[Palm OS] audible works great
I installed audible today into garnet. it works great. I even setup the memory card so that I can download via audible air or just move files to the new audible folder on my memory card. Then I noticed in the forums that people were wishing they could get audible to work. Are those posts out of date, or did I stumble on how to make it work before I knew I was not supposed to be able to?

Re: [Palm OS] audible works great
I also got Audible running, but keep getting crashes that wipe out all my applications and audiobooks. How did you configure Audible Air to store the books on the SD cards?
My other issue is that the player only handles the format 3 files and the sound quality is just not as good as the format 4 files I can use on my N95 If only Nokia would write a native maemo Audible client. |

Re: [Palm OS] audible works great
I am not getting any crashes except when I turned game sound to off, which made audible not work at all, not just be quiet.
I used the simple installer available from http://audible.custhelp.com/app/answ...0palm/r_id/166 it is great. Just a little prc file that you can either install (my preference) or just put in the Palm/Launcher folder on your sd |
Re: [Palm OS] audible works great
Wow, Audible FINALLY works on the N810 and presumably other tablets. Thanks, Garnet!

Re: [Palm OS] audible works great
Just checking, is this true....We can now download audible to our sd card, install it through gvm, and then we can listen to our audible.com files, and there will no longer be a crash when the sound plays? Wow, if this it found by others to be true, then that is SOMETHING!
So tell me again, please. Is this really true? |
Re: [Palm OS] audible works great
it's true for the N8x0 and 770 devices, but not the N900.

Re: [Palm OS] audible works great
It is SO close on the N900. It looks to me like there is some simple problem with file locations or permissions and if that was fixed, the whole thing would work. You can log on to the Audible system and the system apparently accepts you. You can download any program that is available for you. But after you have done that, the moment you try to actually play the program, you crash. It looks to me like the place you download to won't actually accept files, which is what I am saying about permissions problem. But I don't know where it is trying to put the files, so I can't check this.
After it accepts your name and password, it ALWAYS asks for your name and password the next time you try -- so it isn't able to actually keep them. Can someone who understands these things better take a look at this? It is so so close to working. |
Re: [Palm OS] audible works great
@geneven:
It does seem so close indeed. I first tried installing the simple Audible player, but it always crashed after installing. I just tried installing the Audible Air version from http://download.audible.com/audibleair/otaman.htm , and it installed fine. (I had to exit after installing, so that the icon in the Garnet window is changed from that of the installer to the icon for the Audible player. When I launched the VM for the second time I saw the Audible player icon.) As geneven said, Audible opens fine, but when I tried to play the free sample, the VM crashed. |
Re: [Palm OS] audible works great
Emulating an entire operating system on a mobile device to playback legitimately purchased audio is hardly a tenable solution.

Re: [Palm OS] audible works great
If it is "hardly tenable," why does it work on the N800 and N810?
Your ideology appears to make you unable to judge the facts at hand. You appear to be saying that it is impossible to do what has already been done. |
Re: [Palm OS] audible works great
Does anyone have anything new on N900 and Audible.com files?
I called Audible.com today and they are getting requests, but nothing from them yet... |

Emulating systems for games is cumbersome enough, but is reasonably necessary because the content includes actual code/logic specific to a given platform to make the interactivity work. There is no legitimate reason that an audio file should ever be locked to a specific platform, it's a series of data points in time, and nothing more. An audio file is essentially 2 line graphs. The only reason an audio file is ever platform specific is because the vendor you received it from sees all their *paying* customers as potential criminals. |

The upshot of this is that we should really be bugging Nokia rather than Audible. I started a thread about this a while ago but it didn't get any traction. |
Re: [Palm OS] audible works great
But there must be some reason why it worked for the N800 and N810 and doesn't for the N900. It's the same emulation. I think we should bug people here -- why isn't it working? Can someone come up with a reason? There is a reason, I guarantee it. It's not because N900 is a higher number than N810. Emulation basically works on the N900. Why not Audible?
Discussion about the philosophy involved is just a copout. Does anyone in this learned community know, or is anyone willing to investigate? It would cost nothing to try out the programs involved. |

And I do agree with go1dfish--emulating an entirely different platform just to play a media file format is not the "right" long-term solution. But if it's all we have, it's what we do. I'm running ToastTimer under Garnet VM and thankfully it works fine. |
Re: [Palm OS] audible works great
Thanks for the reply, bgrigor!
Well, maybe Garnet will support the N900. I know I personally found Audible totally unhelpful and somewhat mendacious when discussing problems like this with them. They either profess interest or total incomprehension that anyone runs anything Linux-like, but in either case they end up doing virtually nothing. I was their enthusiastic customer for about six years, but I'm surprised they are still in business. I did run across a couple of well-informed, nice people at Audible, but they were in the minority by a long shot. ** **Besides, they completely ignored my job applications! |
Re: [Palm OS] audible works great
AudibleAir is failing for me: :(
"No Deserializer found to deserialize a ':UserId' using encoding style 'http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/encoding/'. |

But I had been able to play them on my N900. What does this error message mean, anyone? |
Re: [Palm OS] audible works great
Answering my own question: It seems that this has happened to other people with other devices over the years, and the solution could lie in a new version of Audible Air. I'm checking further and will report back if I solve it.

Re: [Palm OS] audible works great
Solved!
You need to install new software (new this year) and it is VERY DIFFICULT to find it on the Audible site. So just go here to download the software to your N900 and then install it as you would any Palm program (choose the Treo option): http://download.audible.com/audibleair/ota.htm |
