Eboard now available for Diablo (OS2008)
The port of Eboard to Diablo has now been completed. Eboard for OS2008 should now be available in your Application Manager or via the Maemo.org web site in the OS2008 downloads section. There is still more work to be done. If you see any bugs please report them to:

Re: Eboard now available for Diablo (OS2008)
Bruce!
I can't believe I'm just now seeing your post on this. How did that happen? :D Hey, good job on getting sound (only beeps though) working. So what's left on your agenda for Eboard and congrats on this latest release! |
Re: Eboard now available for Diablo (OS2008)
I've been using eboard for quite some time on my N810. Makes me wonder where I got it from. I guess directly from your site and not through Extras.

Re: Eboard now available for Diablo (OS2008)
You were probably playing with the old OS2007 port.
I have updated http://wiki.maemo.org/Chess#OS2008 to reflect the new situation. Thanks for your chess work! |
Re: Eboard now available for Diablo (OS2008)
I'm running eboard 1.0.3 and the Crafty engine.
I'll check out this new port as well of course. |
Re: Eboard now available for Diablo (OS2008)
I don't have much on my agenda for eboard yet. Here is my list so far in priority order:
1. Finish fixing sound. 2. Clean up GUI's. 3. When fullscreen button is pressed make chessboard as large as possible by maximizing vertical space usage. |
Re: Eboard now available for Diablo (OS2008)
Hey Bruce, is there a way to keep the sound channel open at all times?
Otherwise customed audio files are going to lag and start late if it has to boot up media player each time a new sound is to be played. Best of luck with the upcoming revision. :) |

Crafty In Xterm: root cd /media/mmc1 dpkg -i crafty_20.9_armel.deb Ukki's Scid port came with Togall, Phalynx and Scidlet but I haven't tried those yet with Eboard. |
Re: Eboard now available for Diablo (OS2008)
Peer->Play against engine-> Crafty
I believed it automagically shows up as an engine to select without any work on the user's end. You should also check out Ukki's Scid port. It's a pretty hefty package to install though. Cheers! :) |
Re: Eboard now available for Diablo (OS2008)
I forgot to mention, you can also get more chess pieces and boards with Eboard since the default ones sort of blows chunks. :)

Re: Eboard now available for Diablo (OS2008)
First of all, thank you very much for your effort to bring eboard into extras repository Bruce! :)
I made a little howto "Installation of eboard on maemo5" in the wiki. It seems to work very well in maemo5 too. Sound is working as well. It would be great if eboard also could be published to maemo5/fremantle extras repository. Do you think this would be possible, Bruce? If you don'T want to do this, maybe someone else with experience in pushing packages to extras is willing to do this? Thank you, jukey |
Re: Eboard now available for Diablo (OS2008)
Thanks! Yes, it works if you have a stylus and good eyes. I wonder how difficult would be to get at least the board using all the real estate possible.
Having the rest non-Hildonized is ugly but but between this and nothing, definitely this. :) |
Re: Eboard now available for Diablo (OS2008)
Any updates to post for us on Eboard, Bruce?
Last I remember is that you were working on getting a 480x480 chess board on the screen. |
Re: Eboard now available for Diablo (OS2008)
There seems to be a problem at least with a post-PR 1.1 release (haven't tried with a pure 1.1)
/home/user/MyDocs/.documents # apt-get -f install libesd0 Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these: The following packages have unmet dependencies: libesd0: Depends: libaudiofile0 (>= 0.2.3-4) but it is not going to be installed E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution). |
Re: Eboard now available for Diablo (OS2008)
I don't think Bruce has finished his work on getting full audio playing correctly.
I think all it supports right now is simple beeps. |
Re: Eboard now available for Diablo (OS2008)
I'm just following the steps to install Eboard in Maemo 5 described at http://wiki.maemo.org/Chess/Eboard
I could install it weeks ago but now I get this problem of dependencies. |
Re: Eboard now available for Diablo (OS2008)
It has been awhile since I posted info. I have been cleaning up a few other Diablo apps that I have written, and use all the time, and am almost done and ready to start back on eboard.
I don't have an N900 so I have no plans to port the code to Fremantle. I do plan on cleaning up all the GUI's. I will also verify the audio. I will also maximize the real estate for the chess board. |

Thank you Bruce!
Looking forward to your next release. :) |
Re: Eboard now available for Diablo (OS2008)
jukey, whatever was the problem is not there anymore. I just installed successfully following the stock instructions at http://wiki.maemo.org/Chess/Eboard
Thanks for the reminder! |
Re: Eboard now available for Diablo (OS2008)
There are two eboard .deb files in the repository. Which one do I install on my N900?

So this is the right one. The x86 Packages are for development on "normal" computers. Ciao jukey |
Re: Eboard now available for Diablo (OS2008)
jukey: thank you very much. Works like a charm!

Re: Eboard now available for Diablo (OS2008)
Brilliant for playing chess online. Just wish the board was a little bigger.

Here is a test I am making to enlarge the display area for the board. I have added a slider to allow the hiding of the last two rows of items. This is the easiest of the changes to make. The top display shows fullscreen with the slider dragged down to hide the last two rows. The bottom display shows the slider raised to display the last two lines. Let me know what people think. The are other possibilities that I can look at, this is just the easiest change to make.

Re: Eboard now available for Diablo (OS2008)
With the slider, it looks like you're only getting something like a 480x478 board instead of a full 480x480.
Is that correct? It's somewhat difficult to see with the images being as small as they are. Anyway, it's good just to see that you're still spending time on this. Have you put any thought into the layout for those of us who have screen rotate installed? |
Re: Eboard now available for Diablo (OS2008)
The display of the board with this is about 460 X 460 if one assumes each slider takes up about 10 pixels each.
I did not know about rotation. Can the N800 and N810 displays be rotated or is this just an N900 thing? In order to rotate I would need to redo the code pretty significantly. |
Re: Eboard now available for Diablo (OS2008)
Hey Bruce.
Dear god, don't try and attempt to code the rotation of the screen yourself. :) Search for sliderotate-diablo.install. Just click on the file and it will do the rest. I tried to upload it here but got an invalid file error for some reason. I use this along with the Advanced Backlight applet and it has always been good to me. The only thing is that you now will have to double press the power button to lock the screen but you can easily change that back by using "Mce edit" or editing this one file I forget. I mostly use the screen rotation for Scid and Garnet VM but I think it would also work quite well with your Eboard. |
Re: Eboard now available for Diablo (OS2008)
While working on the sound problem I was able to get it to work as is. One needs to enable sound in the Preferences->Sound GUI. Also to get sound on moves one needs to enable it under the Settings menu. There is an item called something like (Beep on Opponents Move). I don't have my N810 with me at the moment. I am not to sure why there are two different menu items for this. The entry under the Settings menu is defaulted to off. I am changing this to On in the next release.

Re: Eboard now available for Diablo (OS2008)
Were you able to get slide-rotate installed, Bruce?
I actually prefer Scid over Eboard but the problem with Scid is that the game clocks are poorly implemented. If there was a way to put digital game clocks above the Castles in portrait mode, it would be close to being perfect for me. See this post on two of the layouts that are possible with Scid. http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=376750&postcount=1 I asked the current author on this but he basically blew me off. To me, it seems like the best solution for Eboard would be in fact using two screens. matchbox-remote -next This could be a simple way of changing back and forth between the two screens. One screen for the game, board, clocks and other information, the second screen for the chatroom and messaging. Any thoughts on this Bruce? |
Re: Eboard now available for Diablo (OS2008)
Is there anyone that is very familiar with Eboard?
I was wondering if it were perhaps possible too add additional sound events. Some that are missing which would be nice to have are: Draw White wins on time Black wins on time Check Checkmate The sound options doesn't have these but I thought maybe they could somehow be added or programmed in the config file. Thanks ahead. |
