Can we expect IMAP IDLE on n900?
Are we going to be able to use imap idle on n900 in the next update?
I just need that instant push :-) |
Re: Can we expect IMAP IDLE on n900?
Is this what S60 devices already have? On my old phone I can leave the IMAP malibox connected and will receive any emails as soon as they arrive. If that is what your talking about then I seroiously hope so because I havnt beenable to get a reliable mailbx connection so faron the N900.
What is you current email running like on the N900? What problem do you have with the current set up. |
Re: Can we expect IMAP IDLE on n900?
right now imap idle is disabled.
Yes basically it is a push email implementation by imap. Google supports it in Google Apps and Gmail. It is a simple way to have a push email notification |
Re: Can we expect IMAP IDLE on n900?
We don't have it already? :( That's about the most important IMAP feature on a resource limited device, and should be implemented by all decent mobile e-mails clients (I'm looking at you too, Pocket Outlook). Scheduled syncs (every x minutes) waste battery life, and manual syncs mean you don't know when you get new mail - I gave both up and hacked together a SMS push system to force manual syncs when the mailbox changes on my Touch Pro, but it's still ugly. I was really hoping to get away from something like that.

Re: Can we expect IMAP IDLE on n900?
IMAP was poorly implemented on the N810. It chokes on large mailboxes. You still have to use claws to get decent IMAP support on OS2008. If Nokia still hasn't gotten it right with the N900 I don't hold out much hope for you guys. Hope I am wrong.

Re: Can we expect IMAP IDLE on n900?
so now we know that Nokia is not a phone (as some people claim) but Internet device that does not do email well ??
do I really have to pay $9/mo and get hosted MS exchange account? |

If you need imap-idle support, then consider voting for bug #3888.
|
Re: Can we expect IMAP IDLE on n900?
I'm gonna go ahead and say fixed in Harmattan. Just like putting sent/drafts on the IMAP server...
|
Re: Can we expect IMAP IDLE on n900?
+1 vote for #3888.

Re: Can we expect IMAP IDLE on n900?
+1 for bug 3888
|
Re: Can we expect IMAP IDLE on n900?
My vote too. IDLE is part of the expected functionality. making this choice for end users is both misguided and not in the spirit of the device IMHO.
|
Re: Can we expect IMAP IDLE on n900?
My vote too. I need Imap-Idle for business use.
|
Re: Can we expect IMAP IDLE on n900?
what settings are you guys using for gmail on the N900 I can't seem to get my Imap to work :-(. Please could someone help me

We're up 35 votes for this bug, from when this thread started... keep them coming please :D

Re: Can we expect IMAP IDLE on n900?
I'll have to add a vote for that one, too. Certainly useful.

Re: Can we expect IMAP IDLE on n900?
I R confused.....
Set up one imap account - and it's fine by me that it checks every 2 hours, my yahoo account goes through nokia messaging and pops in the second i receive it (Almost quicker rthen on the web page) So i'm assuming that it is using the IDLE :) |
Re: Can we expect IMAP IDLE on n900?
Being cynical, Nokia dont want IMAP IDLE cause they want you to use Nokia Messaging, which does the same thing if you are currently using a webmail service like gmail or yahoomail.

Edit: Technically, this is not the requirement. After refreshing my memory of RFC 2177 (it's been a while), it is "advised to terminate the IDLE and re-issue it at least every 29 minutes to avoid being logged off". So this would be completely dependent on the server configuration - and probably something that should be a default, but remain configurable on the client end. |
Re: Can we expect IMAP IDLE on n900?
IMAP IDLE is the best solution, with optimal battery drain and quick performance. Nokia is making a mistake betting on Nokia Messaging. They've been working on this service for years now with less than optimal results. Personally I've been grappling with Nokia Messaging across several Nokia phones and it has never worked reliably, if at all. How can they hang onto this failing service without seeing the failure rate and responding in some sort of a positive manner? Profimail has been demonstrating excellence in this area for years now. It's a fact that Nokia devices require a third party solution for push email. And the frustration is compounded for N900 users because the device uses a new operating system and Profimail must be recoded if N900 users are to have a practical solution. Where is Nokia in all this? Isn't it time to for them to go beyond collecting and reading bug reports and to provide their users with a serious, practical solution. How many years longer must we wait?

Do we really have to pester people to "vote" for bugs in order for nokia to add functionality that should have been implemented in the first place? |

If management knows what we consider to be hot issues, then they can schedule their development resources appropriately. Do resist the temptation to treat Nokia as an adversary, and instead focus on the partnership. That is the promise of this platform. |

Re: Can we expect IMAP IDLE on n900?
Yep. A DONE+IDLE is very little data, compared to a refresh which currently takes about 50KB with my old email client on the N800 (this is with IMAP and no new email).
Adding NOTIFY extension support will improve things even more, but I haven't seen support for it in those servers I'm using. |

My SSL IMAP connection uses exactly 2850 bytes (sum of downstream/upstream) to connect (including SSL negotiation), check for new mail and disconnect. |
Re: Can we expect IMAP IDLE on n900?
How much check for email sucks down is all up to a combination of client and server. Citadel imap, for example, forces the email client to transfer much more data than Squirrel imap. With the same client.
For me IMAP IDLE would be a huge win even compared to a polling time of a couple of hours w/o IDLE. |
Re: Can we expect IMAP IDLE on n900?
I am another advocate for IMAP IDLE to be enabled on Maemo 5, after all the gusto behind Maemo 5 and the N900 I have to admit I am dissapointed for IMAP IDLE not enabled on this device. If "Openess" is what maemo 5 is all about, why would such a crucial feature be omitted? My own assumption is that maybe Nokia wants to funnel everyone into using Nokia Messaging - which although is a huge improvement over previous Nokia mail clients, I still much prefer the likes of Profimail. If Maemo is all about openess, we as users should have this option available to us.

Re: Can we expect IMAP IDLE on n900?
this opennes is exactly what i miss about the basic and most important applications on the N900, thats why i created this thread:
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=38156 wihy is it that modest and microb can only be updated through firmware updates. This is quite annoying because now we are completely dependent on what nokia gives us and again those are the 2 most important applications the N900 has.... They have done a great job with the browser, i only think that they should look if they can get the cpu usage of the browser down but thats another story. But modest is broken in many area's, simple things like the send button of new email thats completely on the wrong place (i have to scroll up again to send the email and what i do have on the screen like font settings/bold are completely irrelevant for me. i never use that) But imap idle is also 1 of my top priorities, i was so used to that on my E90 with profimail.. Now if the community is just forking modest or making there own release of it (call it ComModest or what ever) so that we can update our mail client way more often and have way more speed in development of features and way more testing.. I dont care if we then loose the link between contacts (pressing there the email button) but that we then always have to do it from the email client itself.. Thats fine with me. But really we need a much better email client on the N900 and i dont think waiting for Maemo 6 will be a good idea.. There are already some threads on the forums of Lonely Cat if they would port it to the N900: http://www.lonelycatgames.eu/forum/viewforum.php?f=2 I also started one, so if there is really not much progress on modest in Maemo 5 will could all try to vote there to see if we can push LCG to release a version of ProfiMail for the N900.. |
Re: Can we expect IMAP IDLE on n900?
imap idle all the way. To the best of my knowledge it is the only opensource push option that is easily deployable on millions of existing mail servers.

On the N800 it worked very good. For me it is an step back to use the N900 for mail.

Re: Can we expect IMAP IDLE on n900?
imap idle doesnt work no, at least as far as i am testing, also the bug report is not closed yet so it only checks for the interval that i set.
its sad... Such a standard feature used by so many email servers still not being used by the according to nokia "real mobile always online computer/tablet" Nokia should really stop working on that Nokia Messaging its a complete waste of time. money and resources. Why would i route my gmail(private email) or company email, through there servers? Thats another delay and i have to hand over the credentials.. And maybe pay even for that??? When there is a perfect standard way of doing the same thing directly to my email servers (and completely secure) |
Re: Can we expect IMAP IDLE on n900?
This is silly. My iPhone 3GS works so much better for email than my N900.
