I would like to transfer my Vonage number to a VOIP provider who will provide SIP credentials to use with my N900. Mobile phone service is bad at my home, so SIP over WiFi would provide much better service. Simultaneous ring and voicemail are import features I would like to keep.

So far http://www.broadvoice.com/ is the leading contender.

I like http://www.phonepower.com but it appears that they do not release SIP credentials even though they allow you to bring your own hardware.

Can anyone suggest a SIP provider they are happy with?

Well, that's disappointing. About a year ago, I came within inches of purchasing service with Phone Power.* At that time, they claimed they were just finalizing the details on how they'd make their service available to SIP credential needing mobile devices like the Internet Tablets.

I haven't looked at their site or forums since, so I'm going to guess some blocker appeared that caused them to rethink their plans. However, if they're still saying they're only weeks away from supporting devices that require knowledge of those SIP credentials, I'd advise taking it with some hefty grains of salt.

* As in, I bought a phone adapter and ventured through most of their web-based, bring-your-own-device ordering process multiple times, credit card at the ready, only to be stopped each time by form errors.

Bruce, it may be way more complexity than you're looking for, but have you considered running an Asterisk box? You can get one of the all-in-one distributions like PIAF (PBX-In-A-Flash, what I use), run on any hardware, get a VOIP termination / origination vendor (I use voip.ms, have a couple of backup vendors) and you get all the telephony capability you'd ever want. You can run it on practically any hardware, so the only cost would be your time and you'll probably want to get one of the linux linksys routers and flash with DD-WRT or one of the other open source routers to implement QoS on your home network to prioritize SIP traffic. Our small business used to use an on premises box, but ended up paying the $35/month for a hosted Asterisk VM at lylix.net right on the internet backbone, and it has been practically bulletproof for the last year and reduced a lot of the hassles of hosting our own.

Google just bought Gizmo5. Is that what you're looking for? I assume it's to integrate their googlevoice application and google phone numbers. that might be a nice way to go. Vitelity now and it works well.

Nokia used to have GizmoVoIP on some phones, which I used for years. I haven't been able to sign in to Gizmo5 on N900, but Skype is working fine.

Google bought Gizmo5 recently and integration into GoogleVoice is in the works. No new accounts though, for now.

Me too - free incoming STD number as well. Help for setup is extremely useful. I've got it encoded on my old S60, my N810 and the N900. Still have a few issues with the N900 configuration but susptect that's more the fact I've forgotten to adjust a setting somewhere.

How does sipgate handle calling other (non sipgate) sip users? Their website talks about free calls within sipgate and to 'selected partners' but it's all a bit vague.

Gizmo5 + Google Voice seems like the a great option if Gizmo5 accounts were available. Unfortunately they are not.

Gizmo5 refers to Google, and Google says "Coming soon."

People who have Gizmo5 accounts that they obtained before Google bought Gizmo5 can link those accounts to Google Voice using Google Voices voicemail features with Gizmo5's SIP capability. My guess is that this will be the norm when Google bring Gizmo5 back to life.

I've not had any issues making calls but all my contacts seem to be sipgate so I'll ask around for a test.

I have been using http://www.diamondcard.us/ from my asterisk box for years and have been extremely happy with voice quality, service, and price.

When my N900 arrived it connected directly to diamondcard using the SIP interface and worked beautifully.

I now am able to connect directly to my asterix box and also to diamondcard from the N900. Sweet.

Give diamondcard a try.

The call quality and reliability is excellent even at peak calling times, unlike some other services..

I moved from Vonage to Viatalk almost 2 years ago. They let you know the SIP-credentials and they do work on N900. They do transfer the number over from your Vonage provider. (I did that...) So far I have been happy with their service and have not had any outages that I had noticed.

The only "problem" is that I can not have both my home SIP phone adapter and N900 connected simultaneously. So the simultaneous ring of different SIP devices using same credentials does not work. (This does work with Gizmo5.) However, Viatalk do have simulring options that you can setup up any other ordinary phone.

Voicemail of course is included. Also E911 service if that is of interest.

For pricing it (with unlimited calling) is less than $10 a month at the moment ($99/year).
