[Palm OS] Garnet VM Beta 5 Released for OS2008 and older tablets!

A new version of Garnet VM (Beta 5) has been released for the tablets!

Unfortunately, it seems they don't support Fremantle yet.

Find out more about Garnet VM here.

Re: [Palm OS] Garnet VM Beta 5 Released for OS2008 and older tablets!

Installed on my n810. No troubles so far. Can't really tell a difference. The web page only lists 'stability improvements' so I guess no new features.

This one expires May 31, 2010.

I have all but 2 of my apps on SD.
dl the beta 5 (1.0.4b...2008OS), click to install via AppManager.

After installation, all my apps are still there...that is a welcome change from previous update. now I am playing with it :)

will be real curious if you find any real advantage. I never did really even use my apps with the previous version due to degree of difficulty.

Details?

Regarding the upgrade, there is no choice. The current version expires in one wk and your apps wont run. There are several apps I cannot do without,

drug book
medical reference book
stopwatch
contacts (I use contact to store everything I need to remember, since contact sync with PCs, I have found out this is a very safe way not to loss data even if palm crashes)
and, of coarse, games!

I think my use of the Garnet VM easily amounts to 33% of my tablet

To me it reads more like a confirmation there will be at least yet another GVM update.

I can only say thank you, whoever wrote that at Access!

I second that! :)
I wish they would increase the dynamic memory heap upper limit to 16MB, there are many apps I tried that needed a little extra memory to run... maybe this way they would increase the compatibility percentage up to 95% :D

If you mean that the 2 applications you had installed "inside" GVM are still there, then this change means a huge improvement in usability. I could just keep upgrading GVM when there's a new one, instead of doing all the work again and again. Which I had decided not to do, if the next one came with an expiration date. Which it did. :)

It's a bit strange that some applications would need that much heap memory. As far as I know the T3 was the device with the largest heap memory, 12 MB. The TX, for example, had much less heap (4MB I think), even though it's a newer device. If there are applications that need more than 4, not to say 12 megabytes, how could they ever run on a real Palm?

javispedro 2009-11-25 12:09

Re: [Palm OS] Garnet VM Beta 5 Released for OS2008 and older tablets!

AFAIK the later Treos had a bit more of dynamic heap.

Is this build _really_ more stable or is just a placebo? I can repeatedly tap outside a modal window to make GVM beep consistently, which is something that used to crash / beep inconsistently in previous versions.

does this build run on the n900 like the previous one?

Re: [Palm OS] Garnet VM Beta 5 Released for OS2008 and older tablets!

I installed the Beta5 (1.04b) and then the Audible Player from the memory card. I was able to logon to my account and download an audiobook and play it. Then I closed and started it a few times and it didn't crash and reset the storage.

"At last!" I thought. Audible on my N810. Then a tried to start the calculator and it crashed and lost everything. I need to try installing to memory card instead of the internal storage. Still. promising so far.

GVM beta 5 updated/installed without problem on 2007He, pick the 2007 Os N800.

Edit: and yes, hotsync, todo, address outlook without problem, 770/20007He

12MB is still a 50% more than our 8MB limit, and as Javispedro pointed out already latest Treos used to have a larger heap...
On real devices there are apps to optimize and maximize the heap size to run heavier apps, but I guess that on a VM this could cause stability issues and given that we can run apps directly from command line with various tweaks I see no harm in having a bigger dynamic heap IMHO ;)

TA-t3 2009-11-25 18:10

Re: [Palm OS] Garnet VM Beta 5 Released for OS2008 and older tablets!

So, how big is the heap memory on the Treos? It would depend on the model I expect, and as far as I know the earlier ones didn't have much heap mem (2MB or so, as I recall).

This is wonderful news for me. I love the screen size of the nokia n800 and use Garnet vm every day for ebooks, splash ID, which I have not been able to replace with anything esle, List Pro, Handy shopper, other data bases, and much more. So you can see why I use my N800 every day. Now I can even use it for my banking needs. Wonderful :)!! Thank You Access!!!!!

Bun!
I didn't spend much effort at it but would be very grateful if you were to help me get this new version work as GVM was one of the main factors in my buying an n81p (even if it was used).
I have quite a few dollars invested in Palm apps from my NX70V Clie that I would be very happy to use once again including a couple hundred dolllars in ebooks and ereader. The biggest thing I ran into was my reg code kept getting denied.

1) n81p? you mean n810, I hope. I am not familiar with n81p.

To get gvm going:
N810/5.2008.43-7 (the latest Diablo)
a) dl gvm here, pick 2008OS and n810 or whatever your system is. You give them your email address, they will mail you the dl link; click the link to dl gvm beta 5

For people already have previous version of gvm installed, you can install this beta 5 on top of it, it runs just fine. Dont have to do anything special or uninstall previous version.

b) I dl into my winPC and winSCP into my N810

c) click the gvm beta 5, it will install via app manager.

d) once installed, go setting and adjust Storage heap Size to 16 MBytes WARNING: adjust storage heap will wipe out any installed apps. 32MB or 64 MB if you use large library. Once set, change will require re-installation of ALL your apps

e) Install apps via install .prc

f) hotsync via wifi works better if you have some memory, it does NOT sync well if you have only 10 MB internal flash memory, just a guess.

g) SD support, see Pushwall's above post, #27

h) useful links and place to get palm software

2) "reg code getting denied", dont worry, We have a specialist here who does not do anything but just work on reg codes on gvm, either post here in this forum or PM him, he'll help you. Addison, can you help please :) ?

3) Search for tag "garnet", "palm" will get you a lot of useful post

Hope this helps

bun

First off, setting Garnet VM to 64 megs was bad advice. The hell did you suggest that for bun? :D

64 megs will take a huge chunk out of your internal memory, initial loading time will be huge and the possibility of it becoming corrupted would worry anyone.

8 megs should be fine.

I hotsynced about 50 Skyscape med apps that total 700 megs on my SD card and still have over 4 megs left within Garnet.

If you know what you're doing, this emulator is amazing. If not, you'll be pulling out your hair like bun did a year ago. *lol*

Garnet generates two different device numbers for your tablet. One when starting Garnet VM and another if you go straight to the Garnet launcher (suggested).

Ether of these two device numbers aren't going to match your old Palm handheld and that's why your reg codes won't work.

I might have time on Friday night to help out but I'm by no means a specialist.

Best people to talk with would be in the following order:
Palmleavr
Javispedro
TA-T3
qwerty12
DFinch
Pushwall
bunanson
then me at the bottom. :)

Oh, Sorry. Looks like I overspoke, or mispoke here. Guess my joy got me a bit carried away!
Garnet doesn't really aid with my internet banking. I can do that on my N800 as is, but I truly need GVM to access Splash ID, without which I cannot get access to my bank accounts. I have all of my passwords to Everything in Splash ID, which is but one of the things that make GVM sooo important, to me! Sorry if my previous statement misled.:o

Re: [Palm OS] Garnet VM Beta 5 Released for OS2008 and older tablets!

OK, got it working...

Now at some point I could use help with the reg codes.

Other issues/questions:This may seem like I am complaining, but really just looking to see if anyone else has overcome any of these issues.

Has anyone been able to do anything with the portrait/landscape issue and allowing for fullscreen? In Ereader for example, I cannot get a combination of Landscape in fullscreen. I chose the TX setting for device hoping that it would allow for fullscreen. Not to mention the resolution is extremely poor. I realize the two devices are very different in their resolution so I guess I shouldn't expect much. Has anyone tried the fontsmoothing app to remedy this?

That's enough for now, will have more later!
