Planning to buy the N900
 

(Incase you dont want to read confusing stuff since i suck at explainin things when it's a longer story just go to the bottom of the thread)


Now thing is, alot of people say that the Nokia n900 isn't a consumer phone and rather a "Internet tablet" as some prefer to call it. Whatever, it's a phone to me, lemme be ignorant on that part atleast <_<

But yeah, thing is that it seems to be directed at developers the most, so i'm confused as to how much "useful" it is to normal people who know nothing about developing stuff.

Often when i buy a new phone i buy them considering how good i think they are, and what it's design looks like ( the phone and the visuals in the system, as in what i see), so i end up buying something thats appealing to the eye (so i dont really like all those Sony erricson models that look almos the same with some weird modifications on the way it looks)

But yeah, i'm jumping from over from an Iphone.
Not the newest one.
I really dont use to many programs and apps, i mean yeah i downloaded some stuff and use them when i'm boredm but mostly i just talk, send texts ( i have NEVER used mms <_< ) and surf on the internet alot.

So if i just do that, wouldn't the Nokia n900 be more than enough to fulfill those things?

One of the other phones i considerd is the HTC HD2 cause i think it looks cool -_- ( yeah, i always go after stuff like that, and most likely never use more than 50% of the phones functions)






So in short, i'm jumping over from an Iphone.

Never used to much besides:
-internet ( surfing on the net and facebook and stuff)
-talking
-texts
-music ( listen to music ALOT)
-watching videos
-gps(once in a while)
-a few other weird random apps

and like i said, i have never used MMS before :-/

I'm either going for the Nokia n900 or the HTC HD2

Would like some opnions on what to go for (they are both great imo, but personaly i've wanted the nokia n900, but if it's not meant for consumers it will be the HTC i guess)

All I can say is prepared to be disappointed from coming from the iphone re the music player. The music player on N900 is a big. m-e-h. Also, I don't believe the N900 has hardware decoding of MP3 so you won't see same battery life you would with iPhone or iTouch in that arena.

There are some other quirks with ID3 tag sorting and playlists which you will have to get used to.

That said, otherwise, the N900 is a really good phone, and it has your first 3 points covered, easily.

From my own experience with the N900 in NYC, compared to the iphone, the GPS blows big chunks, it is slow to aquire a signal - upwards of 5 minutes, which is just a joke.

Just be aware that while I really like the N900, it is missing the polish you have grown accustomed to while using the iphone.

I tried to get an hd2 from o2 but was let down but then came across the n900 and have ordered. I decided that the hd2 was massive and has quite a few problems at the moment. The n900 looks good and has alot of functions and im sure there is more to come. Also nokia camera will be better than hd2. Im sure it will be great straight out of the box.

I heard a few bad stories about the gps but i have also heard alot of good ones saying it connects in seconds.

I've had the N900 for three days:

* GPS works fine for me. In fact, without me knowing it, it's been always on. It was only when I looked at my geo-tagged photos that I realised that it was tagging my *exact* location.

* Re MP3s, poster was right re interface. It can be most generously described as functional but boring. That said, I haven't noticed any battery life hit from playing MP3s.

* Web browsing: this device will change your life. Really. On the iPhone, I would use the web when I had a specific thing - a cricket score, or whatever - to look up. With the N900 I surf for fun. That, to me, is revolutionary.

* Videos: so far it's played randomly downloaded xvids and .movs without problems. Screen quality is excellent.

* Contacts app. Pretty poor. But I do all my organising in Google, so not too big a deal.

* Phone. Best bit is Skype integration. Very cool to be able to route calls over Skype when that is the cheap option. I have terrible cell reception at home, and the ability to pick up my phone and make calls from my phonebook over Wifi over Skype is pretty awesome.

All-in-all, still a little unpolished, but highly recommended.

Well regarding the music player.
All i ever basicly do is set the setting on repeat, and listen to the same song like 4-5 times and just change song, i dont have different playlists of certains songs either.

And as long as it's battery can life a good while ( maybe close to as much as on the iphone while listening to music? if i'm not wrong they did say they wanted the Nokia n900 to be able to last a very long time while using lots of things at the same time)

And the gps, i dont intend to use it as a gps for navigating a car from one country to another, it's usualy just to see where a certain street might be in a town or in what direction'ish, nothing big and fancy either.

And in the end, i am also thinking about keeping my iphone as an mp3 player or something, like, have the iphone for music, videos, and games, and the nokia n900 for the other stuff

EDIT:

I mean one of the bigger things that is a factor when i buy a new phone is "Do i like the design and feeling it gives off or not?"
i mean i mostly just use all the basic stuff that most phones can do, but want it to be appealing and handy/functional ( and like i said, all those ugly *** sony erricson variants of a model are ugly, althou their X10 looks nice, but never really got the big thing about the android OS :-/ )

As long as the music quality is good(maybe someone will tell us) im sure someone will come up with a better app for organising/music playing.

Music quality is just fine. The speakers are a little small, but as good as any you'll get in a tiny device. The music playerhas an interface and playlist system which consumes the private parts of an equestrian beast by vacuum of the mouth. I am assured better music player is on its way. I can only hope soon.

From your requirements, I am confident that you will be more than pleased with the N900.

It is not true that the N900 is "not meant for consumers", I don't even know where that myth came from. It is not for everyone, but it is targeted at conscious consumers who know what they want and perhaps also appreciate its openness to modifications (i.e. the kind of user that is likely to run Firefox).

A lot of effort has been put into making the N900 a user-friendly device that "just works" in all essential matters.

how did you order with o2 ?

i haven't seen the phone with an 02 contract anywhere !
