Maemo Browser - Hover Mode
Hi,
Does anyone in this forum have been successfully able to get to the "Hover Mode" in the browser? For some reason, I havent been able to get the "mouse cursor" at all when I do a swipe from left to right as shown in many videos. This is what I'm referring to http://maemo.nokia.com/features/maemo-browser/gestures. Is there any setting that needs to be enabled for this? Unable to select text from web pages is a drag. While we are on the topic, can Maemo identify if the selection made is phone number and popup the add new contact menu? |
Re: Maemo Browser - Hover Mode
Works for me - just swipe across from outside the display to inside (on the left hand side - swiping the other side gives you the history).

Re: Maemo Browser - Hover Mode
I swipe outside to inside of the screen on the bottom-left hand side for a more reliable trigger. I do not know if that makes a difference, but it seems to for my fingers.

Same problem here. I use my finger

Re: Maemo Browser - Hover Mode
You need to start the swipe outside the screen (on the black frame). Once you get this, it is easy :)

Re: Maemo Browser - Hover Mode
It works for me as follows.
Run the browser and go to some website. With finger, swipe in from the edge of the phone itself on the left, just below the little speaker hole (is it?) halfway up the phone. (In other words, sweep in from well outside the visible screen area.) Now a little box with an arrow in it appears about 1/4 of the way up the left edge of the screen. Tap on the box. A red line appears in it, crossing the arrow, and a little cursor arrow appears on the screen. I am now in hover mode and can use the cursor like a mouse cursor. Tap on the box again to turn it off. |
Re: Maemo Browser - Hover Mode
The swipe area is not the entire left side of the screen. The sweet spot for the Mouse Hover mode is halfway between the speaker slot and the lower edge of the screen. When the browser is in windowed mode you can use the status bar as a guide. The swipe area is just above the status bar.

Re: Maemo Browser - Hover Mode
Use your nail - I had issues when I used my finger. Nail is far more precise and results in it working 95% of the time.

Re: Maemo Browser - Hover Mode
Tried all that suggested in this post - thumb, nail, stylus. Actually drained the battery out doing it. Either I'm not getting it or there is some problem with the s/w. How can I eliminate that its not a s/w problem?

Re: Maemo Browser - Hover Mode
I can get the cursor to appear, but then I cant move it anywhere - it just disappears!

Re: Maemo Browser - Hover Mode
@melaniepittam, yes, you need to click on the icon (on the left hand side) to keep it :)

Re: Maemo Browser - Hover Mode
Really took me some sweet time to get this.. thank the heavens for this thread ;)
It does seem that using your finger is a no-no, nail of the thumb/stylus works just fine. Some effort could maybe be done to make this easier - once you've gotten it you'll get it every time, but getting that first successful sweep..Truly frustrating. |
Re: Maemo Browser - Hover Mode
maybe this helps:
i found it easier to do with nails/stylus. i also found that speed matters. if you're too slow, you'll just drag the page to the right (that's what happened to me all the time). it has to be a quick movement. |

Re: Maemo Browser - Hover Mode
slide to the right from outside the screen halfway between the speaker and bottom left corner with my left thumb works just fine for me everytime.

Swipe your fingernail from the outside (black) quickly.
Tap the arrow icon box. |
Re: Maemo Browser - Hover Mode
Is it possible that the version sent to US has this disabled or something? The "About Product" reads as follows
Nokia N900 Maemo 5 Version: 1.2009.42-11.002 Nail/Stylus dont work. All I get is the screen shifting to the right and if I hold there, I get the context menu that allows to "add address", "save page" etc. Any ideas to determine if this feature is working any other way? |

Make sure that the page you are on in the browser is non refreshing. When I use the mouse in any page that refreshes the mouse goes away.
you can use the shift key to start text selection while using the mouse pointer. E |
Re: Maemo Browser - Hover Mode
Took me a few attempts to figure it out aswell.
The sweep needs to be pretty much ninja-fast flick of finger, anything short of that will fail. But for some reason it does work quite nicely once you get it... |

Here is a youtube link on my futile attempts

Open up Sketch, top menu: canvas size, add to left. Try to color in the left edge. I got the above, but after *alot* of effort. It filled in quicker towards the corners. |

To sum it up, using firm pressure swipe from off the display on the left side to somwhere on the web page. If you do this your will enable mouse hover mode every time. Firm pressure and swipe onto the web page from the left. Edit: And if you are using a stylus don't press to firmly. You won't want to scratch your display. Edit 2: tunn3lratz after looking at your video you don't have a firm enough contact with the screen. Use a little bit more pressure. The important thing is to make sure your have firm contact on the screen when your stylus is off of the screen. The key is the transition from off screen to on screen. |

More likely is that you're not using enough pressure. The edge pixels on my N900 seem to be much less sensitive than the ones over the rest of the screen. If you don't use enough pressure as you go over that edge, the critical first row of pixels won't respond. Also, are you able to swipe in from the right-hand-side to bring up the browser history? It's the same gesture, but from the opposite edge. Regards, Roger |
