N900 Microphone / Mic Issues: Dead on Arrival (DOA), Not Working, Intermittent Failures
 

Hey everyone,

Was very excited to get a N900 yesterday but right out of the box I noticed that I have no mic audio. I know the odds of this being a hardware issue are pretty good since I hadn't mucked with anything but wanted to see if anyone had any ideas.

On-board mic audio does not work for any application. (Phone, video, voice recorder) I can use the included headset and the phone switches to the headset profile works like a champ. When I say the mic doesn't work I mean there is NO audio present what-so-ever. (No hum, noise or anything. Total silence.)

Fired up alsamixer to take a peek and I do not seem to have a capture device? Insert the headset and then PGA switches to capture and goes to 40.

Any ideas? Also any advice on who I should contact first? Nokia or Amazon. If it turns out to be truly broken I'm sure it's going to be a long wait for a replacement. So much for getting it early.

Guys,

Received my N900 this morning (finally) but the microphone is not working ie. The other person on the call can not hear me.

Anyone have a similar problem or heard of this problem before ?? searched, but nothing.

To resolve Ive tried the following without any luck:-

- Flashed standalone
- Flashed NSU
- Call recorder software does not pickup anything up
- Phone works with headphones
- Mute / unmute doesnt do anything

Annoyed or what. Any suggestions ? Thanks

This sucks, see there is another user complaining about this in a recent thread.

Mine works, and for comparison, alsamixer shows: Master and Capture (without headphones that is).

That's why I prefer to buy in store: if it doesn't work I just return it immediately and get a new one on the spot.

dnastase - Thanks for the info. Can you do an alasamixer -c0 then tab over to Capture and tell me if you have a capture device there? (Says capture in red under it)

Thanks for the thread merge - sorry to hear others having the same issue but hopefully that means it's not hardware.

Its looking like a good few people that got their devices today have had microphone fails.. This is bad new. Maybe Nokia rushed on the production line to get the devices shipped..

Oh bugger! Looks like Nokia still orders mic's from the same manufacturer... me thinks 5800 used to have same kind of problems with the first batch :(

That was earphone not a mic on 5800, believe me, i had that problem.. ;)

From what I've read its only the UK's first batch that is having the Mic problem not seen any other Country having this..

I have sound out of phone music etc but mic not working.

It doesn't say CAPTURE under any of them. I have:
- HP DAC 0
- HPCOM DA
- PGA

Put on charge straight away about 1 hr after but still no go:confused:

Not too long ... but I turned it on and continued using whilst it was still charging.

What makes you ask ?

I did call nokia to see how fast of a replacement they could offer if we can't resolve the issue ..... Got quoted 2 - 3 weeks. I hope we can sort this.

Thinking the first charged screwed it up.
Maybe because it's been shipping for so £!$!^ long

I'm going to turn mine on first thing tomorrow and check the batty can make calls

if mine is defective tomorrow
i'm just going to return it and get full refund

so here's our journey so far with the N900

pre-order -> wait -> more wait -> order cancelled by nokia -> re-order -> wait -> more wait -> order decline by bank -> re-order -> wait -> phone in hand but can't make calls

great, if mine is defective as well, i'm going to ditch Nokia
i had the N97, that was a big disappointment, really look toward for the n900 and now this

so far from what i can tell
people who are not having the mic issue did not charge their device before turning it on for the first time

Wow, that's messed up. Static discharge or something fried the mic?
Yeah, I charged plugged my phone into mains before turning it on for the first time, but then I only charged it for an hour before I had to head out. But no mic issues here.

is this confirmed. i still have to get home and open the box, if this is the case i will start my phone, drain the battery and than charge it.

Dont drain the battery the entire way - that seems to lead to a possible problem with being unable to charge.
