N900 Screen DOA?

Hi to everybody, i am relatively knew on this forum and have been more of an observer.
Finally i received my phone this afternoon, full of excitement . I switched it on straight away and noticed my screen remained blank and black, absolutely nothing apart from the blinkin light and the usual NOkia sound. Obviously i took off the screen protector, took out the battery..nothing .. blank.. really disappointed after so much wait !! not the best first impression.,,:(
Any advice would be appreciated..cant play with my new gadget>>>

It may be that you would need to charge your device as many times they leave with just enough juice from the factory to boot -but not always.

There should be a note within your Quick Start instructions towards a charging time; but if not, put it on the charger for 2-6hrs, then try operating your device and see if that gets you going.

Re: N900 - Yes, it sucks.

perhaps i should charge it for a few hours and the see if the thing starts up properly and the screen comes on. Have a feeling something is not right ::(

seems like DOA. Unlucky. Faulty hardware or mishandling by carrier. Lets hope just a battery fault. Where did you order?

are you sure your charger is really charging and it's not faulty?

So, from the sound of it, your N900 is fully booted (not just in "charging mode") and the screen is locked. If you use the unlock slider above the headphone jack, the LED should go dark for a minute or so while the screen is awake. Once it automatically locks again, the LED will switch back to green.

Have you tried removing the battery for several minutes? A "rest period" without a battery has been known to help previous Maemo devices recover from some odd conditions.

Have you tried reflashing? No guarantee it will help of course, but it sounds as though your phone boots up enough to do so.

Is there any sign that the backlight is on at least? With the backlight on, even a fully black screen on the N900 will be lighter than the surrounding bezel.

I'm not sure what help it is, but with the N800 at least, if the screen cable was physically disconnected, the tablet wouldn't boot. Instead, it entered some a diagnostic reporting mode that flashed the LED in a distinct pattern. If the N900 is similar to the N800, your phone isn't suffering from a disconnected display cable.

The n810 when it is charging takes a very long continued press to switch on. Did you try pressing the power button for a loooooooooooong time like half a minute...

Hi Sjgadsby, for the last couple of hours i tried everything, taking the battery out for a while and then rebooting the device. It does the same thing , the sound is there but absolutely no display, its completely black.
The battery seems to be charged as the green light comes on, i also tried an older charging cable and no difference at all . One thing i havent tried is reflashing the device as I am not sure how to do this with the N900 , forgive me I am new to all this .So I am at the end of my tethers on my first day with this supposed to be my new "tablet computer-phone" :(

Sorry i just read that your device switches on but the screen is blank. That solution is to switch on the device.

I think your only option for now is reflashing. You should find a how to in the nokia support page...

It may be impossible to do blindly (esp since you might have to get past the setup screen), but it would be cool to try to get the external TV output turned on.

Sorry for you, mate :( Here in Germany we are still waiting to get ours shipped, anyway :(

As it is making the Nokia Sound, I would really fear that it is DOA :( I think there is no other way but give it back or get it repaired.

Best regards,
Corwin

Re: N900 Screen DOA?

Update on my dead screen . I went to the London Flagship store to see whethe some of the staff could help me. One guy was very helpfull and showed enough interest . He played around with the phone but got stuck to with no idea what to do and suggested to return it to Nokia Uk . s
shame they couldn't take it on right there and then .

So now I have to wAit for replacement , god knows whole long that will take from Nokia Uk . Apart from my broken exitement I still have the hunger for a new n900 , just hope it'll will worth the effort . :)
