New N900 Checklist? What hardware to test for potential problems?
 

Hi, I'll get my N900 @ Dec 11, via GittiGidiyor (A Turkish EBay-like service) and when I get my device, I have 3 days to test it if it works perfectly or not, after 3 days, i cant get my money back.

So, I checked the forum and noticed only "faulty mic problem" and I'll test mine when It arrives. Is there any important and maybe DOA hardware comes with N900?

Check for
mechanics of the keyboard,
dead pixels,
random reboots,
uneven LCD light

and do a forum search on these to learn more :)

First things I'd check are the slider, the camera focus and flash, and the speakers and mic. If the mic isn't working, try to reboot, and if that doesn't work, reflash the firmware. Your device will still have a manufacturers warranty, or at least should. Even without a receipt, you can register the device online and they'll honor the warranty for a period of I believe a 10 day courtesy period. At least in the US it is that way.

Thanks christexaport & younit =) I'll check all of them. I'm not sure about Turkey, b/c N900 is not officialy released here, and it seems it never will.

make sure you don't have the chess-bug (in the chess-game, switched bishops and knights. Makes it a reaaaalll weird game all of a sudden)

Hm, you could watch out for a loose USB port and try out all of your accessoriers of course.

Make sure it's authentic! Look for a made in finland sticker somewhere around the back (where the battary goes) also another good way to check is to take a picture and see if it's really 5mp and high quality, and make sure it's running maemo (watch some videos on youtube and compare).

The N900 is made in Korea rather than Finland, so a "Made in Finland" label should ring warning bells.

I remember only first 300 N900 prototype was made in Finland. Isnt it true?

btw, is there any way to check its authenticity by IMEI number?

yeah, afaik, only pre-massproduction-units were made in finland.

Dead pixels are extremely hard to spot since they are very very small each. I just noticed a dead pixel myself and i will return it because of it. It is almost no bother but nonetheless.
Best way to spot a dead pixel is on a black screen. Weird enough i believe with laptops this is the other way around.

How far out is Amazon? ...and I'd assume they won't be shipping any of the Finland but Korean made ones. Although ... the second batch... heck I may just wait until they are in stock at Amazon before placing an order.

they ARE in stock. I preordered in late Sept. Not sure why they're still not here yet. Don't get me started.

I wish the DFW Maemo users would get together and go to Irving and stage a protest in front of the Nokia offices here about this preorder fiasco. It is really being swept under a rug.

Help with finding faults on the N900
 

Hi everyone,

I’m getting a friend of mine to purchase the N900 for me from UAE, and I’d like him to test the phone to see if it has any problems before he brings it to Australia for me. The problem is he’s not much of a techie, so I’ll need to explain how he has to check the phone in layman’s terms. This is just to be safe, so that I don’t get a defective unit when it’s already in my hands.

Based on what I’ve searched around the forums, he should look out for:

1) microphone – test to see if it works, can make phone calls, other person can hear him clearly

2) reboots – play around with the phone to see if it randomly reboots?

3) dead pixel test – use the link http://www.gdargaud.net/Hack/DeadPixels.html or http://jasonfarrell.com/misc/deadpixeltest.php

Is there a concrete way to check the reboot problem, besides what I mentioned above?

Did I miss anything else? I’m specifically looking for faults that is covered by warranty (ie hardware, not necessarily software). If I did miss a thread listing all these faults, do point me in the right direction.

battery life. have your friend charge and use it a few times to make sure it isn't like 6 hour short with little to no usage.

To test the microphone without needing a SIM card, use the camera to film a video.

thanks guys! i tried searching but couldnt find anything - looks like i was missing the keyword "mess" :)

so with the reboot problem, i'll just get my friend to use the phone heavily and see if anything weird happens?

Aranel's list will be helpful for potential buyers, it'll probably be a good idea to make it a sticky. can an admin merge this thread?

slider and keyboard, i know 2 issues in used devices:

1) The keyboard dont hold tight when closed. And when opened, it doesnt stays parallel with the screen.

2) The Backlight doesnt turn off when closed - the phone app doenst go to portait mode. This is because the magnetic switch is damaged. Some says that the magnetic case lock can damage the switch.

The first can be fixed. The second, no.
