N900 - Hotmail Help/Mark Items
Hi all,
Just got my N900 this morning. Its running like a dream, but I just wondered if there is a way to mark items (like using the # key)... Also, is there a way to mark messages in Hotmail as read? Googlemail automatically knew I'd read them on the pc but Hotmail is saying 3000+ new messages! I want to mark them all as read, and then back loads of to the archive... Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. EDIT: I've gotten closer - I selected the menu at the top, clicked "move" and then hit ctrl+a. I then held down a press on one item and clicked "mark as read". This didn't actually register it as having them all read though... any ideas? I can't ctrl+a on the inbox menu :( Sorry! |

Are you talking about the Browser? Or the Email application?
Providing steps to reproduce, starting at the beginning, are always welcome. :) |

Although, it doesn't actually matter anymore as I just synced my Hotmail via pop3 to Outlook on my pc and delted everything from the server. Figured I'd just start again! If people know how to get around this though, it might be useful for others? |
Re: N900 - Hotmail Help/Mark Items
I wish each message had a check box and we could mark as read or delete that way.

Re: N900 - Hotmail Help/Mark Items
I was also hoping for an answer to this question. I've tried long-pressing, using the shift-key, etc. But still can't find any way to quickly Mark All Messages As Read in the Inbox, or even a Delete All Messages function would be helpful.

Re: N900 - Hotmail Help/Mark Items
When using IMAP it definitely works for me, but I assume that Hotmail is POP or something? (Never used it myself.)

Re: N900 - Hotmail Help/Mark Items
Ahem, sorry, only read part of it.
So I go to the folder, click "Delete messages" from the main menu, and click "Control+A" to mark all of them. Does this work for you? |

Yes - I was able to do this, but when I then held a press on one of the items and clicked "mark as read", it seemed to have no effect. Has this worked for anyone else? |
Re: N900 - Hotmail Help/Mark Items
Sorry without trying to hijack this thread I have a related question…
If I delete a message from my hotmail account using the N900s email application it delete just fine. But then when I check my hotmail account using my computer (web browser) the messages are still there. Is this normal behaviour? If so, this makes the built in email app pointless for me, because as I go though and check my mail I have to repeat myself by login into hotmail using a web browser and deleting again. |
Re: N900 - Hotmail Help/Mark Items
yes. unfortunately, it only marks them as read on the server.

Re: N900 - Hotmail Help/Mark Items
not being able to delete messages froms erver on pop3 when you delete from device is almost deal breaker!

Re: N900 - Hotmail Help/Mark Items
a-effen-men! I'm cleaning my inbox now of the 1326 emails from the last few days clogging up my inbox. why do I need to do this?

here is nice article on IMAP vs POP for Gmail http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2008/0...ersus-pop.html Here is how to enable IMAP http://mail.google.com/support/bin/a...95&topic=12891 AFAIK Hotmail only supports POP3, so either you need to set to download and delete or leave messages on server. |
Re: N900 - Hotmail Help/Mark Items
It may not be designed for it, but we've been doing it for years with all email, so no reason to step back now. It works on all of my Symbian phones. And not all email has IMAP access.

Re: N900 - Hotmail Help/Mark Items
on every Symbian device, using even the default email client, when you delete a message, you get the question "Also delete from server?" And I have a few webmail accounts, at&t/sbcglobal personal accounts, and a few related to my blog team that are hosted by the admin. All of my accounts are POP3.

I wouldn't think it fair to call it a step backwards: this is Maemo not Symbian 60 so some things work in a different way. Symbian tends to be a consumer appliance whereas Maemo tends to be IMHO (not exclusively) a techie base at present. I would however suggest it might be worth a brainstorm for this functionality and see if it gets picked up. I can't tell without source code but it would seem a simple enough modification to impliment. I would however suggest an option similar to saving web site options to avoid being plagued with the question each time if you didn't want it. |
Re: N900 - Hotmail Help/Mark Items
The most recent Symbian devices have an option to delete from the device and server or just the device by default, so you no longer get that message, but I like it because some stuff I do want to keep there but not on the device. I get tons of email a day, hundreds, and its how I manage my communications and research. I'm really missing my N95 8gb for mobile functionality. I miss posting while walking my dog the most.
