No. To get yahoo imap on your phone, you would need to upgrade your yahoo account.

No you don't
You can use Nokia Messaging. Free Yahoo IMAP
Yahoo made a special IMAP server for Nokia Messaging

Setup Yahoo email at Nokia Messaging - http://email.nokia.com

Signin to Nokia Messaging on the N900 and you're good to go with Yahoo push email.

Best free email provider on the Net! Just one feature that I miss is 'folders-in-folders' :)

Has anyone actually got Nokia messaging to work on the N900?

When you get the link sent through as a text, the website won't autodetect Maemo and only gives you the choice of Symbian OSs to install.

Can anyone advise here?

You don't need to get a link as text from the website.
Nokia Messaging already embedded in the N900.

Tap 'New Account' and choose Nokia Messaging from the list.
Then just signin to your Nokia Messaging account and you're good to go.

I got mine working fine by doing that.

It isn't showing up in my accounts list. I've been trying for a week to figure this out, but no results. How are you getting to it, and what country are you in? I'm in the US.

Im in the US chris, it seems what you have to do is:

On n900 click email,
click the email title bar to create a new acct
new acct then next
then you'll have an option to pick a provider, click the drop down box under Service provider, then select nokia messaging, next
then type in the credentials for your email acct, ie. (gmail = yourname@gmail.com
pw=gmail acct password
next then finish

And Thanks Venom, i posted in another thread asking about this a half hour ago. cheers!

Re: yahoo - push webmail to n900

My other question is, I initially set up my gmail acct on my N900 before hearing about this nokia messaging, now that i setup this messaging, should i delete the gmail acct i created initially? Will it intefere with nokia messaging? Will i have double emails?

You know, it kinda sucks that they dont tell you this is a trial until after you signup and then there's no price of whats it gonna be after the trial period. wth o_0???

Re: yahoo - push webmail to n900

It is definitely *NOT* what we want.
Choosing "Nokia Messaging" as email provider is just generic imap4 setup. It *WILL NOT* push.

Re: yahoo - push webmail to n900

Actually IMAP does have an e-mail push facility. The feature is called iDLE. If the N900 mail client has the capability and the IMAP sever also has this capability, you have e-mail push. So the $64,000 question is, does the N900 mail client support IDLE?

IMAP Idle for Push Email

Many modern mail servers support the IMAP Idle feature, which allows your email client to monitor an inbox. Sadly Modest on the N900 has this feature disabled for power reasons.

actually it does as I have sent a few test messages last night. picked it right up, delay of about 30-40 secs after pressing send. The question really is, how much is this service after the trial period? and how long is this trial period?

Re: yahoo - push webmail to n900

i doubt that it is a trial period..i'm sure since the device being a premium device, nokia includes the cost of nokia messaging in the cost of the device...again i have a pro account of yahoo mail and get 0 spam yes ZERO spam, unlike someone who said he gets viagra emails, so i can setup a normal pop with 15 min refresh..its pretty ok..20$ a year cheap and fantastic...better than gmail

Re: yahoo - push webmail to n900

it is a free trial anywhere there is no branded carrier offering. if a carrier in your area starts offering an Ovi Push email offering, your trial no longer works, and you'll need to get it from the carrier

Chris, are you using the phone with a sim card inserted? My N900 didnt show Nokia Messaging when there was no sim inside but after I put a sim in, it shows up.

christexaport 2009-12-07 14:25

Re: yahoo - push webmail to n900

Yes. I'm using the device SIM free. I'm boycotting the carriers at the moment. I do use a personal hot spot from a carrier, but that will end soon too. (Cash is also boycotting my wallet...) But I reflashed my firmware and Nokia Messaging now works. So no SIM is required.

Re: yahoo - push webmail to n900

sorry for being an idiot.

but exactly how does one set up email on the n900?

i have a yahoo email address.
i have registered my number with the nokia push-mail service, and recieved the text.
i have not done anything with the text because the n900 apparently already has the software installed.

but, whenever i try to set up the email on the n900 i get the following message, regardless of whether i select IMAP or POP when i input the details.

"Unable to connect to pop.yahoo.xx. Server name or port number may be incorrect."

"Unable to connect to smtp.yahoo.xx. Server name or port number may be incorrect."

exactly what does one have to do?

Re: yahoo - push webmail to n900

Nokia messaging ins already on the N900. When you create your account just select the service provider is Nokia massaging. no need to go to the website. it will then ask you for your email address of your account on Yahoo and its password. Thats it.

done that, get the errors listed above.

i'm doing something wrong, and i have no idea what.

hmm something is wrong as it does not normally ask you for the server details unless it does not know the service provider.

not sure if the issue is that you have a paid service, and you have different server addresses.

here are the ones that I have found

Yahoo Mail offers standard POP3 access for receiving emails incoming through your Yahoo mailbox, by using your favorite email client software. To setup your email client for working with your Yahoo account, you need to select the POP3 protocol and use the following mail server settings:

Yahoo Incoming Mail Server (POP3) - pop.mail.yahoo.com (port 110)

Yahoo Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) - smtp.mail.yahoo.com (port 25)

POP Yahoo! Mail Plus email server settings

Yahoo Plus Incoming Mail Server (POP3) - plus.pop.mail.yahoo.com (SSL enabled, port 995)

Yahoo Plus Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) - plus.smtp.mail.yahoo.com (SSL enabled, port 465, use authentication)

Re: yahoo - push webmail to n900

it is a perfectly standard free yahoo.ca account.

does the "title" of the account matter in the n900 email setup?

which service (IMAP/POP) should i select to get push email, presupposing i actually manage to get it working at all?

if there is a problem, it is probably me not understanding the protocols of email clients.

regards

I think yahoo mail's pop3 services is not free . Then I want to add my yahoo mail to NM but I can't log in email.nokia.com

yahoo does not push email. The push is done by Nokia Messaging. Nokia servers poll your yahoo account and push you the emails when they see them. Its all transparent and magic. But works really well with my Gmail account.

Sounds like you are in california?
next step is probably to try normal non push emails. when you create an account on the N900 choose other and put n your server address details. Report back if that works.

Re: yahoo - push webmail to n900

reading the n900 email wiki, i realised that i had missed out the service provider.
http://wiki.maemo.org/N900_Email_Options

however, i have a UK n900 and a yahoo.ca email address, and the default list of providers only includes:
yahoo.co.uk
yahoo Mail!

when i set it up with the latter, i get the following error message:

"unable to connect to imap.n.mail.yahoo.com. Server name or port number may be incorrect"

any ideas
