Help With Maemo Mapper

Hi there, iīve been searching the entire web for help with this issue i have with maemo mapper, although i havenīt found anything.

So, thereīs probably a thread that i havenīt found with the information i need, but since i havenīt found maybe some one could indicate it for me.

Anyway, i looked into the repositories thread, and a lot of others threads including outside information and i still canīt manage to get maemo mapper working on my n810.

I tried to download automatically the repositories, from the n810, but it just keeps giving me fail notices. I tried downloading them from threads or websites but it has been in vain.

So, iīm gonna travel after x-mas and i would like it very much if i could get this darn thing to work till then.

If anyone could help me make this work i would very much appreciate it.

By the way, when i start maemo mapper it just gives me a black screen, i am connected on the internet and on the gps, but it just gives me a black screen and a fail to download repositories.

well, thanks in advance!!

Christian.

Re: Help With Maemo Mapper

Black screen is because there are no tiles.

Do you have enough disk space?

I just installed MM on my N900, went to the menu: Maps > Download Sample Repositories and it works for me.

Re: Help With Maemo Mapper

Can you download anything at all from your N810? Is this a generic network problem?

Re: Help With Maemo Mapper

If you haven't used Fragos' tutorial, you ought to start there.

There's also a thread about it (which would have been a good place to have put your post, rather than starting a new thread).

Good luck!

Re: Help With Maemo Mapper

Yes, i am able to download to my n810. tried to install maemo mapper again to see if the problem was an old version or something like that but nothing.

Anyway, i am sorry if i posted something that is already on the forum, but like i told you i looked everywhere for help and couldnīt find, i looked into the tutorial above and everything that he tells me to do iīve done and still nothing, found another thread from the maemo moderator with the repositories downloads, but i think i couldnīt download them or something like that.

So, my problem is, from my point of view, iīve done everything to make it work, and it still doesnīt work.

If anyone can give me a light on where the problem is, i still thank you all!!!

Re: Help With Maemo Mapper

You know, you don't really "download" the repositories. You put in proper addresses in maemo-mapper's settings. Whatever you're doing, try it with respect to maps from a non-Google repository. I'd start from scratch and follow Fragos step-by-step. I would ignore GPS until you have SOME map showing. Make your first download very modest, just very large scale, continent-size.

OK, do this:

Zoom out until you are at Zoom level 18 (it doesn't matter that you see nothing but black, it should still show zoom level when you change levels). Go to Menu >> Maps and click Yahoo Satellite, so it has a dot next to it.

Next go to Maps >> Manage Maps ... Under Setup tab, you should have selected Download Maps and By Area

(I'm assuming you have a wifi connection active.)

In Zoom tab, check off only 18, 19, and 20. Click OK.

You still don't see anything?

Yeah, now i can see the map, appeared right away for me.
I was trying with google, could that have been the problem ??
Should i just work with yahoo maps now ??

Re: Help With Maemo Mapper

Well, now you can experiment. It might be that you were starting too zoomed in. People have trouble with the Google repositories. Start with Yahoo and once you have the hang of it all, give Google a try again.

Re: Help With Maemo Mapper

Google repos are notoriously unreliable, they will, for example, shut you off for a while after just a modest amount of downloads. Then they keep changing the working URLs and then nothing will work. It's easier to stay on the other maps (e.g. OpenStreet maps), particularly when you're just starting (later you can follow the 'maemo mapper repositories' thread).

Re: Help With Maemo Mapper

Thank you!! you really helped, but again, i went to download the maps by area like you said, and it gives me a fail notice, yes, i am connected to the internet !!

You have any thoughts on that ???

Re: Help With Maemo Mapper

I suggest you try the openstreet maps which are open source and always available. Google has changed the the URL a few times and my bet is that is your problem.

Hi, if you managed to download a piece manually, did you check if auto download is switched on? It should be at the bottom of the menu where all you maps are listed

Mapper will use the map tiles from the source specified in the Maps menu. Select Openstreet and it will be used. Map downloads are performed when you view an area for which you already haven't retrieved a map.

I understood that, what i am saying is, i canīt select openstreet, i have all the options of maps, like everyone else has, but instead of openstreat i have the option of choosing NLS.
I have no idea if NLS is the same as openstreet, so no my other question is, do i have to download openstreet, or is NLS the same as openstreet ???

thanks

I doubled checked myself and indeed only one map source can be selected at a time. Selecting a new source un-selects the old source as indicated by a bullet dot.

NLS is the topografy map of Finland. It only covers Finland and works only there. If you are outside the map area it tells you "Map download failed" or similar.

Openstreetmap is completely different and covers the whole world.

Hi, I'm not trying to change subject here, and I understand and respect people who prefers MM.
However, why don't you try Wayfinder?
If you try the following:

http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...FINDER&page=26

This guy qwerty12 made things very easy to use it.
You only need the Net once to get a trial for 7 days.
You can get it working in a short time (aside the maps download of course)

Good luck!

Sorry to jump in but that picture shows you using 'Yahoo Satellite' for map tiles (black dot to the left). Changing to another option is merely a case of tapping on the relevant choice and the dot should switch when you next look at it.

I found the first download took some time. I also found that once I had a corrupt tile set and had to remove the files from my storage area to stop Maemo Mapper having a fit.

Hope this helps some!

Have you checked that the Openstreetmap map repository URL address is correct in your settings? Maybe this thread helps:

Any other thoughts please ??

Thanks

Re: Help With Maemo Mapper

Despite using http protocol map repository downloads require a different client application than a browser. That is why you're getting the error -- it doesn't indicate a problem with the repository, just the way you're trying to access it. Openstreet maps should always work and do for me. Map downloads are effected by available storage for the map tiles and downloads occur according to what area you are viewing with Maemo Mapper -- zoom out and a larger map will be downloaded.
