N900 Unexpected reboots

Hi all,
yesterday in the afternoon i get my n900.

I used it for two hours and it rebooted 4 times:

- The first time rebooted when i changed APN
- The second time rebooted when i installed sudo
- The third time when configuring skype
- The fourth loading weather forecast

The battery was low so leave it alone charging.

This morning i tried to update the weather forecast and boom another reboot.

I opened the terminal to look to /boot/bootreason to see the cause of the reboot, it contains: 32wd_to that means was the watchdog that reboots the terminal.

I also made a dmesg to see if there was some errors and boom reboots again.

Is there any way to further investigate the problem ?
May be an hardware failure ?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: N900 Unexpected reboots

I have had similar reboots. but for now, no reboots since 3 hours and have played with my device the whole time. what I did? -disabled 3g -radio.(at last, did also numerous other tweaks that didnt help) that came to my mind when device rebooted in exactly same place where I once called with my E71 and the line was very distorted. and symbian nokias rebooting because of the 3g-gsm jumps have been normal before.

I am truly hoping that it would fix the issue. I'll create bugzilla entry tonight if there are no more reboots appearing.

Thanks for your reply,
i set the phone to 2g only and it seems more stable, but when i connected the n900 to the pc the device rebooted.

This is not good. :(

Re: N900 Unexpected reboots

Sounds like N900 still has childhood diseases :(
I'm gonna wait with buying till this isn't happening anymore. Who knows if the bug isn't a hardware problem.

Re: N900 Unexpected reboots

I'm having unexpected reboots too!! I think the culprit is Mail For Exchange. Can you try disabling it and see if it stops rebboting?

I have no /boot/bootreason, by the way. Where can I find it?

famusc 2009-11-25 10:07

Re: N900 Unexpected reboots

Ok, found it: it is /proc/bootreason and not /boot.
I have 32wd_to too...

Re: N900 Unexpected reboots

Constant reboots for me also by 32wd_to hardware monitor. It's not rebooting when using charger so I think monitor is trying to save battery by rebooting device when something gets stuck consuming too much power.

Re: N900 Unexpected reboots

I was just about to post that I've had no reboots at all... And then it happened. Two times. This thread must be cursed.

The reason was different each time, sw_rst and 32wd_to.

Not using MfE.

Re: N900 Unexpected reboots

On two devices (both 42.11 and from the same batch) we had reboots when we connected to particular ad-hoc network. Otherwise mine is quite stable, so I guess that it is a network related issue. I will try to reproduce next time I'm at work.

Re: N900 Unexpected reboots

Do you have enough information to file a bug report? Could be useful to have it documented somewhere...

famusc 2009-11-25 12:10

Re: N900 Unexpected reboots

I've just had my 7th reboot... Always with 32wd_to. I'm starting getting really disaapointed..............

Re: N900 Unexpected reboots

I've also checked /var/lib/dsme/stats/lifeguard_restarts and it says:
/usr/bin/ohm-session-agent: 1

Anyone knows what it means?

mine contains:

/usr/bin/ohm-session-agent: 1
/usr/bin/hildon-desktop: 1

My device rebooted with this conditions:

- When no connected to charger
- Connected to charger
- Connected to pc
- On wi-fi network
- with no wi-fi netwrk
- With 3g cellular network
- With 2g cellular network (but with 2g is more stable)

Now the uptime is 3h and 42m without rebooting... with 2g cellular network.

Re: N900 Unexpected reboots

The Open Hardware Manager was introduced in the final firmware, maybe something there.

Re: N900 Unexpected reboots

Unluckily I didn't save all the necessary information, I will try to reproduce.

My unit is somewhere between the prototypes and the retail units (probably closer to the latter).
I had this reboots only in this one situation, the device is used rather heavily by me and it acts stable in other conditions.

Re: N900 Unexpected reboots

I'm not really sure how "the first batch" can be identified, but I got my phone from the NYC Flagship store the very first time they had it (last Friday) and mine is rock stable. I never had any voluntary reboot, I'm actually amazed at how stable it is ...

May I ask you what are your Connection settings, like Automatic connection and switch to wi-fi when available?

Connect automatically: Any Connection
Search interval: 10 min
Switch to Wi-Fi when available is on.

Re: N900 Unexpected reboots

I've has one unexpected reboot while I was playing music and trying to access a web page over a public wifi spot at a train station.

My battery was low, my charger wasn't connected and I had GPS enabled. Since then I've disabled the GPS and have not had the problem reoccur.

javajix 2009-11-25 13:38

Re: N900 Unexpected reboots

some minuts ago, I was writing an sms and then reboot, this was the device conditions:

- Wi-fi off
- Celullar network fixed to GSM
- No other applications opened
- gps off

/proc/bootreason says 32wd_to

/var/lib/dsme/stats/lifeguard_restarts says:

/usr/bin/ohm-session-agent: 1
/usr/bin/hildon-desktop: 1

Re: N900 Unexpected reboots

I hope these are sparse cases. The techies will be OK with this stuff (for the most part), but a lot of others buying this expecting high-end smartphone will be double slammed with lack of features they expect and this.

Mine will be in today, so not long to find out.

Re: N900 Unexpected reboots

That's strange. I've been using my phone to its fullest potential over the past few days and haven't seen any reeboots at all. The browser crashed a few times but that's about it in terms of stability.

I bought it at the NYC store.

May be a problem related to the sim card ?

Mine is vodafone italy 128k

Thanks. I'd really like to try out a newer firmware. It rebooted once again beacause of the OHM

Can you post your connection settings?

@javajix:
are your connection settings set to default values?

All default, the only thing i changed is:

- Cellular network fixed to 2g (seems more stable)
- Data connection: ask
- Apn: iphone.vodafone.it :)

With data connection you mean "automatic connection"?

Yes, may be a sim card compatibility problem, i'm using vodafone 128k sim, and you ?

Re: N900 Unexpected reboots

In finnish forums some people have reported loose simcard problems. Check your slot.

nokia onlne store finland.

e:3g -no effect
wlan -no effect
usb -no effect
gps -no effect

it could be connected to cpu stress. i've had a couple times mp3 fast repeat cycles without reboot and once device rebooted after that.

i've sent two logs wi crash reporter allready, reason was the same both times: (hardware watchdog aka) 32wd_to

I think you are right, before the reboot the system freezes, it seemed the cpu was at 100% and then reboot.
