Adblock Plus on N900

I installed Adblock Plus on my N900 several times now and did some reboots too but it still does not work. All ads are displayed and I can't add filters in the options because the button is freezed. Any ideas?

same happens for me - i tried both the repository one, and the 1.1.1 version (including subscription to the list) - not blocking any ads whatsoever. not even after 1-2 reboots

I can get the adblock installed both ways and get subscribed to easylist and even import my customized patterns.ini. But it does not filter anything! Additionally, uninstalling the .deb package did not work correctly. The extension was still listed in the extensions tab but the remove button was not functional. Closing the browser and moving .mozilla/ to a different name fixed that.

Re: Adblock Plus on N900

Mine was disabled in prefs.js by default (in addition to enabled in about:config). After I removed the enabled: false line in prefs.js and restarting the browser daemon, it works now.

Re: Adblock Plus on N900

thanks Bundyo. installed and used about:config to enable the adblock extension (just search for adblock and look for enable which is false by default, apparently).
only thing now is that it seems to affect default browser functionality - for example when typing in the address bar i used to get previous items or an offer to search google for the typed phrase. now they're gone, the address bar isn't 'smart' anymore :)
any ideas?

Re: Adblock Plus on N900

strange... after a browser restart and another trip to about:config it started working again (see pre post). didn't change anything though. oh well, happy it works and to be rid of ads :D

Re: Adblock Plus on N900

I installed Adblockplus from the application manager (v. 1maemo0-8, with Adblock 1.0.2). After noticing some ads on some pages, I assumed it wasn't working correctly. However, after disabling it and re-enabling it, it appears that it is blocking most ads but not all.

Re: Adblock Plus on N900

I was able to get it working by following the instructions found here: http://browser.garage.maemo.org/news/12/

several reboots were required since I wasn't sure how to restart the browser daemon without restarting the device itself. Also note that I had to uninstall the copy of ABP that I had previously installed via the application manager. The directions to install it via the browser are included.

here is a pic showing it installed:

For me it was making youtube and any other video site stutter. Sometimes everything was unwatchable.

Whoops. I posted it via the sharing service on the N900. Fixed it.

I ended up just rebooting the phone. Try closing all of the browser windows before you try rebooting it though, it might be as simple as that.

Weird... mine shows enabled in about:config, I manually copied the ini from my PC (using the same old version of ABP) and still shows nothing for me on that screen...

Unable to get adblockplus working...have tried altering about:config, restarting browser/phone multiple times, and re-installing adblock plus multiple times.

Check the prefs.js too.

First uninstall any previous installations of ABP. Then follow the directions here: http://browser.garage.maemo.org/news/12/

I'm trying to get adblock plus to work, and I was following the tutorial linked fron this thread until I couldn't get the browser to restart. I tried restarting the phone but to no avail. Can anyone help?

Same problem here. Can't get to preferences because it says adb won't work before you restart the microb. I've tried the restart button, manually restarted the browser and even the phone but it always says the same.

myk 2010-01-02 17:22

Re: Adblock Plus on N900

Same here. It says "restart microB to activate". Restart button does not work. manually killing browser and browserd does not help.

I think I'm ready to reflash and start again if Nokia ever release the updates.

Re: Adblock Plus on N900

After installing adblock plus and restarted the browser nothing changed. After switching off the phone and back on adblock started working fine.

I did not have to define any filters as they are defaulted to easylist already??

myk 2010-01-03 02:02

Re: Adblock Plus on N900

p.s. somehow adblock plus now says it is installed.
But I have no filters, the "add filter..." button does nothing. And the web is full of flashing blinking adverts. I'd forgotten how awful it was. Almost as bad as commercial TV channels without a tivo/pvr. :-)

Unfortunately XUL Popup menus does not work in MicroB, and we cannot get "Filters->Add Filter Subscription" menu Item.

I hope someone can fix this problem in future, or write Mobile version of AdBlockPlus extension (with big buttons, and tabs).

Right now we can subscribe to some filters in this way: Press "CTRL+N" shortcut or open "New window" via Application Menu.

Type in URLBar next url: "chrome://adblockplus/content/ui/tip_subscriptions.xul"
............

Where is that from? Have you actually tried it on n900?
I got a file-not-found error. had a look at the jar file and found no "ui" directory, so it should be

chrome://adblockplus/content/tip_subscriptions.xul

so I can select easylist, but same problem, the 'subscribe' button does not seem to do anything. Do we need another manual URL now?

Whats the story here? Was adblockplus broken by a microB update?

Yes it works with 1.1.1.

Re: Adblock Plus on N900

Thanks Bundyo.
I must have still had a version conflict - obviously had the wrong JAR file.
After deleting all and following those instructions properly, it now works.

Midget010 2010-01-03 21:53

Re: Adblock Plus on N900

I finally got it to work. Make sure before you try and follow the instructions that adblock isn't in your microb addons or the uninstall menu on the N900's app manager. Thanks for the link to the instructions. :)

can you explain in plain words to a linux noob like mine how you managed to update the adblock 1.0.2 to 1.1.1?

Thanks

Remove 1.0.2, install 1.1.1 :)

Re: Adblock Plus on N900

Just uninstalled adblock for microb and made hosts settings with this guide:
http://wiki.maemo.org/Ad_blocking
Page load now faster and get rendered faster. So I would not recommend this.

Yeh. It worked for me also by blocking stuff as it should, but on the other hand page loading and rendering were little slower. Hosts blocking feels bit snappier for me.

Re: Adblock Plus on N900

i followed the instructions and i am stuck now ...
uninstalled 1.0.2 from application manager
it was still in microB ... i upgraded add-ons
i restarted the phone a few times ... somehow adblock disappeared from the add-on list
installed 1.1.1 following the instructions ... and now i'm stuck at restart browser
whatever i do: restarting the phone, pressing restart browser ... nothing happens

what can i do?
how can i uninstall adblock? it is not in application manager ...
uninstall from add-ons doesn't work

that's because i had to upgrade :D
1.0.2 somehow was working

:(

Re: Adblock Plus on N900

one other thing ... adblock is still 1.0.2 in add-ons list !

Re: Adblock Plus on N900

EDIT: sorry.. didn't notice that for you uninstalling from add-ons does not work.

To remove adblock 1.1.1 do the following:

1. Open browser
2. Open a webpage (e.g. google.com)
3. Select "Settings" from the top menu (click the title bar)
4. Select "Extensions" (using Finnish so can't be sure)
5. You'll arrive on extension page where you can remove extensions
