[UK] - giffgaff launches 25 Nov 2009 (was: giffgaff launches tomorrow)

For those in the UK looking for a network to use with their N900s (you lucky so and so's!), giffgaff launches tomorrow (25th November).

giffgaff is a community led MVNO. It's sort of run by O2. It promises competitive packages and community rewards. Apart from the stupid name, it seems like it could be a good mix with the maemo mindset.

giffgaff website.

Re: [UK] - giffgaff launches tomorrow

Take a look at this bit:

Quote:

In fact, when we launch, data will be free. Honestly, that’s because we won’t have had time to build the bit of our backend system to charge for it, and yet we don’t want to launch without data - so we thought we’d just let you have it. All we ask is that you don’t take the mickey, and that you do give something back by topping up, making calls, answering some questions, doing some marketing etc.

Data won’t be free forever. It can’t. We won’t stay in business very long if we just give stuff away! We will have to charge for it, once we can. So again, we’d like your views on what’s a fair and simple way of charging. Price per Mb? Price per day? Unlimited with a certain level of monthly top-up? Or something else?

Looks good, signed up when they first announced it.

Cant say it will do you much good in the south east on the N900 as its on the O2 network unless they give it QoS.

Cheeky, I know. But if anybody orders a SIM, mention my username (xmob). Cheers.

Re: [UK] - giffgaff launches tomorrow

I couldn't tell from the website if it does 3G data or HSPA data ("3.5G").
Does it? What speed?

It sounds like a nice stopgap until I can use my Three SIM, which will be cheaper but perhaps only because my partner is also on Three and we both got excellent deals which are no longer available :-)

xmob 2009-11-25 09:04

Re: [UK] - giffgaff launches tomorrow

It is my understanding that giffgaff will also support HSDPA. I will attempt to get a definitive answer.

Or simply ban the iPhone from use - lets hope Nokia win the case against Apple and they have to turn off the GSM stack! LOL

Re: [UK] - giffgaff launches tomorrow

I wonder what they call "taking the mickey" with regards to data usage?

The blog seems to suggest 100MB/day I could live with that if confirmed.

xmob 2009-11-25 16:13

Re: [UK] - giffgaff launches tomorrow

3Gb a month (which is roughly 100Mb a day) is what has recently been quoted.

Have you use the N900 with the giffgaff sim card yet xmob?
Seems intresting for data...

xmob 2009-11-25 19:04

Re: [UK] - giffgaff launches tomorrow

I wish! I haven't got an N900 (yet!).

But that is certainly my intention.

Flanbix 2009-11-25 19:11

Re: [UK] - giffgaff launches tomorrow

Ok.
Perhaps I will buy the N900 sim free and take advantage of the free data for 6 months.
I don't think i will have the patience to wait for provider offer with small contracts ...

xmob 2009-11-25 19:47

Re: [UK] - giffgaff launches tomorrow

Since the networks have started ramming 18 and 24 months contracts down our throats, I don't do contracts on principal anymore. Pre-pay (and 1 month SIM only) often has similar deals anyway.

Re: [UK] - giffgaff launches tomorrow

Just got the following back from giffgaff:
Quote:

Hi xmob

giffgaff provide 64KB USIMs so they can be used for in 3G networks (and also compatible with 2G GPRS/EDGE where there is no 3G coverage).

Also these SIMs can be put into 2G phones and will OK there too.

Hope this helps!
That's very good news.

Re: [UK] - giffgaff launches tomorrow

I read up on this giffgaff (what a name) sim earlier.

I like that they are open to suggestions as to what rates data should be charged at at the end of these 6 months.(EU reg's come to mind).

This outfit does seem to be a venture with o2 who currently charge £2.94 per mb so anything below that would be good. Data bundles could be introduced though instead of a per mb charge.

You must be aware though that the 6 months is from today so if you get a giffgaff card in January say then there will only be 5 months remaining..... that is how I read it anyway.

Re: [UK] - giffgaff launches tomorrow

It is from the launch so yes 5 months if you get a sim card for Xmas ^^

Quick note for those trying to get their giffgaff sim working, use

access point giffgaff.com
username giffgaff
password Password

Leave proxies off, this foxed me for a while. I typed in proxies from giffgaff.com and the connection refused to work.

And what about the QoS on giffgaff (O2) network? I have my Giffgaff SIM but I am waiting to finish my credit on my previous before activate and test it ^^

Been OK. I have been able to stream radio. A 15mb d/l didn't take too long ~20s, however youtube/iplayer does stall.

Got this up and running. Showing 3.5G connection and currently getting approx 1.5 mbps. Even better, all ports appear to be open meanging that skype, sip etc all work so free calls too! How long can it last?

I know that this is nearly a 1 year old post but that's me just finding out about giffgaff

so now that they are going to start charging for data would it be better if we were to give 3 a shot?

If you don't make many voice calls, get a Virgin Mobile Pay as you go SIM card. Data is £5 per month for 1GB.

GiffGaff (UK)

Has anyone tried heard of or used giffgaff as a mobile carrier in the UK?
I came across them this morning and one of the things that I noticed were ...

Quote:

Fair Use Policy for Data

If you don't have a goodybag, or you have the £5 goodybag then data is free, subject to the 100MB per day FUP.

If you have the £10, £15 or £35 goodybag (i.e. wherever we say data is unlimited) then there is NO FUP.

Unlimited - At giffgaff 'unlimited' means 'unlimited', so play fair and play nice, so it stays that way.
Their prices seem VERY reasonable and they use O2's network so its pretty good coverage

Quote:

£10 "goodybag" 150 minutes Unlimited texts Unlimited Internet
£15 "goodybag"300 minutes Unlimited texts Unlimited Internet
£20 "goodybag"600 minutes Unlimited texts Unlimited Internet
£30 "goodybag"Unlimited calls Unlimited texts Unlimited Internet
And calls to other giffgaff users are always free
From what I can gather a "goodybag" is PAYG and you buy whichever "goodybag" you want each month.

I moved from PAYG a good few yrs ago but apart from my brief stint on Voda with my N900 (disaster that was) I've always in the past 10 yrs been on O2

However I'm now seriously considering this giffgaff

Seems a pretty good deal

unless anyone knows better?

Ykho 2010-09-28 15:27

Re: GiffGaff (UK)

there are other threads about giffgagg on here...

anyway I noticed that the unlimited internet is only until the end of the year or something...then they start charging...

xmob 2010-09-28 15:28

Re: GiffGaff (UK)

I'm a giffgaff VIG and have been with them since day one. While I don't pay anything (perk of being a VIG), I can confirm that the prices are as good as they seem.

The free 100MB a day will end on 1st December but the goodybags offer excellent value for money.

giffgaff is a community supported network, so it fits in well with maemo/N900.

xmob 2010-09-28 15:29

Re: GiffGaff (UK)

Oh, and unlimited REALLY IS unlimited with giffgaff.

lew247 2010-09-28 15:30

Re: GiffGaff (UK)

Quote:

Free Mobile Internet:
You lucky giffgaff pioneers can even enjoy free UK mobile Internet up to the 1st of December 2010. After that date, mobile Internet will be charged at 50p a day (if you use less than 2.5MB/day you'll pay less than 50p and if you go over 30MB you'll be charged extra at 20p/MB). But all our goodybags that include unlimited Internet will continue including unlimited Internet after the 1st of December.
thats what it says anyway

Oh and I found this which beats every other network in the UK
Quote:

giffgaff will not be charging for calling 0800 numbers.

"A giffgaff goodybag is a mix of UK minutes, texts, and mobile Internet that lasts for a month. You can buy a goodybag by debit/credit card or from your airtime balance if you have enough credit."

does this mean that I would need to buy one every month? is there no way to direct debit?

That'll be fine, as they're really Unlimited.
Edit: unless its tethered use as they don't allow that.

I got a free sim, going to try it for a couple of months until my Vodafone contract ends.

Just to be clear, I'm NOT using giffgaff. I was just commenting on my provider's unlimited plan being really "unlimited", or at least for values of unlimited up to about 250GB/month.

Sounded interesting at first, but:

Quote:

4.8. All usage of your giffgaff SIM Card must be for your private, personal and non-commercial purposes. You may not use your SIM Card:

)(i) in, any other device including a modem connected to a PC.;

(ii) to allow the continuous streaming of any audio / video content,

I got my giffgaff sim yesterday, Unlimited internet and Unlimited texts (truely) was the deal breaker for me. I first thought they were going to start charging after 1st December, but thats not for the goody bags so its still pretty good.

You can have auto renew on the goody bags as well so its pretty much like direct debit.
