N900 RSS reader
I am pretty unimpressed with the N900's RSS reader. I preferred to browse my feeds on my Symbian phone because it had such a simple but useful reader with a finger friendly interface that used the screen well and had good controls.
The included RSS reader requires the stylus if you have big hands. Using the buttons is not a suitable either. Is there any other RSS reader apps I could help in testing? Or is there a way to improve this one? |
Re: N900 RSS reader
I've got a total different issue with the RSS reader.
I receive feeds on my E90 perfectly fine, however i get nothing on my N900 for one perticular feed. |
Re: N900 RSS reader
Another issue relating to RSS feeds: While in the standard browser, pressing the big + I don't get an option to store the rss feed. In a review lately I saw this additional possibility to my N900 software. Is this a bug or can I adjust this somewhere?

Re: N900 RSS reader
It must be that the page's feed isn't a compatible format. It must be Atom or RSS. If the site doesn't have an OPML file or one of these formats, it probably won't work. Try subscribing to the Maemo feed for testing.

the maemo feeds work fine. How can i find out if the site has an OPML file? whats even more strange is i tried to go to the website from the N900 and it doesn't load in the browser. i complete a google search, when the search returns i select the first result (which is the page i want to go to), but after a little while trying to open the page nothing happens. |
Re: N900 RSS reader
I am also underwhelmed by the built-in reader, mainly for having no offline mode.
I think one potential port possibility for the N900 is an open source iphone offline reader that interfaces with google reader, called GRIS. http://code.google.com/p/gris/ It appears to be an Objective-C GUI on top of Python 2.5 code. I don't know what the effort is to port, but it'll be the first thing I look to learn as my time frees up, assuming nobody else gets there and does a bang up job first. |

Re: N900 RSS reader
kalim13, I'm shocked you can't view this site, since I'm on it constantly from the N900. I've found very few sites that won't render properly or usefully on the N900. What URL are you trying to browse?

Re: N900 RSS reader
Are you guys all using the Built in RSS Reader? I think the GUI is terrible it's way to cramped :-(
Also, it always refreshes all post regardless of if I've read them or not. I would really like a way to have a sync with my google Reader:-( |
Re: N900 RSS reader
I'd like something similar to the S60 5th RSS reader. This N900 reader is useless on the go. I'm so far behind on research, I've gone back to my desktop for RSS reading to catch up until someone makes a real finger touch RSS reader. I don't want any Google reader either. I read my stuff offline, and a real RSS reader should just sync and work offline without issue, like the S60 version. Hope this one gets an update.

Re: N900 RSS reader
Yeah I'm with you Chris.
When I say google reader, I mean't it would be nice if it sync my feeds from there. I'm gonna do some research in to some of the other readers like Feed Circuit and stuff |

I think this RSS reader looks slick. Watch the video at the bottom of the article.

Re: N900 RSS reader
cool for the desktop, but not for a mobile, bcjenkins. Just show me all of my feeds, put a symbol by ones with new updates and a number of unread posts, and when I click it, show the unread posts in bold or a different color. Wnen I click on it, fill the entire screen with the news and images, and have a button to take you to the story, or to advance to the next post, or exit back to the feeds list.
Here's a view of S60's RSS reader, though unless you use it, it doesn't look like much, but I am able to keep up with my 266 web feeds a day for research easier than my desktop. I use the built in reader on Internet explorer or Brief for Firefox on the desktop, but prefer the S60 reader for ease of use |
Re: N900 RSS reader
I propose we try and find a developer to try and help us get this up and running?
I could try and do it myself, but I won't have time to get to it until the new year. And I'm new to Maemo / C, so it would take some time, but if by Jan no-one has sorted this out , Chris I'll give it go :-) |
Re: N900 RSS reader
OK I've sent a PM to the author of this
http://maemo.org/downloads/product/OS2008/feedcircuit/ Hopefully he gets back to us and has plans for a port :-) |

Re: N900 RSS reader
Yea I really need a good RSS reader, the stock one on the N900 is not cutting it
|
Re: N900 RSS reader
Yeah I agree that the current Maemo5 reader is not really that good (its basically the default Maemo4 Reader with added kinetic scrolling). I am thinking of trying to create my own but for this I will have to finally find the time to learn some maemo developing skills...

I've spoken with George , who wrote Feed Curcuit, and he said he is looking into his available time but he does have plans for a port :-)

Re: N900 RSS reader
My RSS reader idget is stuck on one of desktops. It won't open anytime I select it and won't delete when I try click the X in edit desktop mode.
Does anyone know of a way I can delete it altogether? |

A use case to consider: I'm getting ready to board a plane and I want to download all unread posts on the server for google reader so that when on the plane with no connection of any kind, I can still read the posts. An iphone example of this is Byline, which syncs with google reader and downloads unread posts. A jailbroken iphone example is GRIS. I hope that describes what I was looking for a little better. it's a nice feature that I would love to see in some form on the N900. Rob |
Re: N900 RSS reader
Is anybody else experiencing the problem that the reader doesn't update the feeds automatically?
It seems that I have to keep the reader running in the background to make it update automatically. Is this intended behavior or should it work without the reader open in the background? |
Re: N900 RSS reader
I abandoned the reader pretty quickly. Too stylus oriented. Can't walk my dog or do anything while I do research anymore.

Raki (ROCK-ee) by definition is a big mobile freak, since he's never far from a high end device. My streak of posting with him along has ended, since now I'm missing a decent RSS reader, automatic screen rotation, one handed operation, and T9. (I hate QWERTY, but I'm pretty quick on the N900, but nothing close to the 38 wpm I get with T9...) I'm praying Nokia returns to form soon and brings those features back so my dog and I can spend more time together. Here's some pictures of my baby boy, Raki. He's the most valueable thing I own since I sold my car. (Paid $3200 for him as a three week old puppy.) |
Re: N900 RSS reader
Wow He is awesome :-)
and beautiful too :-) I'm pretty impressed with the training and achievements well done to both of you :-) |
Re: N900 RSS reader
Hey all, quick question.
Can the N900 RSS reader get updates from forums such as vbulletin forums? As an example, I would like to get the Anandtech forums on my soon to be N900 (just placed my order today!). Can the RSS reader do something like this, or should I start a new thread for a dedicated forum reader? |

Re: N900 RSS reader
Thanks for the compliments, Chris. I love him like a son, and he's never away from me since he was 3 weeks old.
I'd be happy to provide George with some UI ideas, and I'm sure joshua.maverick can provide the artistic touches, that's if he wants the help. I've never seen his app, but I'm an avid RSSer, reading hundreds of sites a day. I haven't done much since I got the N900, so I'm itching to see a great reader for Maemo5, preferably with ASR so I could work out Raki while I study, keep up with news, and research. I never realized how important a good reader was until now. I'm an RSS addict. |
Re: N900 RSS reader
if any of u like google reader, try the iphone optimized version. works really well on the n900, especially with the latest firmware, since browser can work in portrait mode.
enter the address http://www.google.com/reader/i/ and for gmail http://mail.google.com/mail/x/gdlakb-/gp/ by the way i just joined the community today. i got my n900 4 days back. i ditched my one year old iphone for it. so far i dont regret it. great phone |
Re: N900 RSS reader
I had a really bad experience with the build in RSS reader.
My RSS list on my PC is really big but is organized in categorized folders. When I import the .ompl file to my N900 the RSS reader just imported everything with NO FOLDERS. Now I have a mess of tones of uncategorized RSS feeds and NO OPTION to delete them all... A complete disaster . |
