No it cannot.

There is no way to display 1080p or even 720p with the N900, so why would you want that?

because if you are connected your device to a HD tv it should sent the output in 720p.

connected how?

Re: n900 hd playback

via rca cable? :-D But its failed, its a simple video cable with left and right audio channel. :-\ I thought it has got component output.

I'd want it so I don't have to transcode taking more time & having to manage another set of the same files.

I am going through that very process now. But the limited capacity of the device means it is better anyway to just have a separate set of files with much lower resolution otherwise you would fill up the device in no time (and with files of a much higher resolution than the device can show the benefit of).

N900 has plain NTSC/PAL output at maximum 720x576, so its not exactly FullHD or HD Ready (720p is 1280x720), so N900 has no way to output any higher quality than 800x480 on built-in display.

Re: n900 hd playback

Even if it could due to the screen size you wouldn't be able to take advantage of HD playback except in the case of outputting to an external source.

Re: n900 hd playback

So what is the best way to convert or playback resolution for an external source?

For example, i want to use the tv out on a 1080p or even a 720 lcd tv. Would I be able to save a file on my n900 that is 720p and have it playback full screen on my tv?

if your tv has composite video input, it also scales the image, so no need to do that on the phone.

composite video doesn't show hd, so the result would be the N900 scaling down the video to 480p and the tv scaling it back up. You would not get hd on the tv.

Re: n900 hd playback

Sorry I am new to tv inputs and outputs but how do i get full screen on a 720p or 1080p tv? is that even possible?

I've seen a youtube video of someone showing off on a 46 inch tv somewhere. I was hoping to get the same results

AFAIK you will only get 720p, 1080i and 1080p through the HDMI input on your telly. if you use the composite plug that come with the n900 then you will still get a picture on what ever size telly you have but it will just be in a lower resoloution of 480p which it the standard resolution of most tv broadcasts.

As for the youtube video they could ave plugged it into a 100" screen to show off, it would still be at 480p.

hope this answeres your query

N900 is in theory DLNA capable, all you need is somebody coding an app for that.
There is a way, if you search the internet hard enough, to configure N900 as a media server which is pretty much DLNA but less plug n'play"ish".

In both cases you need a DLNA/WiFi enabled tv or some kind of WiFi gizmo connected to your tv. An easy start for configuring a media server is with your laptop and looking for tutorials on laptop->wireless->TV connections on the web.

I'm 100% positive that N900 can play 720p smoothly. The only trick here, is on how it's encoded. HD video can too be encoded decently, contrary to what most people/companies do.

Re: n900 hd playback

In the case of using DLNA/WIFI then the N900 is not actualyl playing back the video - it is rather just acting as a dort of file server to deliver the mdeia file to the DLNA enabled TV which will in turn decode the video.

It would be impossible for WIFI to handle the bitrate of decoded raw HD video

720p should work, as it has been done before on this hardware, even with a slower wifi module.

Re: n900 hd playback

Sorry probably I did not make myself clear enough. I was referring to the N900 decoding the video and then sending it over wifi to a display. In this case the video being sent is RAW video. It is easy enough to work out the bitrate of RAW 720p video - it is around 92MBytes/s way above any form of wifi in existance today. Of course streaming the encoded 720p signal is a completly different story and would only require a bitrate of a few mbit/s but then that is not the N900 displaying or decoding the video is it? Rather it is the N900 simply serving/streaming a file.

Re: n900 hd playback

i copied a avi-movie-file on the n900 which is 608x256 pixels with a bitrate of 1011 kbit/s

this movie is not playing smoothly.

its watchable, but not nearly as smooth as it normally is (when played on a computer)

but i have to say it looks really really good on the n900-screen, while it being a mediocre looking video file on a computer-screen.

Re: n900 hd playback

It should be able to handle that resolution. Maybe the codec is non-standard or something. A couple of my dvdrip looks awesome and played smoothly.

Re: n900 hd playback

What about using the USB port? Some DVD players now come with USB input so users can rip DVD's, store them on USB flash drives, and watch them on their TV without having to burn the file to a disc.

Couldn't the N900 just send the video through USB into a compatible device? (This assumes you have a USB input on your TV or DVD player, though...)

That would be just using the N900 as a mass media USB storage device. Nothing more.
Yes, it should work for most devices but it's not really something that N900 is doing. :p

Well, yes, I suppose so. So that type of functionality should already be present, then? Is USB supported for something other than a computer?

It's true, you wouldn't be able to view the file ON the N900, but you could still take a reencoded HD movie with you, say to travel or something.
