n900 calander-google calendar import/export howto

Ok this is to Import /export your gmail calendar to the native calendar that comes with the n900

It is not an automated solution just the one that works for me. As with anything YMMV. I am still having a little trouble getting events made on the 900 to import to gmail correctly.

From gmail calendar to n900

In the n900 opening an ical link in gmail calendar for your specific calendar will bring up a dialog to import the calendar.

Step by step

Method 1
Open a web browser and log into your google calendar.
On the left there is a box displaying your calendars. Choose settings
Choose the calendar you would like to import.
Choose the private ical link at the bottom. Click on the big blue link. A new page will open and a file download dialog will open. Choose "Open with Calendar"
Select the calendar that you would like to import to. Choose save.

Method 2
I have my gmail account set up on the n900, so I sent myself an email with the ical links to my Google calendars. I then opened up the email on the device and just clicked the link.
A new page will open and a file download dialog will open. Choose "Open with Calendar"
Select the calendar that you would like to import to. Choose save.

From n900 to Google calendar

Not perfect sync.

Open calendar on n900 select the calendar toolbar. Choose settings.
Choose edit calendar.
Choose the calendar to export.
Choose "export" dialog.
Save the file somewhere where you know it will be.
Open your Google calendar in a web browser.
On the left there is a box displaying your calendars. Choose settings.
Choose import calendar. In the dialog choose browse. Navigate to you save file. Select calendar you would like to import to and then select import.

Good luck to all.

E.

Doesn't the N900 support Mail for Exchange : http://www.google.com/mobile/products/sync.html ?

If you read around a little mfe only syncs one calendar and sometimes works and sometimes not.

My method is separate from mfe and allows you to sync as many calendars from Google to the n900 as you would like.

This is not syncing. What you describe is importing and exporting calendars. Thanks for that writeup, it will sure be useful to some, but calling it syncing is wrong.

So just to clarify how this works, if I import a calendar from Google to the N900 this way, it stays up to date with changes made on Google on its own, but if I make changes directly in the N900's calendar app they don't get reflected on Google automatically - is that right?

The import only works for the data that is on the Google calendar at the time of importation. Any future changes to your Google calendar will require a new import step. This will add the new data from the Google calendar.

With regard to exporting the n900 calendar. It seems that some of the events on the calendar get exported and sometimes they get duplicated on the Google calendar. I haven't done enough testing to understand the behavior.

Re: n900 calander-gmail sync howto

I would like to sync / copy my gmail calender to my n900 but days later and I still cant get it done. I tried importing, but that seems to want to bring other things into my gmail calender (which is not what I want to do)?? I tried exporting from my gmail calender to n900 (which is what I want to do) but I dont see an option to to save as calender - just save. Then when I go to find it, I cant??? Also, it seems to be saving as a zip file and I dont know how to open zip on n900???

When I tried to send myself the ical email, this didnt open up as a link. Just an address. All of above is taking place with a very slow internet link.

Yours, very frustrated!!!

Re: n900 calander-gmail sync howto

I tried to open calender file in the N900 and got an error that its an invalid calendar file.

I guess I will wait for proper sync anyways as the whole point for me is for my device to remind me to do stuff because I will forget, so naturally i will forget to update my calendar too.

When I try to do this with an .ical file on my own webserver I only get a "Save to device" button, no "Open with Calendar".

Any hints on what I am doing wrong? Some header missing? I am using the text/calendar mime-type.

*EDIT:* The problem was that I had connected the N900 to the computer (so MyDocs wasn't available to the N900). As soon as I disconnected it and tried clicking on the .ics-file, I got the "Open with Calendar"-button!

Thanks for the description of import/export!

Tap: Settings, Connectivity, Mail for Exchange, Settings
Then scroll down the list and tap 'Synchronise calender and tasks' under 'Calender and tasks'.

Re: n900 calander-gmail sync howto

For the time being I would recommend all of those trying to sync google calendar with N900 calendar to use Nuevasync (www.nuevasync.com). Get a free account there and give Nuevasync permission to stay in sync with your google account. Then, the website will tell you to set up a mail for exchange profile using Nuevasync's server settigs. Your N900 will sync just perfectly with Nuevasync, which in turn is in perfect sync with google.

On the website you can choose which google services you want to sync. Options for a free account consist of calendar, tasks, contacts (works extremely well, got 150+ contacts in sync without missing info / misplaced info / etc). Push e-mail is only available for premium (paid) accounts but that's not a big problem since the N900's built-in mail application works quite well with google mail.

So basically, Nuevasync is a perfect solution until Nokia finally manages to sync the N900 properly with google services, and maybe even after that. Spread the word.

When I do this, the calendar app says "Invalid calendar file", even with the simplest .ics files I could come up with.

Do you have an example of an .ics file that you can import in the N900 without problem?

(I have filed a bug here with my examples:
https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7790 - but no feedback yet).

This would be a perfect way to get my shared (like my clubs play calendar for the year) to get into the n900. But shared calendars dont seem to have the ical option :(

Re: n900 calander-gmail sync howto

@FreddyFish: I use nuevasync since December and it works but I won't call it perfect.
- all calendars are merged to the N900 standard calendar
- up-syncing (N900 to nuevasync to google) seems not to work, at least not if multiple calendars are used.
- syncing sometimes works, sometimes I get an error.

So, It works - far from being perfect.

BTW, I'm still searching for a perfect solution to sync multiple calendars to somewhere on the web for free. Any hints are highly appreciated :-)

BR, Petibub

Maybe this:
http://www.google.com/translate?u=ht...F8&sl=de&tl=en
will help you (it's translated from german into english using google translate)?

You can sync events, tasks and notes from independent calendars to SyncML-Services. If these services provide more than one calendar you also can sync to multiple calendars on the server side.

Feel also free to add a how to or your impressions to this wiki page:

Re: n900 calander-gmail sync howto

Thanks jukey. I could read it in German - I'm from Vienna :-)

It looks like I'll try to get a syncML service with multiple calendars which also syncs to Thunderbird/Lighting.

Inbetween I'll try Erminig-NG: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=40408
It syncs to google with multiple calendars. It's available since yesterday and I'll definitely try it (after a backup of the cals :-)

thanks again,

Petibub

Re: n900 calander-gmail sync howto

Not sure if I should ask this here, but My Cal no longer syncs. If I go into Mail for exchange and click on "Full resynchronization" The Gui shows theinitializing works, but when it gets to the Cal and Tasks it hangs at about 98%. If I do contacts by its self it works. So as of now the Cal is messed up. Is there something I can delete? or a log somewhere I can look at?

Thanks

and now everything works.

Re: n900 calander-gmail sync howto

If you're having trouble importing iCal .ics files to the N900 calendar, you should know that the alternative GPE Calendar app handles the import fine. I have detailed instructions for using GPE Calendar as a clean-up converter on my blog. Basically, install GPE Calendar, have it import the .ics file, run the command line command gpe-calendar -e filename.ics and open that in File Manager to get your events correctly imported into Maemo Calendar.

importing ical by clicking it is ok but tiring.
I wrote this script:) to do this automatically.
