger.
